Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the thirtieth volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>274849040

Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 30 in the 3-in-1. Shippo got them chupa chups.
>>
Original title is 観音堂. Machine translation says 'temple dedicated to Kannon'. Furinkan notes that: "The title of this chapter "Hall of the Bodhisattva" is referenced a bit more clearly in the original Japanese where the translation would be "Hall of Kannon" (観音堂/Kannondou). Kannon is a Bodhisattva, one of the most famous in Japanese Buddhism. Known as Avalokiteshvara in India and Guanyin in China. Kannon is the deity depicted in the wall scroll that has been devouring people."

Also, I think I once used this cover to put Sango's face on top of Kagome's face with some transparency to discuss Rumiko same face.

November 13th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What is something you've lined up to buy?
A: I've never stood in line to buy something before."
>>
>>274983038
In typical anime fashion, the big distinctions between similarly proportioned characters are in minor differences in hair.
>>
>>274983083
Girl talk.
>>
>>274983100
Sango can't defeat Kagome in this.
>>
>>274983152
Kirara being a tattletale.
>>
>>274982878
Good to see you, OP. I was worried you'd fallen into Naraku's clutches.
>>
>>274983195
Shippo is conscientious.
>>
>>274983250
Hm?

>>274983231
Nope! Just running a bit late because of work and some other errands.
>>
>>274983310
Wrong move.
>>
>>274983414
Unusual.
>>
>>274983432
?!
>>
>>274983515
Furinkan has a long note regarding war widows:

"The idea of war widows who are taken in after the death of their husbands has a historical tradition in Japan. Chiyome Mochizuki (望月千代女), who lived during the Sengoku era (the time in which Takahashi's Inuyasha is set) is often considered the historical figure that established the concept of the "kunoichi" (くノ一/female ninja). Mochizuki was said to have taken in widows and trained them in the ways of war, creating assassins and spies. Though kunoichi have filled popular culture, they are more elusive when it comes to factual historical research. In fact, it is difficult to establish the historical veracity of Chiyome Mochizuki, who is not mentioned in any historical records of the era. It seems she is likely a fictional character created during the 1970s rather than a true historical personage and that the name "kunoichi" is perhaps an exclusively modern term."
>>
>>274983534
What a line.
>>
>>274983550
Look at Kirara.
>>
>>274983576
Itty bitty kitty
>>
>>274983576
Yeah, obviously this stuff reminds me of Mermaid Saga pretty directly.
>>
>>274983600
Shippo is miniscule.
>>
>>274983632
Every time.
>>
>>274983652
He is still using it.
>>
>>274983663
End of chapter. Some halitosis.
>>
November 27th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: Who is your favorite idol?
A: Kiyohiko Ozaki is not an idol."
>>
>>274983748
>>
>>274983760
Here they come.
>>
>>274983776
>>
>>274983792
Gross.
>>
>>274983800
>>
>>274983814
Furinkan notes that: "As the creature recounts its past to Miroku it says that it was a demon that lived in a swamp. In Japanese it specifically refers to itself as an "ayakashi" (妖) rather than "yokai" (妖怪). The terms can often be used more or less interchangably, however ayakashi, historically, refers to a water or ocean based type of demon/yokai."

They also talk about Mao, which also uses the term a lot, though differently. We'll get to it eventually.

Sangobros... do we suck?
>>
>>274983800
Hey I know this tag
>>
>>274983933
She couldn't do it. And big enough situation to stop using the talismans.

>>274983934
Sango probably has some significant difficulty attacking humans and hesitated too much. Emotionally weak, remember?
>>
>>274984034
Furinkan's not going to tell me what this oversized thumbtack looking thing is?

I have no idea what it is. I googled a lot of stuff and got nothing.
>>
>>274984193
NOT THE BEE WOMAN AHHHHHHHH
>>
>>274984193
I figured it out! It is a Japanese Buddhist Temple Candle Holder. The spike is to hold the candle.
>>
>>274984278
Furinkan has a note here about the sound effect localized as "blug": "When Miroku punches Wakana in the stomach to make her vomit up the salamander egg she it displays the onomatopoeia "gofu" (ゴフ). This is the sound of "coughing"."
>>
>>274984193
>Miroku refuses to take a woman inside of him
>>
>>274984319
Hey, I've seen this sort of thing in a doujin
>>
>>274984319
Blug once more.

