Cazador, the local Vampire Lord, took advantage of the situation to turn Astarion and made him one of his spawn. Cazador is a sadist who especially enjoyed tormenting Astarion and who also is implied to have sexually abused Astarion and practically pimped him out, etc. When you meet Astarion he's kind of just this funny bloodthirsty asshole of a character, but he can have ether a heartwarming redemption arc or usurp his former master as the vampire ascendant. Both routs are fucking fantastic. He's really well written and well acted. He's a sensual character, he has great chemistry with other characters, he's tragic, but he's also enough of an asshole that people don't feel too guilty to look at fanart of him being tormented even if most of us root for him overcoming it the whole way.
