Who’s taking up sadogatake’s foreigner spot?
>>
>>247083
Did he leave?
>>
>>247084
Doesn’t look like it I just really want that Bukhchuluun kid, does Kotokenryu have a notable background?
>>
>>247085
Not really. He wrestled for Saitama Sakae High School, but dropped out to go pro. Also his last name is Terunofuji's first name... for what it's worth.
>>
>>247086
>Also his last name is Terunofuji's first name... for what it's worth.
Mongolians go by patrynomics or more rarely clan names, so this isn't uncommon. They also have Asian name order, so the given name is second.
>>
>>247088
Interesting. Terunofuji's name is backwards on Sumodb then.
>>
>>247086
Why doesn’t sadogatake have recruiting power like other stables? Seems like a good place to send some athletes given how many ozekis they’ve produced.
>>
>>247090
Their stable is a bit out of the way, maybe? Or they just LIKE being hit with golf clubs?
>>
>>247089
Mongolian names are weird because they have Asian name order, but patrynoms instead of a surnames, and a person will mostly be referred to by their given name. So for example if you were a Mongolian in Mongolia and happened to run into Kotokenryu, you'd refer to him as Mr. Bilguun, not Mr. Gantulga, and the patrynom would only be used in addition if you needed to distinguish him from someone else whose name was also Bilguun. So chances are someone on sumodb or whoever they sourced it from heard Terunofuji referred to as just "Gan-erdene" and never corrected it later.
>>
>>247090
>>247091
They're not even located in Tokyo, not as far out as Kisenosato's stable, but they are over in Chiba prefecture. Additionally they've only had three tsukidashi in their entire history from what I've seen, with the most recent being Kotomitsuki who debuted in 1999, so it might be a personal preference through the stable's history to primarily recruit kids out of high school who start from scratch. They have an above average number of guys on the banzuke and 6 elders, so it's not like they're Tamawashi's stable where it's just three guys.
>>
>>247092
I refuse to call mongolians anything besides their shikona

I refuse to call Mongolians because I can't afford the long distance.

a guy who wins as many as he has as quickly as he has is a dai, the double digit figure is just an inevitable outcome
>>
>>247100
We'll see.
>>
>>247101
Dai isn't about career totals, its about being dominant. If Hakuho has only managed 10 wins in he lengthy career nobody would consider him dai.
Teru's claim to dai has more to do with that stretch in 2020-21 where he managed 5 wins & 3 JYs in a year and a half than it does with his total of 10 Ys.
Similarly Onosato put up 5 Ys & 2 JYs in a 9 basho stretch, he is dai, he has been head and shoulders above all other competitors for the past 18 months, only difference between him and Teru is Teru's claim is weak because his period of domination was short while Onosato looks like he could last for many more years being the favorite to win in every basho.
It'll only be about another year before people will start to complain about him winning all the time making the sport boring.

Pretty sure they're set in stone the moment the banzuke comes out but I can't remember how it's done. Something about the highest ranked guy fights the lowest Sanyaku, then it's worked out downwards. You could probably look at the day one matches from September, see what ranks fought what, and copy paste it to this basho since the Sanyaku is the same size.
>>
How many wins do you think Dan will get this time around?
11 or a different number?
This is Dan's 3rd basho in the upper section of the banzuke so the guys he is competing with must be starting to get familiar with his game and him with theirs, will that make a difference or are we looking at 11 again?
>>
>>247233
11 but one of them will be against Zak and one of the yokozuna (the other will pull out by week 2) so there will fierce arguments over whether he deserves ozeki
>>
>>247234
>Losing to 4 shitters
>Ozeki
Nah. What's dumb is that an 11-4 would put him at 33 wins. Meanwhile Onosato got Ozeki on 34 but because of how things fell he had two yusho in that. Dan could realistically get to 35 wins with a 13-2 and still not get a single yusho.
>>
Chris seems to be putting together pre-made, almost completed obituaries for guys who are nearing the end of their careers, ones that can be quickly updated and published as soon as the retirement announcement comes along, first Tamawashi and now Takayasu, I guess we'll be seeing Ryuden soon too, along with Shodai, Mitakeumi, Kagayaki, Sadnoumi…

