Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the fifteenth volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>273103259

Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the one short story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theatre series that came out around this time. Today, the scans I have of the one shot are the official VIZ ones. This story only got collected recently. Today, that will be "with CAT".
>>
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 15 in the 3-in-1. Koga. Also, apparently, last thread I said Volume 14 for this post. Whoops.

Also, I meant to fix Rumic Theatre to Rumic Theater in the OP and didn't. I'm a mess.
>>
What an outfit. Also, the original title is ふたりの気持ち which means 'Their Feelings' or 'The Feelings of the Two'. You can probably guess whose.

September 29th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: Do you have any annoying habits?
A: I don't think so."
>>
>>273206464
TB being tuberculosis.
>>
>>273206512
Abidas.
>>
>>273206528
Kagome too sickly to have a secret boyfriend, of course.
>>
>>273206512
So who did give her all of those sick leaves? Based Doc.
>>
>>273206544
Reminder, this is why she is as mad as she is. Being accused of doing something more with Koga than simply not wanting him to die.
>>
>>273206588
And this is why he's mad. Also, Sango learns what's up. I think the whole 'well only works for those two' as been shown, but maybe not stated as plainly as it is here. Sango's up to speed now.

>>273206576
Honestly, I think the school just takes her grandfather's word. Japan! (But also you know, manga)
>>
>>273206636
Kaede is a wonderful lady.
>>
>>273206675
Propitious (indicating or giving good fortune). If I ever knew the word, I forgot it. Pretty obvious in context though.
>>
>>273206728
Furinkan I think mentions that this is the first time we see WacDonald's' name (before we saw the W and that's it) but looking at it now, it clearly says Wacdnald's.
>>
>>273206772
This is a bit of an infamous translation, because well, it is really funny. But the thought bubble of Kagome's friends in Japanese indicated that they thought Inuyasha was a ヤンキー or yankee, a type of delinquent associated with motorcycle gangs and dyed hair (obviously deriving from the English word). I honestly wouldn't be surprised if VIZ kept it in the latest localization because the line is just funnier than "He's a delinquent?".

Also, I just noticed you can make out some burgers here. I couldn't figure out what a tamatori burger would be (tamatori seems to mean jewel taker or like, pearl diver), but Teri-Cheese Burger would probably be a Teriyaki Cheese Burger.
>>
>>273206636
Give her a pass, you literally have make out seasions with your ex ghost gf in front of her.
>>
>>273206952
I could go for a Wac Burger right now.
>>
>>273206978
Probably didn't realize how the whole 'murder' thing came across.
>>
>>273207015
Cute.
>>
>>273207015
Battered Kagome, she was ready to share with Kikyo.
>>
>>273207029
Don't be a creep.

Also, google lens failed at reading this, but I figured it out. The bag says チップス or uh, chips.
>>
>>273207354
The other word on the bag? ポテト or "potato". I don't know why I bothered with that.
>>
>>273207421
Oh no, his potetochippusu! Also, did I mention I like Sota? He's great.
>>
>>273207450
I guess you do up your hair before a bath.
>>
>>273207483
End of chapter! Ah well.
>>
Original title is 井戸の向こう which seems to mean "Beyond the Well" or "Across the Well". This works.

You may notice that this date is a bit later than you'd expect, that's because the previous issue didn't have Inuyasha but instead had the oneshot "with CAT" which I will be storytiming after this.

October 6th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: If you had a shop, what would you name it?
A: Hanshin Department Store."
>>
>>273207678
That pencil looks particularly long for some reason.
>>
>>273206464
Those boots are a choice. Maybe not a good one, but definitely a choice.
>>
>>273207711
I like the speed lines in panel two.
>>
>>273207734
Sigh...
>>
>>273206330
Anime remake announcement soon
>>
>>273207748
Look at his little face.

>>273207779
Eh, maybe. I'm hoping for Mao though.
>>
>>273207817
Shippo is a little over his head. Also, notice Shippo also didn't say "lets his wolves eat people". Also, Buyo, yay!

Furinkan has a note about Kagome's room:
"Kagome's room is fairly unique in that it is decorated in a style that is called "wayoshitsu" (和洋室). This means that it is a traditional Japanese style mixed with Western style. We see she has tatami mats for her flooring and a western style bed.

