Hello again anons, welcome back for volume 6 of Moto Hagio's A Savage God Reigns. Jeremy's life remains tumultuous, with the death of his therapist, struggles in his relationships with his peers, a concerning new drug habit, and the surprise cancellation of a planned trip back to Boston. How will he cope? The works of Hagio and her contemporaries ("the '49ers") represented an experimental new direction in girls' and women's manga in terms of both content and style. I hope some anons who might be unfamiliar with these mangaka and their works, or who might generally avoid girls' comics or older manga altogether, will consider reading along and trying something new. You might be surprised. For those who would like to catch up and join in, here are the previous threads:Vol. 1: >>268448441Vol. 2: >>268501695Vol. 3: >>268540638Vol. 4: >>268581029Vol. 5: >>268615427For the Japanese-speaking anons among us: tinyurl dot com slash 4wj859ppHere we go again...
Seems my house has had a power cut. Back to our regularly scheduled programming shortly.
>>268648392I know it's not his fault and he's still fairy new to the whole situation, but Jeremy really needs to figure out how to hide his things.>>268648498Shoving something without a base in someone's ass is stupid and dangerous. People regularly end up in the ER like that. How would Greg have explained that one?
>>268648617he did say that he would kill greg
>>268648392NO
>>268648415I usually hate it when people deem fictional scenes unnecessary. That being said, this was super unnecessary. At least Greg finally dies soon after.
>>268648708>>268648697>No eyebrow remarkDamn Ian, what a disappointment
Thanks to carfish for the scans. And thanks to everyone following along at home.
>>268648392oh god, not this one
>>268651130As they say, can't make an omelet without...
>>268649793You know, for someone who claimed to be so worry about Jeremy she sure gave up on him easily.
>>268648689>How would Greg have explained that one?He wouldn't have to because Jeremy would be forced to say he did that on his own. In fact, that is the only thing I can think of that would have made the whole thing worse lol. Imagine having a precious memento of your friend shoved up your ass by your rapist and having to explain to your family that you did that to yourself for fun.
>>268650081>bottom balloon speechJesus Christ, there are ways you could've formulated that sentence while translating
>>268650113>Buried side to deceased wife he tormented into suicide>second wife buried alone somewhere elseGreg manages to be a monster even in death
>>268648392greg's shibari escapades can't possibly get any worse i say as i prepare to take a sip of my comedically oversized beverage
Don't die thread, I need to finish reading tomorrow.
>>268652053Atleast he is dead now.
>>268654060But Jeremy's psyche is ruined forever
>>268648415I didn't know that, thanks for the cool science lesson, Greg.
>>268651332didn't Jermey try to seduce her husband? You gotta draw a line somewhere
>>268648804Normal thing to carry around and offer.
>>268648708>>268648718In these pages you can see Jeremy develops the psychic power to make people do stupid shit.
>>268651012I like a man who enters a story spread legged and presenting.
>>268654686Yes
>>268650206This manga has one of the most intense paneling I've ever seen, not many artists can express characters' feelings with such passion.
stumbled across the thread three days ago and I'm glad I did this shits absolutely psychotic and its got me coming back every night. thanks OP
Hagio and the other artists of the 49 group changed the industry forever, but I wonder why there's only one Hagio manga animated. I think she was the most profilic one wasn't her?
>>26865541324**
>>268655134You're welcome anon. I'm glad to know these threads are giving people who might not have tried the series otherwise the chance to check out something new. Given how popular it's been I'm planning on some more storytimes of classic series in the future, so stay tuned...>>268655413Both Moto and Takemiya were pretty prolific, and Takemiya had a few anime adaptations, including a Terra E film and an OVA of KazeKi (not that that's really enough to do justice to a series like that). I wonder why Moto didn't, I don't know enough about the anime industry at that time to know what factors influenced it although I'm sure it's documented somewhere. Some would put Riyoko Ikeda in that group, although that's certainly debatable.
>>268651012The thing about Lindon is that he's often presented as the voice of reason, but he's also an Ian simp, which is the least reasonable position to take.
>>268655547Ikeda is probably more known if she's in the group, then Hagio after her. To be honest, some of her manga are kinda different from the usual, committee is not very found of more "experimental" stories
Thanks OP. I wish I could finish tonight but I'm just too sleepy. I hope you guys can keep this up for 7 more hours at least so I can discuss it then.
