BumpYesterday someone mentioned that the characters were "out of character" here. I find all they do very natural and expected if the chars werent so contrived and crushed by Annos misery porn plot.

I think the re-take has this chain reaction thing going whereas in nge all is arranged so everythings ambiguous and tense and unresolved. In an actual setting with humams acting like humans i think rei would freak out and show that weirdo psycho underdeveloped part. Shes not just a super timid girl, shes like those feral people that grew up in a barn, theyre insanely and irreparably damaged on a developmental level and will show bizarre reactions even if theyre re-socialized.

In the last Rebuild we see Anno presents this idea with the black Liltih scene, even if Anno shows you a white Lilith on screen, some viewers will see a black one and turn it into headcanon.
