WE ARE SO BACK

Hoshoryu losing the yusho after that disgraceful henka is perfectly fine for me.
A shame Waka lost his ozeki chance but he'll get another nex tyear i bet.
Aonishiki is cruising for the most consistent ozeki of all time.

Kotoshoho was disgraceful. Yusho hangover whatever sure but not fucking 12 losses

All around great basho. Glad both Yokozuna had a strong showing. Although some of Hoshoryu's wins were a little disappointing. However, I am a henka hater, so I have strong feelings there. Wakatakakage and Kirishima... Whatever happened there? I wonder if they will save one of them from falling too far, or if they will give Komusubi to Hakuoho. He's earned it.

He was 4-4 after day 8 and that was all of the sanyaku. In week 2, he won all the matches he was expected to. He was pretty commanding against the rest of the joi. Nothing seemed particularly fluky.

His progress is always frustratingly slow, but there’s always progress.

Onosato is what Takakeisho would've been had he been 8 inches taller.
I'm not saying this as a pejorative by the way, the two are similar in the sense of having a relatively limited fighting style yet being fantastic enough at that fighting style for one to be yokozuna and the other to be one win away from yokozuna.
>>
>>243499
Takanoshō would have looked so cool with the tsuna

he would've look retarded because he would've missed or kyujo'd more bashos than he finished and half those finishes would've been 9-6 or worse. he was barely adequate as ozeki

Not much was working all that great, he wasn't dominating his matches like Onosato did, a lot of his wins were close calls. Tamawashi almost got him, so did Kotoshoho & Hiradoumi, Hosh was lucky to get to 11-0, but the two victories he picked up after that were both decisive.

Meanwhile, Hosh himself has negative records against:
Atamifuji
Chiyoshoma (!!!)
Ichiyamamoto
Oho
Takayasu (and it's not even close!),
among other rikishi who's unlikely to match against him ever again.
Shitton of almost-equal records with rikishi way below his rank.

With such performance, I doubt he'll exceed Kakuryu's cup number.

Just ganbarize, do your shiko, eat well, and focus on your own style of waiting for the next basho.
>>
>>243688
>I can't wait a month and a half.
I understand. I recommend picking up a book on it. "The Way of Salt" by Ash Warren has a bit of personal touch and tries to explain customs to westerners in an easy to understand way. It's not comprehensive and it's full of his personal opinions. That said, it has a lot of good information. Another I recommend is "The Perfect Guide To Sumo" in japanese and english by Katsuharu Ito, translated by David Shapiro. It's very direct and informational and covers things I haven't found in a lot of other places, especially historic connections and differences. I would recommend 'the perfect guide' first, way of salt if you're still hungry after.
>>
>>243688
We do our best to take it one day at a time and not focus on the basho.

No, nothing else of substance goes on between basho, which is why we spiral further into schizodom between each tournament.

I wish I had discovered sumo at his age, I'm not too old but any of these sumo wrestlers would twist me into a pretzel.
I'm not very familiar with how the ranking system works but if he's this good at 21 years old, he's gotta be on the road to be a Yokozuna by his mid 20's like Onosato right?
>>
>>243697
The point where your "road to rank X" stops being about you is Ozeki. You can get all the way up there on nothing but 11-4s, as a certain man is likely to demonstrate. But that last step is entirely dependent on whether or not you can be better than everyone else, twice in a row.
>>
>>243697
>I'm not very familiar with how the ranking system works
Sumo is divided into six divisions. The top two, makuuchi and juryo, are the only ones where wrestlers get a regular salary. "Maegashira" is any rank-and-file member of the top division. The guys at the very top are collectively called "sanyaku." Komusubi is the lowest sanyaku rank and easiest to get; if you get winning scores every tournament then you'll eventually make komusubi, even if it's only 8-7. It doesn't matter how many komusubi there are, someone at M1e who finishes 8-7 will get an extra komusubi spot. Sekiwake is when it starts getting a bit harder: there's a minimum of two spots so if someone drops out then someone lower will get promoted to take their place, but if there's already two or more sekiwake then a komusubi needs 11+ wins to force an extra sekiwake spot.