In a 2022 interview the voice actresses from Yashahime discuss their fondness for Kagome's room's design."

Here's that interview. Spoilers for Inuyasha, obviously: https://furinkan.com/features/interviews/yashahimevoice.html
>>
>>273207873
Hope that was the lead and not the pencil.
>>
>>273207899
Getting up early to study never worked for me, honestly.
>>
>>273207919
No one taught him not to do this.
>>
>>273207941
>>
>>273206528
I wonder why they make her into one of Kagome’s friends in the anime.
>>
>>273207956
Five am, time to study.

>>273207958
That is weird.
>>
>>273207978
Could've been anybody.
>>
>>273208001
Letting him off nicely.
>>
>>273208022
Whoops.
>>
>>273208043
Took the first step.
>>
>>273208108
Oh?
>>
>>273208127
Oh.
>>
>>273208146
End of chapter. Well, she was spot on. I wonder if that last line was teasing Inuyasha for him coming and going.
>>
Fight's over. Back to business.

October 20th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: What sort of license do you wish you had?
A: I wish I could effortlessly get a drivers license."
>>
>>273208307
Man, background Kiraras are something else.
>>
>>273208338
Another day, another dozen or so villagers dying.
>>
>>273208404
They might want to have some fun that can't be shown in a shonen manga.
>>
>>273208487
Oh no, another pair of bandits!
>>
>>273208505
Doesn't feel like dying.
>>
>>273208583
There they are. Miroku at least didn't prepare to use the wind tunnel before their appearance.
>>
>>273208617
Ew. Less cute.
>>
>>273208631
The bear joins the mantis demon and the oni with its exposed brain look.
>>
>>273208692
We get to meet the north cave wolf demon clan. They have darker furs. Furs or fur? It is hard to tell where their body ends. And yes, Koga is of the Eastern Wolf Clan.
>>
>>273208745
I kind of like the dynamic of the different clans.
>>
>>273208774
I also like that there is some real dissent within the clan as well, without them immediately killing each other.
>>
>>273208792
I guess they all have tails? Hard to tell at times.
>>
>>273208307
AIEEEEEEEEEEE FUCKING BEES!
>>
>>273208834
Hm? Who is this?
>>
>>273208855
Unsurprisingly, Koga's best friends stayed with him.
>>
>>273208880
Hm, that last line maybe should've been 'the shards'? Like all of the ones over at the castle? A little odd in context.
>>
>>273208910
Uh oh.
>>
>>273208926
End of chapter! I honestly don't know if the Saimyosho accidentally revealed Naraku's castle here or if this is part of his machinations and he lead them to it. I imagine he doesn't micromanage every single one and some of the swarms are just collecting shards on their own. But I wouldn't be surprised either way.
>>
>>273208792
Well Koga, they are about to do to you the same thing you did to that random village last volume, no hard feelings right?.
>>
>>273208855
ENTER SECOND BEST GIRL
>>
Original title is 屍舞 which Google read as Chinese and said it meant, well, "corpse dance". It also translates as that in Japanese. Anyway, I've heard the phrase "corpse dance" before and I have no idea what the origin of it is. I don't know if it pertains to a particular story or ceremony, but apparently, it also exists in Japanese. There was also a Taiwanese short film by that name in 2022, though they localized the name in English as just "The Remains".

I really wonder if this is an East Asian myth of some sort. Also, it is sometimes localized (in Inuyasha and other places) as "Dance of the Dead", which I believe is just another term for the French term Dance Macabre.

October 27th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: Where do you go to heal?
A: In my bed."
>>
>>273209150
Big ol' pile of bodies.
>>
>>273209177
Bleh.

