To be honest guys
it's depressing me that I will never get to be a yokozuna or perform a dohyo-iri

all because I was born in America and had never heard of sumo until I was too old to try it

it's like having a stillborn dream
>>
>>217366
The flipside of your dream Is having chronic back pain and dying of a heart attack at 60
>>

Probably still accurate.

Don't worry, manlet jealousy is just a fact of life for men like me, I don't take it personally
>>
>>217366
There are approximately 60 million Japanese men alive today. Only seven of them have worn that rope. The odds would have been against you, even if you were Japanese.
>>
>>217366
Technically you can be a yokozuna if you find one of the regional stone lifting competitions and win it. They use sumo ranks too, including yokozuna.
>>
>>217377
A fun idea. I could definitely do that. I used to compete in the highland games so it's right up my alley.

>>217376
Not to dox myself but I have set a couple strength records. I don't doubt my abilities.

Hell, if the JSA raised the max age to my current age I'd fly to Japan tomorrow.
>>
Asanoyama's comeback, does he win makushita?
>>
>>217415
Is he actually returning for the January basho? If he's been recovering well, it should be a 6-1 minimum, but I imagine some random MsTD schmuck will get a lucky win on him to deny the zensho-yusho.

I dunno about that fellow, but in my youth I was the best foosball player this state has ever seen, I could easily have been yokozuna.
>>
>>217424
Haha, don't sweat it bro. The aspersions of the weak don't bother me, they never have. Frankly, it must be quite sad to have so little self confidence. I feel bad for you guys lol.
>>
>>
>>217425
It isn't normal or confident for a random American to think he could rise to the top of ozumo. It's the arrogance of an inflated ego. It's precisely that arrogance which has prevented you from being as successful as you think you could be. It doesn't matter how much weight you can lift or how loudly you shout that your detractors are just jealous of your power, if you can't muster up the strength to humble yourself then you'll forever look at men like a Yokozuna with envy.
>>
>>217442
You over value sumo their technical skills are so fucking bad they don’t understand what an under hook is on top of their other shit. There’s a reason why mongols dick whipped them for 20 years to the point they made a rule to stop foreigners from taking over their primitive grappling sport.
>>
>>217445
>their technical skills are so fucking bad they don’t understand what an under hook
For sandamne shitters sure, but anyone who makes yokozuna is at least competent at wrestling, including the oshi specialists.
>>

>yeah but the highest rankers knows what they teach grade schoolers
>>
>>217445
>>217448
Stop exaggerating. You can see guys doing underhooks/overhooks at jonokuchi level. It's asinine to think guys who spend their whole lives wrestling can't figure out a concept universal to all grappling arts.
>>

>>
Weaklings mad lol
>>
To be honest I thought you guys would commiserate because we all love sumo, but it seems the general self-opinion here is that you'd never make it, you'd never do anything of worth, you suck, and you're weak. Bros, I think that is just sad. Why be like this? Who would want to hang out with people like this?

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.
>>
>>217467
Nabatame deserves to be demoted. He was the lowest rank in juryo and he had a losing record, so he should be reduced in rank accordingly. Its unfair to sumo fans and the the other rikishi to give him favoritism, he did nothing to earn a juryo rank so he shouldn't have one.
>>
>>217467
You look at top rikishis and think "I could do better than him". That's insulting to anyone who actually loves sumo.
>>
>>217471
That's not insulting at all. It's only insulting if you're a shitey little worm like you.

I love sumo but it’s such a shit grappling sport from a technical standpoint and if you disagree you’ve never put on a gi or been on a grappling mat. How can you dispute the whenever 4 of the top 10 greatest are foreigners and only 1 of the Japanese goats are recent the others are before the 90s.

Unrelated, what are your hopes for sumo in 2025?
>>
>>217589
Having an actual yokozuna for more than one year would be pretty sick. I started following sumo for Aki 2020 and by then Hak+Kak were already one foot in the grave, and we only got about one good year out of Teru before his everything started shitting the bed too
I'd like to see nephew get the rope because I find is retarded shitheel antics enjoyable, but I'd settle for zACK or onosato

Man, remember when Kiri and wktkkg seemed like possible yokozuna candidates? A year ago somehow feels so far away...