>>274984250
Hehehe. Every time.
>>
>>274984385
Come on in, the water's fine.
>>
>>274984408
Yeah, I imagine it would need a lot.
>>
>>274984445
End of chapter! I assume it said hanyo here. Also, she didn't manage to bite through her tongue in time, it seems.
>>

December 4th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: Is there something that you've gotten regardless of it's price?
A: A Bustamante necklace."
>>
>>274984562
You think it covers more too?

>>
>>274984927
Oh no.
>>
>>274984941
End of chapter. I'm glad Rumiko had the decency to have this page rather than a week break of 'what if Sango killed Miroku'. Anyway, Furinkan notes that: "The sound effect around Kirara when she comes to Miroku's side after Sango cuts him is "うろうろ" (uro uro). This is the sound of "hanging around"."
>>
>>274984890
>The only way to save your gf is to gut punch her until she pukes

Ryonabros are feasting
>>
Original title is 特別なおなご. This translation is accurate, but Furinkan notes that "The Japanese title could be more succinctly translated as "special lady"." Maybe it lacks a certain bit of dramatic weight for VIZ.

December 11th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What sort of smells do you like or hate?
A: Curry and freesia."
>>
>>274984786
If Kirara was like Charmander, then she'd probably die if her flames were extinguished
>>
>>274985053
>>
>>274985065
Man, you guys pointing out how Sango fights usually go make me appreciate this one a lot.
>>
>>274985103
Furinkan notes that: "Sango springs a hidden blade from her sleeve when she is fighting against Miroku. Beneath the torn cloth of her sleeve you can see that her outfit has chain mail (鎖具足/kusari gusoku) beneath it."

I remember someone asked about what is being protected by Sango's bodysuit, well, here's the answer. Everything under it.
>>
>>274985136
>>
>>274985151
There it goes.
>>
>>274985200
>You don't have to tell me what happened, but you have to puke up all these eggs
>>
>>274985200
Here's the answer to that question.
>>
>>274985103
I'm pretty sure Sango's fighting skills increase 100x if she's being mind controlled or coerced
>>
>>274985235
Happy ending for these two.

分断. Machine translation gives me 'division' or 'split into parts'. I feel we had a title like this not that long ago.

December 18th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What is a gift that made you happy as a child?
A: I really don't remember."
>>
>>274986004
Furinkan has this note again: "Inuyasha refers to "small fry demons" frequently. The term he uses is "zako yokai" (雑魚妖怪)."

>>
Original title is 炎蹄. This is a proper name but Furinkan does note that it translates to "blazing hoof".

This seems unrelated to the pokemon.

December 25th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What is an event you'd like to see live and in person?
A: Hanshin wins."
>>

>>
>>274987219
He's used shields before.

I assume this is shoki. It seems VIZ goes for miasma for the actual poisonous gas rather than evil made manifest.

Nakamazoned
>>
>>274987928
Anyway, least it wasn't the horse's shield.
>>
>>274988017
End of chapter. Still got that expression down.
>>
>>274987928
I mean he got the Red Tessaiga from a random old bat demon. The Bakuryuha getting sidelined seemed way more egregious to me.
>>
白童子 was the original title. It is also a proper noun, but the kanji mean 'white child' per Furinkan and machine translation.

January 8th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What is something that made you laugh recently?
A: I smile everyday."
>>
>>274988111
They don't get it.

>>274988045
Well, the Bakuryuha needs specific circumstances since they need to have demonic power to bounce back. I know the Red Tessaiga's ultimate source ended up being whatever, but the setup and build up was extensive for it. Like, didn't Totosai even say he had to do this? He didn't mince words about it either. It wasn't like Totosai said 'to beat barriers at the level Naraku is at now, you need to do this'.
>>
>>274988227
>>
>>274988241
Furinkan notes the term used for this borderland in the Japanese: "the boundary between the living world and the afterlife (あの世とこの世の境)."

Also, spilled the beans.

>>274988379
Furinkan has a note: "Brat/Urchin - A term often used to describe almost any child in the series (including Hakudoshi and Inuyasha when he encounters older demons) is "gaki" (ガキ). This comes up very frequently in the original Japanese and is how Kagura typically refers to Hakudoshi and how Inuyasha refers to nearly all children he meets."
>>
>>274988526
I wonder if that is related.