>>273209075
Well, they're gonna do some more too.
>>
>>273209177
F Wolfguys.
>>
>>273209197
The living dead!
>>
>>273209222
The fan is part of the dancing theme. Since, well, lots of Japanese dances use fans. I don't feel like copying and pasting wikipedia at the moment regarding this, since there are a great variety of traditional Japanese dances that incorporate it.
>>
>>273209314
>>
>>273209333
Perfect timing.
>>
>>273209370
Not what it looks like. Inuyasha-style.
>>
>>273208973
>play Kikyo and Inuyasha against each other, earning their enmity
>repeatedly try to use Sesshomaru as a pawn, insulting his pride and earning his enmity
>put a curse on a monk, cursing also his descendants up to Miroku, earning his enmity
>manipulate Sango’s brother into killing their entire clan, then having him die and then revive as a pawn/hostage, earning Sango’s enmity
>murder most of Koga’s wolf clan as yet another plot against someone else, earning his enmity
Naraku does really suck at manipulating people, yet excels at pissing people off.
>>
>>273209383
So yeah, it was machinations. Very well timed machinations.
>>
>>273209370
Koga getting Bambozoled harder than Sango.
>>
>>273209405
I wonder if the sheath even has a sword in it or if the hilt is just built in.
>>
>>273209439
Oh wow, an extra powerful one. Lucky stuff.
>>
>>273209450
Hm.
>>
>>273209395
Yeah, pissing everyone off enough for them to put their diferences aside just to get rid of you is a great talent.
>>
>>273209460
>>
>>273209659
>>
>>273209669
Maybe her word can make him see the truth?
>>
>>273209712
Ah well.
>>
>>273209739
We haven't seen one of these sonic style attacks in a while. That's honestly the only way I can interpret these motion lines. Anyway, our other heroes have other stuff to do.
>>
>>273209761
End of chapter! We got a name. I'll post the name meaning in the next chapter, since it is titled after her.
>>
The original title of this chapter and this chapter's name is 神楽 which is Kagura. Kagura is ancient Shinto music and dancing. It may also refer to a specific ritual in Shinto. It literally means 'god-entertainment'. There's apparently two components, mai and odori. It seems like a lot of variation exists. Anyway, continuing the dance theme. Here's Furinkan's note about her name:

"Kagura's name is taken from an ancient Shinto song and dance. This is why her attacks had dance nomenclature."

November 3rd, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: If you made a theme park, what would the theme be?
A: Three Kingdoms Park."
Furinkan's note: "The Three Kingdoms is an era of Chinese history."
>>
>>273209905
>>
>>273209948
>>
>>273209966
Wow. I wonder if the Japanese sound effects were this skinny and extreme.
>>
>>273209981
Ouch.
>>
>>273209994
>>
>>273210025
Apparently, Naraku had two different voice actors in the anime, one for the baboon pelt version and one for the noble. I find that a bit odd.

>>
>>273210315
Furinkan has a note on the anime episode (but not on the manga chapter...):

"Kagura uses her attack Fujin no mai (風刃の舞/Dance of the Wind Blade)."

Apparently it was called Dance of Blades in some localizations?
>>
>>273210366
End of chapter. The Japanese war fan is a real thing that existed, but it obviously wasn't used like this.
>>
Starting off with a page. Cover is on the next one. These first four pages were originally in color.

Also, the original title was 風使い which seems to translate to 'Wind User' or 'Wind Expert'. I guess VIZ went for alliteration.

November 10th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: Who is a celebrity that had a particularly autumnal image?
A: Ryu Chishu."
>>
>>273210457
What a cover, right? Ah well.
>>
>>273210479
>>
>>273210538
Heh, someone called her out on this. She's said this line surprisingly often, but some of those times definitely were actual warning shots. Or at least, she sold it to me.

>>

>>
>>273210592
>>
>>273210562
Kagome should really consider joining the archery club at her school.
>>
>>273210632
I wonder how many of the emphasized words are from the Japanese text. I feel like I don't see bolded words in panels often but I admit I don't look at Japanese panels very often.
>>
>>273210691
Good job, Shippo.
>>
>>273210722
Hm?

>>273210685
Her scant time in the present has to be used for studying.
>>
>>273210739
Oops, all Naraku!
>>
>>273210758
>>
>>273210777
Furinkan actually just put the note for both attacks on this chapter for some reason:

"Her other attack is "Ryuja no mai" (竜蛇の舞/Dragon Snake Dance)."
>>
>>273210822
Twisters and tornadoes are associated with dragons in Japan. In fact, their word for tornado is 竜巻, Tatsumaki or Dragon Roll (like swirl or bundle).