Ozeki is the most complicated. Someone needs to already be sekiwake and a record of "high success" over the past three tournaments. 33 wins over three tournaments is a typical rule of thumb, but it also depends on the quality of their competition, quality of their sumo, and whether or not the rankings committee likes them. Once you're ozeki, you need to win the title twice in a row to make yokozuna, or have one win and one "equivalent" runner-up. What's considered "equivalent" is likewise vague, but regardless it means you need to be at minimum the second-best guy in the tournament with a strong record.
>>
>>243701
And the worst part: very few of these rules are written down and/or consistently applied so everyone is constantly guessing.

Your explanation makes a lot of sense, until we get to this gray area you're talking about. Do the big wigs behind sumo take advantage of this to promote sumo wrestlers they want to "push"?

yusho winners have to spend the period between their victory and the next basho getting drunk with their supporters clubs so the 2nd victory is more challenging
>>
>>243709
>Twice in a row doesn't sound that hard to be honest
In a combat sport, it’s a lot. Otherwise there would be a lot more yokozunas.
For nearly all of these guys, they are beaten to a pulp by the end of a tournament and they are able to ease off the gas a little for the next one. If you’re going for Yokozuna, you have to dive right back in at the highest degree.
Moreover, since you’re an ozeki, your 15 matches will literally be the hardest possible schedule. You don’t get to Smurf against the lower maegashitters.
>>
>>243709
>Do the big wigs behind sumo take advantage of this to promote sumo wrestlers they want to "push"?
Sort of. They tend to be more lenient to the senior, well-established guys over the new up-and-comers.
Conspiracy theorists will claim that some wrestlers are held down unfairly due to collusion by the elders, but it usually just comes down to seniority like everything else is in Japan.

We need a real bingo for next time. Bingo isn't supposed to be a list of rare shit; someone is supposed to actually win with the fun being the randomness of who gets it first. They have to be more achievable than a triple matta, wheelchair, or mizu-iri. It's also more fun if different people have things others don't.

I'm gonna be slowly compiling a big ass list of things I think of and hope you'll play along with me for the next basho :3c
>>
>>243812
Things that happen regularly:
Oho beats a yokozuna/ozeki, loses to an M10+ in the same basho
>>
>>243813
That feels too wordy and a specific rikishi getting a kinboshi seems a bit far since in total we had 1 kinboshi last basho. It wouldn't be the worst thing if it extended beyond Makuuchi too. Some things I like so far are

>Kinboshi (Onosato)
>Kinboshi (Hoshoryu)
>WTK > WMH
>WTK < WMH
>Koga Makekoshi
>Asanoyama Promotion

If you want something semi-regular for Oho I could add one for his forehead scar re-opening. Maybe change the blood one for blood (nose) then add blood (Oho).
>>
>>243814
Problem with the middle two is that you have to wait for the basho to be pretty much over to determine them. The bottom two are just way too specific.
>>
>>243815
Specific is fine if it's something with a good chance of happening imo. I just don't consider an Oho kinboshi likely enough to warrant a spot. I'd say it needs an over 50% chance of happening at LEAST, and preferably way higher. Remember, in normal bingo every number WILL come out eventually. Like how Asakoryu has been so henka happy lately that it's probably a safe bet I can put henka (Asakoryu) on there. Also since I intend for there to be more options for boxes than 24 you can keep generating bingo boards until you get one you like.
>>
>>243816
if you can do a generator, arrange them into rarity tier lists so everyone ends up with X number of freebies, Y number of near impossibles etc
>>
>>243816
You just contradicted yourself though. In normal bingo, the numbers don't have a greater than 50% chance of coming out in one game.
>>
I suppose it's best to avoid things that can only be confirmed at the very end of the basho and replace them with things from maybe 2/3 of the way through, like the Yokozuna and Dan getting their 8th win. I also like the idea of putting in attempts at rare kimarite as opposed to winning via them. Last time the bingo had tsuridashi but afaik despite a couple of attempts no one pulled it off. We could say the same about uchimuso too since I believe Dan only did it to Atamin and that match ended in a torinaoshi.

>Dan's 8th Win
>Onosato's 8th Win
>Hoshoryu's 8th Win
>Tsuridashi Attempt
>Uchimuso Attempt
>Abi Flowchart Win

>>243818
Only because the game ends.

>>243817
If you have a generator that can do rarities sure, but people can still generate a bunch and just take the best one. I'd also have to post the full list in order to get opinions about rarity, which could detract from the fun of seeing boxes for the first time and taking your first generate.
>>
>>243819
>Only because the game ends.
Yeah no shit. That's how bingo works. It's not supposed to be everybody wins.