>>268650269This is a really telling page, what William is saying about how Greg's father treated Greg, and how that mirrors how Greg treated Matt
The translators skipped some author's notes, so here you go>>268540644If you go to Okurayama in Yokohama, there’s a nice big pine tree behind Okurayama Memorial Hall. They say you can see the ghosts of people who hanged themselves from it. So what would be a good tree to hang yourself from in England? Just to know for the sake of this story, of course. Fortunately, someone I knew introduced me to S-san, an English garden designer, who said “probably an English oak or a Lebanese cedar.” And then S-san’s friend heard about it and set out to figure out just what tree English people would want to hang themselves from… yikes. (By the way, I went with an oak.)>>268647950For English funerals, (according to a friend of a friend), all the relatives up to grandchildren just gather for tea and cakes. They don’t have 7th day memorials or 49th day memorials or Obon or Buddhist memorial services (obviously). So that was hard to draw. But apparently people who are close to the deceased will place flowers on their grave.
>>268655617Wikipedia has a helpful citation of one critic who places Ikeda in a different category. Of course, that's just one perspective, and many have placed her in the same basket as the other year 24 mangaka. It would be nice to read the original article and know exactly what the perceived differences between these categories are. I hadn't realised this before, but when reading on Wikipedia just now I discovered that apparently the visual impetus for Oscar was Bjorn Andreesen in Death in Venice, which was also a key influence on Moto and Takemiya and informed Gilbert's design. I think you'd have to go through with a fine-toothed comb to really work out which people are in and which are out.
>>268649434Jeremy, you're supposed to go KEIKAKU DOORI and laugh maniacally on the inside, not when like ten people can see you.
>>268649747The beginning of the CSI Ian arc.
>>268648689The same way pretty much everybody who comes to the ER with random nonsense jammed up their ass does.>Funny story, doc. This kid was hanging our new curtains, all naked fresh from shower, slipped on a puddle, and happened to fall on this egg my dog had been playing with a few minutes before. He has the worst luck, I swear.
Bump for anons who haven’t read yet
>>268649872I think Moto Hagio wanted to make the last few days with Greg as horrible as possible to hammer in how desperately and urgently Jeremy needed to kill him.
>>268651599He really didn't give a fuck about Sandra lol
>>268655906Oak does feel like the right type of tree to hang yourself from.
>>268659136It's not like either of them will care now.
>sandra had a misscarriageSo how long untill it is revealed that Greg was behind that misscarriage.
>>268648146>Maybe Matt inherited my pickinessso on some level he does know and accept Matt is his son
>>268648520one of the most Greg faces
What's Natasha's motive for still covering up the rape at this point? Greg can't threaten her any more.
>>268660671Her own shame at covering it up for so long.
>>268660671I was thinking probably to not drive Ian mad since Ian looks up to his dad.Imagine if you aunt told you that your dad who you looked up to was actually raping the son of his new wife on the reg right after he died.It is the right thing to do, but you have no idea how he might take it.
>>268649993Hagio flexing again
>>268650081Nice to see things flipped and Ian becomes the one who looks unstable and hysterical instead of Jeremy.
>>268648454Top candidate for most fucked up scene in the manga.
>>268651599there's probably some recently added instructions for Jeremy's grave too if he'd died first
>>268651035Thanks as usual, OP. It's been nice to see people who've never read this appreciate it.
>>268648520>>268648536>you want to kill me? beautiful. love it.>>268648617>NOOO NOT LIKE THATwhat was his fucking problem?
>>268647997How could you NOT molest Jeremy?
>>268661925Greg is right, the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Greg rented a mansion on Jeremy's mind, forever and ever. His hate is like a trophy, it means Jeremy is always thinking of Greg.
>>268648655For some reason this is the most upsetting page imo
>>268648672>oh i just happened to listen to him talk about his gf and that's why he was shaking and crying under the covers all day and lost his voice>oh i just happened to be in his room at 1 in the morning because i really needed to comfort him then and not when he got back from school>oh i just happened to be alone in the car with him and *convoluted chain of events that sounds ridiculous* and that's why he's having a mental breakdown right now, no biggiehow did people keep falling for it?
>>268663129IMO it would have been a different story if Greg hadn't first assaulted Greg in the US. People in England only knew the Jeremy after Greg's abuse, where he was already behaving somewhat erratically and looking over-sensitive.Of course, Sandra had the clearest picture of changes in Jeremy's behaviour and psyche, but we've seen her expertly sweep those under the carpet.
>>268663459>Greg hadn't first assaulted GregBut who was Greg?
>>268648947If she had trouble sleeping last week then I wonder if she saw anything
>>268648947Greg always has an excuse ready.
>>268649041So for their final night together, Greg re-enacted the death of his first wife? I wonder if he was aware he was doing that.
>>268649195>>268649210These two pages would be better to see in book format because they seem to intentionally have the same paneling and would have been placed side by side I think.