They don't usually impale things, I think.
>>
>>273210964
Not gentle assistance. But he can't really move.
>>
>>273210998
Hehe, that second panel.
>>
>>273206544
And not even a warning. What if Shippo catches it?
>>
>>273211008
Even for Kagome. That's pretty strong.
>>
>>273211042
Hm.
>>
>>273206772
You said that last time.
>>
>>273211062
Bit of a counter.
>>
>>273211110
End of chapter! That's the plan?

>>273211098
I looked it up and apparently, I lied, you totally could see the name though partially obscured and through a window so it was mirrored. But I didn't say the exact same thing, so there. Ah well.
>>
November 17th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: What is a gift you give yourself after work?
A: Sleep."

Just cut his arm, it will probably grow back i guess.
>>

>>
>>273211272
Is this really a 'same as Naraku' thing? But I guess his powers were terribly sensitive to Kagome's arrows.

>>273211271
Well, they definitely heal easier but I don't think they can regrow limbs. I mean, otherwise Sesshomaru wouldn't be using loaners still.
>>
>>273211300
>>
>>273211313
>>
>>273211353
Sure looks like it.
>>
>>273211373
Furinkan has the usual note about the golem or puppet again. Not copy and pasting it again.
>>
>>273211410
Makes sense.
>>
>>273211432
Hm. Here, Kagura calls it wind. I wonder how this was phrase in Japanese. I imagined it more as 'force' since you know, the wind in Kaze no Kizu refers to the wind that he is essentially avoiding with his slice.
>>
>>273211457
Hm.
>>
>>273211472
I wonder if Rumiko planned this when she put feathers in her hair. I bet not.
>>
>>273211488
Of course, if this was part of the plan, it wouldn't be the real castle. Plus, the whole 'no one else around' thing.
>>
>>273211502
>>
>>273211515
End of chapter. Hmmm.
>>
November 24th, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: What is your favorite potted dish?
A: Alfonsino with hot pot is delicious."
>>
>>273211565
I often wonder where Shippo and Kirara are during these scenes.
>>
>>273211515
Clearly we have to find that tattoo artist!
>>
>>273211579
Well, there's Shippo.

>>273211596
The usual cheat with the angle of the sword drawing.

Hey, someone called it.
>>
>>273211658
Hm. It was too strong for Kagome, but maybe the arrows?
>>
>>273211671
Honestly, pretty cool. But it does raise some questions for me. I guess it is just a tool to channel without touching it.
>>
>>273211683
Hwaah. Also, goofy Kagome.
>>
>>273211706
He ran like a bitch again.
>>
>>273211706
Weakga the fearful.
>>
>>273211706
Here's what Rumiko Takahashi had to say about Koga on Twitter on September 19th, 2021:

"Rumiko Takahashi: Koga is a demon with fragments of the Shikon Jewel, I wanted to create a demon that wedges himself into the story and immediately likes Kagome from the get-go. I thought that would be really amusing.

I also wanted to have a character that showed it wasn't bad to run away anytime he sensed danger."

I do think that last bit is pretty refreshing in manga where so often characters are just willing to die out of pride rather than live to fight another day.
>>
>>273211821
Meanwhile, at the real castle...
>>
>>273211838
Quite an entrance.
>>
>>273211852
Hm.
>>
>>273211862
Apparently, the anime censored this and made it just a sphere.
>>
>>273211895
Mystery solved. At least for us.
>>
>>273211912
Hey, the modern first aid kit again. Also, some water bottles and a flashlight.
>>
>>273211934
Oh my god, Miroku, why would you say that out loud?
>>
>>273211947
He knows the secret!
>>
>>273211986
End of chapter! Another new character. This one's name in Japanese is 神無, which means "godless". Same first kanji as Kagura.
>>
The name used for this chapter's title was in Japanese 小春 which apparently means 'little spring' (as in the season). It is an actual name.

I don't normally like covers like this, but I do like how they are drawn here.

