They imported Kanji from China, but it was really a good fit due to the language structure, so they had to develop Kana, which resulted in Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana used to be it's own alphabet to and be very popular with women back in the days. The problem is that you can't really used just on alphabet, because Japanese is very context-based and has a lot of homonyms (words that sound the same but mean different things or at times totally different things). For this reason, if you use only Kana, you need a lot of context in text to make sense of those words and is basically impossible to know what it mean if all you have is a single word - for example: yuki can mean 'snow' or it can mean 'courage' among other things. Write that word in alone on a paper in Hiragana, and the reader would have to guess the meaning. That's where Kanji shows it's importance because the Kanji for snow and the Kanji for courage is different. Using latin alphabet for Japanese is even more of a mess. So, Japan ended with 3 alphabets. Is not that bad though - once you start learning it, is actually surprisingly functional and practical, and not all that hard to learn. Latin alphabet is easy if you think about the fact that is only 21-25 letters. But combine that with grammar and it takes a lifetime to learn too. I think learning proper English grammar is far more complicated than Japanese and their alphabets, because in the end, English grammar makes no fucking sense, so you just have to memorize everything. I've been fluent in English for 15 years, and I still depend on autocorrect for proper grammar.
