I've been thinking about why people have been saying the later chapters stopped being effective. Maybe the author couldn't handle the increased story scope? The early chapters were centered on Yoshida, the middle chapters were about fleshing out the world and showing off medieval stuff, and the last one are about a conflict where Yoshida is just one small part.The arc could have been funny. The conflict is thematic (power of the individual vs society, the unstoppable march of progress, etc.) and the major players have strong visions and are unscrupulous. Furthermore, all of the characters involved are flawed and have blind spots. Most of them could even fit a comedy archetype of some kind. There are some isolated neat jokes. The characters clash with each other like they should given their objectives, personalities, and limited vision. Now that I think about it maybe the author just didn't think hard enough about how the archetypes could clash in an interesting way because there were more characters than before.I wonder how it could have been handled more strongly?