Dan comes back substantially larger and stronger every basho, so anyone who considers themselves "familiar with his game" is in for a surprise.
Remember Dan's first contest with Zak, Dan trying and failing to shove the big guy's enormous bulk out of the ring, but the next time Dan faced off with Zak, Dan was capable of handling all that mass.
So Dan should be able to beat Onosato this time around, their last contest was pretty much just a slipitoshi loss, not really an overwhelming victory by Onosato, I see Dan beating him this time,

According to Spiffy, the odds of an Ozeki promotion seem to spike if your best basho of your run is the last one, so a 12-3 would make a promotion very likely. 11-4 isn't happening though.
>>
>>247266
>Zak's winrate this year is 50.6%

>>
>>247267
he will get promoted on 11-4, that was already announced after the september basho
>>
>>247269

>>
>>247268
>onosato won 3 of the last 4 bashos
>odds only slightly higher than a guy who has won none of the past 4 and is averaging less than 8 wins over that span
there are definitely a lot of questionable calls within the initial odds, normally the gamblers end up correcting that and the odd shift on early wagering, but i doubt sumo gets enough bets placed for that to happen much in a western sports book
>>
>>247271
Bookies need bets to cover the winners and make money.

The question they ask is: what odds are going to get someone to make this bet?
That's what they're trying to get. Not the most scientifically accurate odds.
>>
>>247271
I like how you excluded Hoshoryu's yokozuna run to make him look as bad as possible. In reality you Onosato has won 3 of the last 6 while Hoshoryu has won 1 and got a yusho equivalent in another. And to be quite desu with you Hoshoryu's performance last basho would've been considered a yusho equivalent for a yokozuna run too. That's 3 "yusho" for Hosh in the last 6 basho.

Also if we exclude Hoshoryu's injury bashos as yokozuna he's averaged 12.5 wins per basho while Onosato has averaged 12. Hoshoryu IS only marginally behind Onosato to win the yusho. Don't forget that September went to a playoff which went to a monoii (see: based Kakuryu).

Some open training video from a couple hours ago.
Im fairly new to this. Is there a name for the practice exercise they do after the practice bouts?
A rikishi pushes another a few times across the dohyo and then the pushed rikishi switches places and "beats" the one that was resisting who falls and does a small flip on the ground
It seemed more perfromative (even the pushing) than real training.

With butsukari-geiko, the man being pushed decides how hard he's going to resist you. Shoving a 300 or 400 pound man across the ring is hard enough if he's a ragdoll, it's a lot like the charging practice American footballers do. However, if the man knows your strengths and weaknesses intimately and knows exactly how to make you struggle more, it can become extremely difficult. It also functions like a drop set in weightlifting, as you get more and more exhausted he can reduce the resistance so it never becomes impossible, but always stays at the edge of what you can endure. You also have to do it at the end of your grueling training session, first thing in the morning before you've had anything to eat. It's not just the hardest thing they do, it's possibly the hardest form of routine training done in any sport.

Kirishima is looking really solid, I would bet on him doing his now normal yoyoing of shit basho into good one. I think he's getting 10 wins minimum. If Zak ends up kabob& then that increased Dan's promotion chances substantially, the bosses don't like empty slots at the upper end of the banzuke, they think they sell more tickets, merch, etc. if they have more guys at the top ranks
>>

How many times must we tell you to stop perpetuating this myth? We have three ozeki currently, and we only need two to make a banzuke.

>>

I don't even believe that myth about people caring if ozekis are on the banzuke or not. Ozekis are only especially interesting if they're at risk of demotion or if they won the previous basho, nobody is on the edge of their seat wondering if the ozeki will clear 10 wins
But the pro journalists repeat the empty slot stuff all the time so it seems like its a thing. And the JSA definitely gives out promotions on weak and not-quite qualifying scores when they have empty slots to fill, we all just saw it happen with Hosh, so you should expect to see Dan promoted on any double digit score, especially if Zak ends up with less than 8 wins
>>
>>247376
>But the pro journalists repeat the empty slot stuff all the time
Just because journalists are stupid doesn't mean you have to be either.
>>
>>247378
They were right when they said Hosh was up for promotion due to the empty yokozuna slot even though his previous basho was only a JY, that was the last time they made the claim and they were correct so its safe to presume they know what they're saying now

Dan keeps on getting bulkier and bulkier, but he doesn't grow tiddies so you know that his added weight is all muscle. Eventually he is going to get strong enough to overpower Onosato, its only a matter of time.
>>
>>247379
Hosh and Zak were both up for yokozuna at the same time. Had they both gotten it and Teru not retired, we would've had 3 yokozuna, meaning there still would've been an odd number. Neither were up for yokozuna solely because of an "empty yokozuna slot" because that is not a concept that actually exists.