You do realise you can just retire from sumo whenever you like, don't you? Nobody is forcing those 30 year old perma-jobbers to hang around with teenagers or do chores. Of course, when they do quit, whether that be at 25 or at 45, they'll have to work awful low-paid jobs and live lonely lives in tiny apartments. They can't and won't suddenly stop being losers. For many men like this, life in a stable, with all its drawbacks, is an infinitely warmer, happier, and more appealing prospect than life on the outside. They've been there since they were 15 - they're completely institutionalised.

But there's only ever so many chanko restaurants waiting for a middle-aged loser to run them at any given time, and if your oyakata has failed not only in turning you into a competent wrestler, but also in introducing you to a proper network of contacts, you're shit out of luck.

>>217881
It might be time for kotoshoho to take a jump in skill but we don’t know the extent of his knee injuries for some reason it seems to bother him every other tournament. Zak had a knee problem but has recovered spectacularly despite being way heavier.
>>
>>217881
Could be Oho. He's still quite young and he's been able to survive in the joi all year, more or less.
>>
>>217895
I want to believe in Oho and the genetics of Taiho, but I don't know. The guy doesn't inspire anything. Yeah it was pretty cool to fight through the broken orbital in the basho before last, but the last one was a total wet fart.
>>
>>217881
Abi will be ozeki
>>
>>217900
>Yeah it was pretty cool to fight through the broken orbital in the basho before last
That was the moment it hit me that he just might actually have what it takes. He was still headbutting dudes afterwards. He didn't used to look like he cared about winning very much.

He's a slow learner, to be sure, but he is improving. Compare footage of him this year to last and he's hitting much harder on the tachi-ai, he's driving people back. Even with his soft body you can visibly see he's started hitting the weights more.
He needs to refine his tactics more and his footwork is getting better, but it's not anything close to Wakamotoharu or Kotozakura's.

>but the last one was a total wet fart.
True but, on the whole, he spent the last five basho in the joi and basically went .500, so he clearly belongs. If he can put the last finishing touches on his sumo, with his durability, he could be a force to be reckoned with for years. Naturally, of course, those last steps to go from "really good" to "great" are the very hardest to achieve, but he's right there.
>>
>>217881
>Kotojobber getting a jump in skill.
No. It's going to be Shishi
>>
>>217904
What you said about "caring about winning" is by far the biggest issue for a lot of otherwise incredibly promising men. I see far too many matches where someone gives up and stops resisting before even touching the tawara, and too many big strong boys that seemingly don't want to hurt their opponents too much, and they lose as a result of that. As somewhat of a gentle giant myself, I understand where they're coming from, but at the same time, they're professional fighters and they're doing themselves and their fans a disservice. I want to see them fighting like they genuinely hate each other.
>>
>>217922
This is actually kind of the modern era, the "sportsmanship era". In like the 1980s the wrestlers weren't routinely giving each other a hand up on the dohyo, checking that the other guy is OK, and so on. They would just shove the fuck out of each other and go to their side to wait for the gyoji's announcement.
>>
>>217881

>>217927
I also think it's more they sometimes don't know when to turn the "sportsmanship mode" off and on. Like it's fine to want to see if the guy is okay once you knock him off the dohyo but if he is still within the in the ring, you should be wanting to fling his ass into the upper part of the stands.

>I see far too many matches where someone gives up and stops resisting before even touching the tawara
In fairness, I think it's also because they want to keep a sense of control if they fall off and don't want to fuck themselves up with a bad tumble.

That's a lot of extra pressure to perform in January

To be honest I have no faith in Zak although I would like it if he succeeded
I just don't think he will
Hosh is going to come out gunning
and you know Onosato is going to be on point, so will Takerufuji
AND the Yokozuna is coming back

Whoever wins January is going to be Yokozuna tier
>>
>>218073
>Whoever wins January is going to be Yokozuna tier
Watch it be another M17 yusho.
>>
>>218073
Takerufuji's girl feet won't last though 15 days of high level competition. He is a career mid tier makuuchi wrestler, on par with someone like Shonannoumi who starts getting MKs when they get single digit ranks
>>
>>218073
Onosato will a non factor he can’t beat a on game nephew or Zak it took them at their lowest the basho before to beat them