>like the Yokozuna and Dan getting their 8th win
This is a good idea. Yokozuna KK on day 8 is good.
>>
>>243820
>It's not supposed to be everybody wins
Yeah but I can't stop people from ticking off boxes after the first poster gets a line. Ideally the first poster would get it day 10 or thereabouts. I wonder if the days that regular guest commentators appear is sufficiently random to add something like commentator (Aoiyama).

He wouldn't have suffered so badly if he had behaved in a trustworthy manner.
Kisenosato does not engage in similar underhanded behavior and alerted the bosses as to what was going on as soon as he found out about it himself.
Foreigners who screech "muh racism" every time they're not allowed to flaunt authority is one of the best arguments for keeping foreigners out of sumo altogether.

Now that I think about it, a loss to Juryo isn't a gimme since we don't have a guaranteed injury so might not even get Juryo guys fighting up in the first place, and M1 makekoshi is sort of lame since it could come so late in the basho.

>Fujinokawa lifts someone
Yeah I can see that, added.
>Gonoyama gets -nage'd
Added.
>Roga MK
Roga is such an odd case. Before September he's had four 7-8s in Makuuchi, and only been demoted once off them. Going off Spiffy's instant banzuke video he's going to survive demotion on 7-8 AGAIN. I wouldn't say he's guaranteed a makekoshi, but "Roga Isn't Demoted" is something I'd put on the list if I wanted it to run that long. Sadly KK/MK just takes too long to confirm desu. Ideally this stuff will happen day 10 at latest.
>Tamawashi beats a sanyaku
Likely landing at Hiradoumi's current spot, where he started facing Sanyaku day 6. This works.
>Abi wins by henka 2+ times
Nope. He didn't henka once last month so the odds of him winning twice are basically zero. I already have him getting a single flowchart win on there anyway.
>Oho beats a 'zuna
Too slim imo. Him losing to both would be a decent addition, but it took until way too late in the basho for S1w to face both Zunas last time.
>Dan wins by a sub 1% rarity kimarite
I already have uchimuso attempt on there. I'll replace it with this.

Takerufuji going down would've ended it if Nishikifuji had failed at promotion, but even with him making it, the next guy down the banzuke who isn't injured from Aomori is Tatsunami's memelord Okaryu who went 5-2 at Ms18w in September. Roughly half of ozeki make yokozuna, therefore not making yokozuna by definition makes him a below average ozeki.

Do they actually? For some reason it feels like they rotate out way more often than that
>>
>>244328
The exact amount is more like 45% so there's a wiggle room of like 7 ozeki who could be considered above average without making yokozuna. But that's limited to guys like Kaio and Konishiki.

Maybe not a throw, but he deserves some credit. That's a bonafide takedown, not just oonga booga smash like you usually see from him.
>>
>>244348
To me it looked more like Hoshoryu just lost his left grip on Sato's belt at the very last second, you can see his arm ping upwards right at the critical moment in the throw. Whether it was him losing his grip or Onosato pushing so hard against his arm he simply couldn't hold it without wrenching his fingers off we may never know, but it is worth noting that apparently Hosh dislocated a finger in their first.

In his right hand, yes.

Look, his defense was good, he was ready for the throw and even tried to mess with the leg, but I can't pretend he was in control of that match at any point. Hoshoryu went for it and forced that situation, thought it could work, it didn't. That's it.

Sure, but that's what you'd expect anyone to do in that situation. Even more so someone like Onosato who loves his right-hand grip. I don't think Hoshoryu's match plan was "I'm just going to circle around him and grab his back while he does nothing".

Meh, he kept the rank for a year and got a yusho, but I think he would be considered below average as an Ozeki. Had a better run than Mitakeumi for sure, though.
>>
>>244385
>since switching to the current basho schedule
That actually hurts everyone from 1958 onward since they have more basho to win.
>>
>>244361
Yokozuna being allowed to sit out and nurse their injuries instead of exacerbating them and dropping down the banzuke anyway is a huge deal. Teru would never have hit 10 yusho if he had to fight every basho because his injuries would've ended his career much sooner. Even if we Ozeki him and say he has to fight every other basho, his injuries still would've retired him before 10.