The exact rank is rarely important when it's the person at the bottom of the banzuke, and mostly comes up when they do stuff like Shishi where he got a 7-8 so they technically lowered him a rank on paper without demoting him to juryo because nobody else from juryo deserved the promotion.

No he won't lmao. Not only would the JSA never do that but lately they've shown a willingness to give rikishi with terrible scores a softer landing. Daieisho only landed at M10 with his 0-0-15 from S1e, and Gonoyama only went -10 on his 1-14. A kyujo M18e would probably land at J10.

someone on the nhk show mentioned takakeisho's skills as a coach showing through in takanosho's performance so I looked up the records of the rest of the stable and it seems like takakeisho might really have strong skills in that area, nearly all the lower rankers put up 6-1s or 5-2 except the guy who kyujo'd and the jonidan guy who lost to koga. 5 out of 5 KKs in makushita and higher.
Tokiwayama moved up a bunch in the stable power ranking too

Not everyone here has negative feelings and reactions towards everyone and everything around them. But /sp/ especially has the stigma of you must absolutely fucking shit on everything and everyone possible. Anything posted in a positive light has to be derided for the lulz, because appreciating something on a deeper level and trying to understand how they got there is cringe.
When I was new to sumo I greatly disliked Takakeisho, for how he looked, moved, and "simple" style. I grew an appreciation for his sumo over time. The timing, pinpoint thrusts and overall movement were sublime the few times he was healthy. His ability to stand people up and knock them back was wild. There is a reason Daieisho and Takanosho both respect the man. With similar styles, and arguably better bodies for sumo, they have been beaten by the hamster.
Anyways, If I was going to simp for anyone it would be Kiribayama.

Best year of sumo since 2021. Next year will be exciting with the likes of Goshima, Kazuma, and Asahifuji making it into makuuchi, while a lot of old veterans fall off the banzuke.

I predict no Yokozuna or Ozeki promotions in 2026. Onosato will dominate, some of the newcomers will win one cup, and Hoshoryu will not win his first basho as a Yokozuna.

Hosh will hopefully be using the upcoming tour to get some more ring time with Aoni.
He has to figure something out in the pre-belt part of the grapple, because he is getting beat in one of the places that he is usually the best at.
I don't think we will be seeing the Asashoryu style of showing up at the stable of wrestlers who he lost to in the last basho, and beating the shit out of them to form a game plan for next basho and intimidate.
Terunofuji definitely employed the tours to call out his weak matchups to learn, and with Onosato out this is the perfect time to leverage that privilege.

Dropping important matches in the first couple days and then throwing dudes is pretty classic Hoshoryu though, and it was good to see him still able to employ his style on almost everyone except Aoni.
Actually same with Kirishima, his scrap to get to the front of the mawashi and force out style looks like it's coming back nicely.
>>
>>248453
>one of the places that he is usually the best at…
…against japs who don't have a western wrestling background. And Hosh's lanky physique gives away a lot of advantage against Dan's higher density and lower CG. Hosh needs to get himself into the kind of shape uncle was in, his workout routine is weak. We've all seen him in the Tastunami training videos standing around doing little to nothing in morning practice, just wasting time. Sure he goes to a trainer later in the day, but that doesn't give him an excuse to waste morning practice.
>>
>>248454
Would you like to discuss this or push your theories and meme?
Honestly the worst part about the current slop era is it gives poster like you something to point at when it fits their chosen narrative.

Horseryu finally broke his silence spoke briefly to the press

https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2025/11/24/articles/20251123s00005000418000c.html

Horseryu spoke to the media after his loss in the Kyushu basho makuuchi playoff. Including the day before, this was his fourth consecutive loss to Aonishiki, and he was unable to shake off the feeling that Aonishiki was superior to him.

Since being promoted to yokozuna, Horseryu has yet to win a tournament. He initially declined interview requests in the dressing room, but on the way home he let slip his true feelings, saying, "Next tournament, I'll get my revenge. Its vexing. I don't want it to say more than this."