Expressing any sign of interest in sumo already makes you one of the most devoted sumo fans outside of Japan. The rest happens organically - this time next year you'll have forgotten what life was like before you became a sumo fan.
>>
>nabatame promoted on a losing record
gay
>>
>>218112
Unless you meant to complain about him not being demoted for a losing record, his rank is still the same, Juryo 14 East.
>>
>>218089
Tsurugisho is the J3w this time
>>
Gonna be interesting to see if Aoishiki can keep on cranking out the KKs now that he is surrounded by a bunch of former makuuchi guys. No more free wins for him from bottom of the division sissies like like Nabatame this time. Nearly everyone he faces is going to outweigh him by at least 20kg and they're nearly all savvy vets.
>>
>>218126
I feel like everytime this is mentioned, he manages to find a solid KK; but I feel like this basho may be the one to actually slow him down.
>>
>>218128
I keep on wonder if or to what extent Aminishiki has taught him the extensive bag of techniques he employed. If Aonishiki's ability is limited to 'stay low, be strong and push' then he might be out of luck this time around, if he starts whipping out some of Aminishiki's old tricks then he might be able to overcome the size and experience differential he is facing.

I care. I think he'll be a fascinating case study of heya influence on rikishi.
If Hakuouhou were to turn back into a wrecking ball the moment he and Hakuhou get out of Isegahamabeya, wouldn't that demonstrate that different approaches to training benefit different rikishi, and evince a need for the possibility of changing heya?

This is why Hakuho is the GOAT.
>Kisenosato mata's to try to disrupt Hakuho
>Hakuho knows the game and pretends to be angry
>Kisenosato mata's again to try and make Hakuho even more angry and throw him off his game
>Hakuho plays along and acts furious
>Kisenosato launches off the tachiai expecting Hakuho to attack him furiously
>Hakuho henka's and laughs
The GOAT won this match before the tachiai. The mental aspect of sumo is something that most don't understand or even take into consideration.

This old lie again? There have always been big, beefy wrestlers alongside smaller, more ripped wrestlers. It's a metagame that constantly shifts, depending on the talent available and the specific rules at the time. Sumo is absolutely dependent on individual performance, so each individual will strive to have the physique and the tactics that will give him the best results. If that means gaining or losing weight, that's what he's going to do. It doesn't matter if he looks ugly or if he wouldn't do well in MMA, the only thing that matters is getting his wins on the dohyo.

Tatsunami has already vastly exceeded Futagoyama's channel. That scene at the end of Tatsunami's video where Hoshoryu rode in on his horse and said "Hey guys I just got back from raiding the neighboring village, I captured this Bactrian camel" and then sliced off one of the camel's humps and started eating it will never be topped by Futagoyama. Roga's "one time my mom served me wolf instead of the usual hot pockets" story is the best Futagoyama will ever do and Tatsunami already one upped it on their first video.

It's all well and good to predict that the current leaders of the pack will make it to Yokozuna - all they have to do is continue to be better than everyone else and at least one of them is guaranteed to make it. But if we have three Yokozuna next December, who takes their places in san'yaku? The joi is a revolving door for jobbers at the moment, and the low end of the division is all over the place.

Lower sanyaku is always all over the place. It's rare that someone stays there for extended periods of time without either being good enough to make ozeki or slipping up and going back to maegashira after a single losing score. Guys like Mitakeumi are outliers.

It's called tobitsuki, "launching in" or "flying in". I've only seen footage of it once before. They practiced it in maezumo in the interest of saving time in identifying who was and wasn't good at sumo, if I recall correctly. It originally stopped around the end of WWII, but was temporarily revived from 1956-1973.

I'd never been clear on what the preservation status of old sumo recordings was, but this footage being from the standard broadcast angle implies that the NSK still has video for every match in every division as far back as the 60s, which I hope is correct. I would love to see 1950s jonokuchi matches.
>>
>>219019
Gonna spitball that it was brought back due to rising numbers of entrants, so maezumo would take longer without tobitsuki, and that it was dropped again as economic growth put more emphasis on secondary education, resulting in the current trend of maezumo being highest in March and negating the need for tobitsuki in the rest of the year.

Lets say Onosato continues his pattern of alternating Tokyo yushos with 9-6s at the regional bashoes, how many years would he have to keep up that pattern of winning 3 a year but never two consecutive before he would get promoted to yokozuna?
>>
>>219027
They wouldn't do it for someone like Kaio, they certainly wouldn't do it for Onosato unless we still remain without an active yokozuna that isn't Terunofuji,
>>

>unless we still remain without an active yokozuna that isn't Terunofuji
Teru's been part-time for 3 years now. Can we stop pretending like the JSA will overpromote someone like it's a certainty when it hasn't happened in all this time?
>>
>>219027
If he never does better than 14-1 -> 9-6 -> 14-1 -> 9-6, they would probably never promote him. He would 'only' be the best ozeki of all time.
>>
>>219027
It took Takanohana 7 yushos before he finally got yokozuna, because they absolutely waited until he got 2 in a row. There was a period of a year where he alternated yushos and 11-4s.