December 1st, 1999. Author's note:
"Q: What song do you listen to to get your fighting spirit going?
A: Traditional Japanese music from the hit charts."
>>
>>273212048
Foggy.
>>
>>273207354
Imagine the smell.
>>
>>273212063
Furinkan says this is a "bamboo water carrier. This flask is known as a suitou (水筒)." Now we know.
>>
>>273211934
Such bigotry, Naraku is a beautiful multiplicity.
>>
>>273212075
Wrong to do that, but he's not wrong in his assessment.
>>
>>273211986
Naraku is such a coward. I think that at this point, Naraku could have killed Inuyasha if he took some risk.
Koga and Inuyasha fighting, sending Kagura and him ambushing them at the end could have been a solid plan, but like always, Naraku is too much of a coward to put himself in danger.
>>
>>273212092
Quite a punch.
>>
>>273212102
He's probably still afraid of Kagome or Kikyo destroying him again.
>>
>>273212116
What a coincidence.
>>
>>273212127
Furinkan has a long-winded note regarding oil merchants. I'm posting it unaltered:

"The guilds of the feudal age of Japan were known as za (座/seat). After the Meiji restoration, the za was either replaced, eclipsed or would gradually adopt more modern forms of business, eventually giving rise to the modern zaibatsu and keiretsu monopolies of the 20th century. one hundred years into the Sengoku period, Oda Nobunaga briefly took command of the country, and established "free" markets and guilds, known respectively as rakuichi (楽市) and rakuza (楽座). These dealt a severe blow to the power and influence of the older, monopolistic za, but did not replace them. Several other types of trade associations came into being around this time as well; though it could be argued that they replaced the za, it seems more likely that the change was a more gradual, organic one, and that the za could be said to have continued to exist, just in new forms and with new names. Saitō Dōsan (1494-1556), who was a monk turned oil merchant turned daimyō of Mino."

>>
>>273212686
End of chapter, end of volume. I guess it is just dance relates to Corpse Dance, dance relates to fans. Fans relate to wind. Nothing too crazy.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Inuyasha related. I have some stuff I'll be using to bump the thread here and there.

I will be returning Wednesday to dump Volume 16. Right now though, I'll be dumping "with CAT".
>>
>>273212646
I usually forget that Miroku is a strong fighter for human standards.
>>
ウイズキャット or "with CAT" was published on October 13th, 1999 in Weekly Shonen Sunday instead of the usual Inuyasha chapter. As such, it was published around the same time as these chapters.

This translation is an official one released by VIZ and since this wasn't collected until 2022, the art isn't flipped. Also, it has the original full colors! Yay! Thank you VIZ.

I actually haven't really reread this one since I bought Came the Mirror (the collection this was in). I think it is a good time.

Oh and we actually have an author's comment for this one:
"Q: As far as today's youth are concerned please tell us what you think of them.
A: They should stop wearing those tall sandals! In times of calamity you'd make a slow escape."

Hah, the other girls have henohenomoheji faces in the bottom panel. Also, here's Furinkan's note about these names:

"The name Miya (美弥) is written with the kanji meaning "increasing beauty".
Shuta (週太) is written with the kanji for "week" and "plump"."

I don't think these are the typical kanji used for these names.
>>
>>273212896
Aw. She was crying.
>>
>>273212913
Another Furinkan note:

"Torachiyo (虎千代) is written with the kanji meaning "thousand tiger era". Because of it having "tora/tiger" in the name, it is not an uncommon name for pet cats."

He looks like Buyo. Very cute.

That reminds me, I think I discovered something interesting. So far we haven't seen any human-looking yokai eat people have we? Only monstrous-looking yokai were shown doing that. Even if it's mentioned, it's never shown. Like with what Koga did to the village. Only the wolves, not Koga himself, were eating humans. The Thunder Brothers are widely known to eat girls alive but there was no scene explicitly showing that. Urasue planned to pickle and eat Kagome but obviously that never happened. The false water god eats the sacrificed children but we didn't see that happen either. That's all of them so far right?

Reading the manga gives you more time to absorb the story beats, and it helps me understand why women like Inuyasha so much, they'd love to be in a love triangle with 2 tough animal boys. And with other characters like Hojo and Miroku, it is basically a harem manga.

Not sure if this was discussed yet, but if anyone's wondering why the characters sometimes break into old timey English, it's likely because Gerard Jones did the rewrite. This may actually be an older version of the Viz translations, because I read that they were redone after he was imprisoned for having and sharing pizza.. You'll see a few examples of this in other manga, and in the case with DBZ, it got phased out.

I wonder how long it'll go.

I mentioned him and his rewrites when it came to some of his other work (one-shots and whatnot). These are scans of the latest VIZ translation, so I assume the archaic phrases were either kept or relocalized for villagers since they had a certain patois.