Due to Onosato's forfeit, Horseryu was put in the advantageous position of conserving his stamina for the playoff match, but the long preparation period proved to be a disadvantage, as he said, "My body cooled down."

>>
>>248494
Being able to beat 'Sato will make things much easier on him, but it's not an explicit requirement. It is the random odd loss or now even getting henka'd that will stand in the way of things.
Naturally there's also avoiding career altering injuries but those go without saying, and besides diving a few times he's stayed clear of those pretty well.

Kisenosato published an article deeply criticizing HorseSHITryu's approach, including his tachiai and weak training routine:

https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2025/11/25/articles/20251125s00005000032000c.html

The final tournament of the year saw Aonishiki's stability stand out. He will surely get stronger, and if he can increase his weight, the range and enjoyment of his sumo will expand. Meanwhile, the issues facing both the East and West Yokozuna for the future were brought to light.

Hoshoryu suffered consecutive losses to Aonishiki in the final bout and the playoff. In both matches, he showed no strong points, even suggesting a gap in power. Despite desperately thrusting, his opponent slipped underneath and countered him. He was attacked almost like a "Tsume Shogi" (checkmate) puzzle with no attacking moves left. Nothing came out of him. His tachi-ai style, which involves just lightly tapping and standing up, gives a light impression without applying pressure. I believe he should reconsider it.

I, too, once had a three-match losing streak against Terunofuji, but I improved my strength by studying my opponent and reviewing my own style. For Hoshoryu, being defeated to this extent may be a chance to change significantly. Since he has high abilities, he should be able to regain his strength with a single trigger, such as correcting his form or his tachi-ai.

Onosato injured himself because he was using some part of his body incorrectly. His own body taught him that reality. How he accepts this reality and uses it for the future is key. During this tournament, his body seemed to lose mass day by day, and by the final days, he looked thin, with the muscle in his back seeming depleted. He appears to have suffered considerable damage, both physically and mentally. If he doesn't review his physical condition management and daily keiko approach, he will repeat the same mistakes.

The Yokozuna Deliberation Council has called out Horseryu for his post-bout attack against Takayasu
https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2025/11/25/articles/20251125s00005000032000c.html

>Regarding Aonishiki, who is certain to be promoted to ozeki, Chairman Oshima Tadamori said, "His determination and hard work are admirable. His hidden fighting spirit is admirable. Considering the current situation in his home country, I have mixed feelings, but I was able to present him with the victory. He has made a great contribution and given hope." Meanwhile, at the Kyushu tournament, Horseryu's attitude on the ring, which sealed the victory in his match against Takayasu on the 12th day, became an issue, but Chairman Oshima explained, "Dignity is important in the sumo world, and it was one of the reasons why the London performance was so popular. There were some comments about Horseryu's attitude, but overall the opinion was that the sumo world as a whole should make an effort to improve the dignity of sumo."

aminishiki's style just perfectly matches aonishki. he couldn't have been recruited better than that.

The recruitment goes deeper than that. Aminishiki personally took in a war refugee from a distant land who didn't speak even speak his language, and that refugee devoted himself entirely to Japanese culture, language, and sumo, and through his support has accomplished everything he has so far and looks like he might just go even further. It's honestly a beautiful story.

Excellent Chris video today, he covers the YDC's pronouncements in detail as well as the many criticisms in Kisenosato's article.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5r4W8M4Be8
Kisenosato points out a lot of way that the current yokozunas might still improve their performance, but he completely neglects the possibility that seems more and more likely every basho: Dan is a generational talent or possibly even greater and there no matter how hard they try the current crop of yokozunas will inevitably end up second place to Dan. He isn't shattering all sorts of historical sumo records due luck, Dan's ability is far above anything thats been seen in sumo in ages if not ever before.

if he competes he will still be a little gimpy from the injury and weakened from being restricted from exercise during the recovery period. he could utilize the recovery period to focus on improving his lower body or some other aspect of his game, but a lot of his current approach revolves around using that left arm to block or restrict the other guy's right and he might not be too effective if can't do that.
if he chooses to get surgery on the injured shoulder he might be out until may

I think the July 2024 tournament was probably one the best I've seen since I started watching a decade ago. This year had some great stuff right off the rip even with my favorite 4-titted man choking his only chance to get a Yokozuna promotion and now cosigning himself to the slow, agonizing downward spiral of defeat. We're finally gonna get a white dude with the rope, what a time to be alive.

