I think a big problem with horror manga is that they're either built on a single premise that won't let them explore various horror scenarios (not that it's a bad thing, that's basically the description of every great horror movie) or purely episodic, with maybe a tiny bit of an overarching story every chapter (100 Stories that Led to My Death, Dareka ga Kaita Manga, etc.), which doesn't lend to longevity either, since you'd have to make an interesting story every week or so to maintain viewership.Manga like Ura Baito and Shibito no Koe manage to avoid this issue by having recurring protagonists that can evolve as the manga go on, without even the need of an overarching story (Ura Baito went 50+ chapters before Q was introduced and some of the most famous stories are from before their introduction).I wish more manga did this kind of setup, but then comes the issues of stakes. How can you make every chapter potentially seem the last for your main characters? It's quite hard.A variation I really like is when the MCs aren't so much the protags of a ghost story, but detectives trying to figure out a mystery. That manga that got a anime (it was called Girls and Monsters and Spiriting Away or something) was basically this variation in its purest form, with actual detective monologues and stuff. If only it didn't break the tension so much with ecchi and had less generic characters...There's also action horror, which is kino when done right. A lot of gory action series have horror elements, but none of them feel like actual horror, except stuff like Dark Gathering, and it's fucking kino when done right.