>>268649313>>268649329Sandra growing a backbone is pretty noteworthy.
>>268649120that's a long-winded way to say "you're so moe"
>>268663459Exactly. Nobody in England knows Jeremy’s normal personality, so they have nothing to compare it to. If his own doting mother doesn’t seem to think there’s anything suspicious going on, why should they?
>>268660781She’s also ashamed for being a victim herself, and for essentially covering up Greg’s shit for two decades. And as it stands, every adult Ian has ever loved was betraying him all along. That’s one hell of a mindfuck.
>>268649767Chapter 1 finally reached 6 volumes in.
>>268649872Sometimes a girl gets lost in the sauce.
>>268649828I love Ian acting like "that kind of person" is the most grievous insult imaginable instead of just vaguely rude.
>>268665300Her paranoia about Debbie implies she's been aware of Greg's sketchy behavior for a while. Sleeping pills or no, he was missing from their bed every weekend. I wonder if she thought it was his secretary because she found a dark, curly hair on his clothes at some point. That she's trying to separate Greg from Jeremy does point to her finally connecting the dots.
>>268649054>>268649066i can't imagine anything more terrifying than having greg's dumb horny face leering down at you being the last thing you see
>>268650113RIP in pieces, bitch.
>>268648470>>268648454Jesus Christ
>>268649734the giant fro though
This series put shit like Boys' Abyss to the it's deserved place, aka trash.
Is there translations for that Naoki Urusawa show where he interviews Hagio?
>>268670182The only time it cut to her during one of Greg's night sessions was during his birthday iirc, and she was sound asleep so the medicine seems to generally do its thing except that one time. It is interesting that she suddenly became much more firm with Greg at the end, but Sandra is so weak-hearted that if she actually witnessed something beyond her ability to brush off as her imagination, she would probably just break. That's why, if she witnessed anything at all, it's most likely she only saw he wasn't in bed
>>268650252>>268650269It sounds like a lot of Greg's behavior stemmed from unresolved childhood trauma. It sure sucks he had to go hurt a bunch of people over it instead of getting help.
>>268648689Ever read Guts, by Palahniuk?>http://readfulltext.blogspot.com/2013/10/guts-by-chuck-palahniuk.htmlIts easy to cover that stuff up.
>>268650569Mr Wedge doing his best David Byrne in Stop Making Sense cosplay
>>268649852jeremy is so bad at hiding his schemes lmao
>>268650774Detective novels have rotted Ian's brain, he thinks walking into a room and announcing the culprit to everyone will get him arrested
>>268650147everybody's got that drunkard uncle who tells it like it is
>>268650974>>268650993At last we've come to the most pivotal scene of the manga: Ian commits fashion crimes by wearing cow print with leg warmers.
>>268671735Eh, Sandra's tantrums are much more calculated than they seem. Her weakness is almost as much of an act as her nice girl persona. Her breakdowns always conveniently happen when she's feeling neglected or when she wants to punish someone. Whatever she found out made her switch tactics on Greg, so it must've been big. And it seems to have involved Jeremy.
>>268671886would Greg have been as popular as Auguste if he had been a bishie instead of an older man
>>268648520Gregging all over the place.
>>268673378IMO Greg should have been more popular than Auguste anyway. Auguste has the same slimeball sex pest qualities but not even a fraction of the entertainment value. And it's not like he was very good-looking among the dad figures either, Serge's dad kinda mogs him.
>>268651012>>268647910>shows up in one whole page at the very end>manages to snatch the cover of one of the most important volumesLindon sweep

Corrections.>>268649015"I'm only going to (etc.)" should be "I'll go light on the binding tonight.">>268650664The blank speech bubble is Nadia saying Ian's name. Now that we're in carfish territory, I ought to be checking the raws more diligently, but I've been super busy so I'm sticking with stuff that stands out as weird and ignoring ones that I think are easy enough to figure out without me explaining (like Karen referring to Sandra's grandmother as her own). If I can find the time this weekend, I'll try to go back and check if there were any big ones worth mentioning.

>>268655906Thanks, anon. I've never given much thought to regional funerals. I guess over here it has more to do with what religion is being practiced than the location. I've only seen catholic funerals myself.
>>268648415This is beyond disgusting even for Greg's standards.Comparing the cloaca to the anus? Seriously? If you really love him teach him proper biology, for fuck's sake.
>>268662628Normally Moto doesn't show the immediate aftermath. She cuts out the sex, but also the 'afterglow'. Here you finally get to see Jeremy immediately afterwards. Where he can't do anything but sit there shaking.