Dan is an overrated piece of pig shit. I remember people saying the same things about hot young guns but they always flame out in the end. The sumo grind is too much for them. Dan will be slumming it up with Mitakeumi and the other failsons.

It doesn't matter how long he can hang onto Ozeki with rotating 7-8 and 8-7 scores. The caliber of wrestlers above him is too great and his injuries make victories against wrestlers below him much harder. He's barely hanging onto his peak and it saddens me.

>nooooo thats against the ruuuuulleeesss!!!
Just change the rules lmao. Yarden has shown nothing but good faith in the face of being shit on by things outside his control.
>>
>>248826
>things outside his control
He could've come to Japan earlier.

>but muh military service
Clearly not dedicated to sumo if he's going to put it off for 3 years.

>but muh COVID
None of the stables he applied to accepted him. It wasn't like he'd have a guaranteed spot in if COVID didn't happen.

>Most stables don't have a gaijin iirc
That just emphasizes the point that it wasn't foreigner limit, but no stable wanted him.

Seriously you must be a Zionist because nobody else cares as much as this literalwho as you do.

Why do you always ignore the content of posts you reply to? Every time someone corrects shit you made up you default to these console war non sequiturs. I'm not going to hate Aonishiki, no matter how stupid you act.

So who will make it?
If you say Ichiyamamoto you will be laughed at

He is checking the the time, the Shimpan sitting in that spot acts as time keeper, indicating to the gyoji to proceed with the match or go for another round of salt.
Takamisakari is our autist.
Nicknamed Robocop for his pre-bout ritual when active.
He earned Elder stock and they tried to have him open a stable but he didn't want to.

Shishi will win a surprise yusho in 2027 by somehow managing to exclusively fight matches either fast enough to win by grugpush or slow enough that his brain can catch up and he can actually come up with a plan in his matches.

Kaki/Kazuma/Fujiryoga Takeru-type sansho sweep or randomly guy like Gonoyama or Asakoryu decide to go zensho for 9-10 days at which point there arent enough sanyaku to fight them and they get the yusho at 12-3 or even 11-4

>If the NSK let in some old jew
As soon as that happens the rules will be rewritten to not only allow, but enforce infinity gaijin, preferably nwordzuchidos. Also to make room for a women's division all time-wasting rituals and backwards traditions will be removed and the bouts will be done one after another without any salt, shiko and staring at each other for minutes. A ring will just be painted on the floor as to cut down on costs and labour, the dohyo matsuri will be replaced with a sacrifice to Moloch. Nakazori will not only apply to the hair, but also the foreskin.
Takerufuji as well as Hiyonoyama and his friends will be used for kapparot and thus never show up again.

Takayasu has the best battle face imo, shit looks like it was lifted directly off an Edo period woodblock print.
>>
If we ignore his first basho since he got injured, Kazuma's win rate from jonokuchi to sekitori has been 96.4%. He dropped a single bout and climbed 4 divisions in 4 basho. That must be the all-time record, right? Jokoryu did the same thing but his 6-1 came in Makushita so didn't jump straight to sekitori and went 5-2 in that 5th basho.

I swear to god, every basho or two we're getting these utter monsters slaughtering everyone.
>>

The rikishi formerly known as Kusano is who I would pick, he's shown he can beat anyone on any day and with a few more basho under his belt I could see him grabbing the cup for himself. Realistically you're going to have to go 2-1 against the top 3 guys from here on out and I'm not sure many can do that.

Thats what a real winner looks like, the one guy who goes through life winning everything and leaving everyone else envious and disappointed in their own mediocrity. You think there 1000 contest so theres enough prizes to go around for everyone, but then one top tier chad comes along and wins all 1000. Thats Dan, thats what he had done all his life and what he will continue to do, he will hog up all the kensho and trophies and accolades for himself and leaved everyone to cope muttering to placations to themselves such as:
>well at least I got this sansho prize, fighting spirit, thats pretty good
>I may not be top dog, but I won double digits
>the people at the supporters club really seem to like me
>I was on the DonDon highlights!! I'm famous and sheeiiitt