Heya youtubes power ranking
1. Isegahama, best content hands down
2. Kise, stalwart channel with some of the best variety of content
3. Tatsunami, quality deluxe
4. Tamanoi, very entertaining selection of athletic competition, but subs are trash
5. Minato, poor subs, but compensated for somewhat with the excellent presentation, overseas voyages and enthusiasm of the participants
6. Shikoroyama, would be ranked higher if the posts weren't so infrequent, but excellent quality when they do deliver
7. Hidenoyama, new and subs are poor, but otherwise shows promise
8. Futagoyama, can't believe youtube allows these slobs to be put on public display, yuck
>>
The stars have aligned for the upcoming basho and it looks like we're in for a potentially legendary show, there are a number of enthralling story lines at the top of the banzuke, not only the two ozekis chasing the horizontal rope, but a yokozuna looking to shut them down and prove he still controls the top of the mountain and another ozeki who is looking to get a run of his own started.
What make it even more engaging is that opposing them in the early matches is a lineup of komusubis and upper joi that is absolutely stacked with guys who have a strong shot at knocking off anyone in upper sanyaku, Tobizaru is really the only weak link above M3. Gonoyama is kinda predictable, but he makes up for it by being such a wrecking ball. The rest of them; Abi, Wakatakakage, Takanosho, Kirishima (if he is in the form he showed in September), Atamifuji & Oho - are all bound to add to the excitement by showing us upset victories probably every night of the first week. If Kirishitma's neck/spine isn't in shape for full power sumo yet then he will get obliterated, but even without him the week 1 competition for upper sanyaku is stronger that usual. Shodai might beat some high rankers too, he is still capable of it once in a while.

Nobody has put together results that would even begin a discussion for promotion in the past 3 years, so your point is moot. If they had, I'm certain that Terunofuji would have retired there and then.

However, for argument's sake let's say that Terunofuji pulls out early in Hatsu, neither Hōshōryū nor Kotonowaka put up promotion-worthy numbers, and Ōnosato wins convincingly. That situation might just be palatable enough for the JSA to allow Terunofuji to retire, with the drawing card for 2025 being who will gain promotion out of the three ōzeki (where at least one inevitably succeeds).

The brass just aren't going to allow for a lengthy period without a yokozuna on the banzuke, without a credible replacement waiting in the wings - of whom we currently have three.

Unless Terunofuji somehow pulls some magic bullshit out of his arse and regains his 2020-2021 form, this is the best time for him to bow out and let the next generation take over. He's got his 10 yūshō after all.
>>
>>219130
Unless I misunderstood, he said in >>218750 that he wants 4 more.
>>
>>219130
Protip: Teru isn't on the verge of considering retirement. He isn't all that old, as long as he can continue to collect 1 or 2 cups a year he will stick around.
>>
>>219134
Teru is already 7th all time for most absences by a yokozuna, and is one more skipped basho away from tying Akebono for 6th. Everyone is being lenient with him now because he's the only yokozuna and has kept his nose clean outside the ring, but the moment it looks like there's at least one new yokozuna that's here to stay for a while, pressure will mount for Teru to preserve the dignity of the rank.

Futagoyama's ratings have been falling so they fired their cameraman in hired a 'retired' (aka post-wall) JAV actress to take over in hopes of adding some sex appeal on the cheap to recover their lost ratings and ad revenue.
Future Futagoyama plotlines: female idol group moves in next door, their plumbing breaks and they come to Futagoyama to ask if they can use Futagoyama's bath, then Kikuchi rapes them all (he is still a minor so he knows he can't be charged with any crimes)

Except on fucking weekends and like 24 hours later. Basically just, "they're up when they're up." If I want to avoid spoilers, I can't even read the basho threads on /sp/.

How do those cheap fucks not realize the whole reason the tour in London will work at all is because of people stealing their content?

it 100% will help him get the rope if he wins this basho and they are really considering a promotion.. remember that he isn't coming off of a win. he needs anything extra like that to convince them 13-2jy was a yusho equivalent and he is a cut above the others. it could also be the difference between kotozakura not getting a promotion if he goes 13-2 losing only to onosato and hoshoryu.