A Kirishitma who roped and could sit out without losing rank would probably be on 4-5 yusho right now.
>>
>>244379
Their outside hands are nowhere near synced.
>>
>>244393
How many yusho a yokozuna gets as a yokozuna is irrelevant when comparing how many yusho are won by ozeki.
>>
>>244385
>Miyabiyama 0
lmaoooo
>>
>>244395
It's more that Kirishitma just goes on the list of Ozeki who were cut down by injuries before earning the rope that would've negated their injuries and let them win way more yusho (see: Takakeisho). Contrast this with Ozeki who just never had it in them to go anywhere in the first place.

Also what the fuck there was an Ozeki called Ouchiyama; sounds like he was constantly injured.
>>
>>244400
If a rikishi is cut down by injuries then it just means they're failing at one of the core pillars of sumo, which is strength of the body. Part of being a rikishi of such high status is the responsibility to build up and train ones body to achieve success in a manner that does not lead to injury. This is why Kirishima was a below average ozeki.
The same criticism can be applied to Takakeisho but the difference is he was at least able to win 3 yusho as an ozeki (4 total) before his body failed.
>>
>>244401
I like to think that there are Ozeki with rope potential, and Ozeki without it. Maybe it's a hindsight thing, but Zak's January performance slapped him on the list of guys who just don't have it.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1W1kK6ww_E

Get some sumo history in you.
>>
>>244402
I hate talking about things like potential because they're used to fluff up guys who don't deserve it. If an ozeki has yokozuna potential then they'll make yokozuna. If they don't then they didn't have it. All the "potential" in the world didn't help Kisenosato for three years until he finally got it.
>>
>>244409
An Ozeki making the rank without a yusho is probably a good indicator. Both Hoshoryu and Onosato made it with a yusho while Zak didn't. Fuck, Onosato is the only rikishi to have two yusho in his Ozeki run afaik. Christ, Onosato is set up to spread Ozumo's asscheeks wide for years.
>>
>>244411
>An Ozeki making the rank without a yusho
Literally every yokozuna from Musashimaru to Kisenosato failed to yusho prior to making ozeki. Including Hakuho and Asashoryu.
>>
>>244412
Wtf our current yokozuna are better than Hakuho???
>>
>>244401
At the end of the day, who got it, got it and that's it. That said, not all injuries are preventable nor recoverable, especially depending on a rikishi's build. It's just dense to consider every injury a personal failure of the wrestler. Sometimes bad luck ruins everything.

As you know, promotion standards in ozumo aren't exactly consistent, so you will find plenty of underwhleming yokozuna and the occasional ozeki who shoots above his rank. That's a large part od why people come up with these "what could've been" scenarios every now and then. They'd rather believe their favorite got shit luck rather than that he just didn't have it in him and it's rarely obvious which of the two is true.
>>
If Kotozakura went 13-2JY 12-3Y in his next basho do you think the YDC would rope him?
>>
>>244418
No because he can't get 10 wins consistantly, going 8-7 for half a year is not a Yokozuna performance, I don't think JSA wants another Terunofuji unless there are no other options. Onosato being as dominant as he is raises the standard for everyone else
>>
>>244421
Even though it meets the standard that Hoshoryu met?

>>244421

Not reading your weeb shit. Hoshoryu is living up to expectation; he's just being overshadowed by a fatso who fell from the heavens as a Yokozuna and left a fucking crater when he landed.
>>
>>244418
Would depend entirely on whether they said the 13-2 J was yusho-equivalent ahead of the next basho like they did Hoshoryu. Remember that basho was two 13-1 ozeki going up against each other on the final day with no yokozuna, so they were the top dogs at the time. It would probably need to be something similar where one of the yokozuna is out and the other is facing Zak with both at 13-1 on the final day.
>>
>>244392
only if you manage to stay healthy and only slightly injured at worse.
>>
>>244429
Ganbarize!
>>
>>244409
i would only agree if there was a hard 2 yusho rule. the yusho equivalent rule has allowed people to be promoted prematurely like hoshoryu when it wouldn't have been strong enough just a few years ago with terunofuji there.
though, there's way more over promotions than guys who were fucked

Making sekiwake twice before their first komusubi basho happened with 7 wrestlers, including Takanosho (pic related). The record is Tochiakagi doing it 3 times in 1979 and 1980 before making komusubi in 1981.
Making sekiwake twice without ever making komusubi in their career happened with 3 wrestlers. The record is also 3 set by Chiyonoyama back in 1947, 1948, and 1949. He's also the most recent, so this seems to be something less likely ever since they went to the 6 basho, 15 days schedule. Oho would count as the most recent since Chiyonoyama, but that would be dependant on him never making komusubi at all before he retires.