>>
January 15th, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What is a habit of yours that's been pointed out by others?
A: It doesn't seem there is one."

Oh, it seems they didn't get a break this holiday. No double issue.
>>
>>274988855
Furinkan notes that: "Rin tells Jaken that when he sighs he blows happiness away (ため息つくとしあわせが逃げるんだよ。). This is a Japanese idiom, this is because sighing was seen as giving a negative impression."

Wonder where she heard that one.

Furinkan notes that: "Fox, Racoon Dog and Otter - Shippo and Kanta mistake what type of demons each other are, both of them thinking that the other is a "tanuki" (タヌキ/racoon dog). Shippo is, of course, a "kitsune" (狐/fox) while Kanta explains that he is a "kawauso" (カワウソ/otter)."

Furinkan does note that Miroku does work with an actual tanuki sometimes.

To add a bit of a sad bit of real life to this happy moment, Furinkan notes that: "Kanta and his father are "Japanese River Otters". These were once plentiful in Japan, but are now believed to be extinct. The last few sightings of the animal in the wild occurred in the 1960s with the final confirmed appearance of the otter being in 1979. It was officially declared extinct in 1991."

End of chapter. I didn't remember a full body but I think I just overlooked it last time.

I have an excuse to post this bit from Rumiko Takahashi's twitter on July 31st, 2022 where she discussed Inuyasha's father:
"Rumiko Takahashi: He is no longer with us, but he is a big part of his sons' lives. The model for the skull is a saber-toothed tiger. I happened to get a specimen of it and thought I would use it when I had the chance.

He seems to be very critical of Sesshomaru, but I thought he was thinking, "He's the older brother, he's a real demon, and he should be strong on his own.""
>>
Kinda funny imagining this purely from everyone else's perspective
>You're out helping some little demon save his dad
>Sesshomaru shows up for no reason
>Refuses to help when asked
>Proceeds to help anyway
>Refuses to elaborate
>Leaves
>>
This chapter title is another proper noun. The original is 宝仙鬼 and it is written with the kanji for 'treasure', 'hermit' and 'ghost' per Furinkan and machine translation.

>>
>>274990048
Okay, I went back and double checked and Kaede is actually shown holding the black pearl after they return. So, it 'vanished' but in the same way an old set of keys 'vanishes'. Also, there is zero explanation for how they 'returned'. Same for Sesshomaru and Jaken. There is a time skip panel and then they're back in the village.

Also, it was neat to go back and look at the old designs and drawings. Inuyasha's father did have a body, but it was sort of easy to miss since the first shot is upside down and the other is zoomed in.
>>
>>274990188
So, this part is sort of a retcon unless you assume it just gradually vanished. Since again, Kaede had it after the adventure there.

>>274990051
I do remember it feeling a bit tedious after a while on my first read through (but this is only my second) but the stuff I remember as being the most tedious was the Band of Seven and we're past it and it wasn't as bad as I remembered.

Furinkan notes that: "In the flashback to when Inuyasha and Kagome visited Inuyasha's father's grave to retrieve Tessaiga we see the blade is placed in a stylized lotus flower. These are often the pedistal for statues of Buddha in Japanese artwork."

This pedestal (yeah, another Furinkan typo) was present when we originally went there in Volume 2.

Apparently, the anime had a scene of Kagome and Inuyasha coming back home from the grave and they had the black pearl go BACK into Inuyasha's eye which is certainly a choice.

They also seemed to have changed Myoga's line to saying the black pearl can't be used like that again rather than saying it is gone. But this is secondhand info. I never watched it.

Apparently, the line in the first panel caused some misunderstandings back in the day. Furinkan says: "Hosenki's son debuts in this chapter. Some foreign fans have incorrectly called him "Jumyo" (寿命) because on the panel following his introduction Inuyasha says this word followed by a question mark. This means "old age" or "life span" in other words Hosenki's son is explaining that his father died of old age. So "Jumyo" is not his name."

Whoops. I don't know how well I could've handled manga if I was into it back in the day with mistakes like this floating around.

>>
>>274990487
火の国 in Japanese. I just googled it. Furinkan understandably didn't deem it worth mentioning. It translates to 'land of fire'.

End of chapter, end of volume. Funny how battle shounen-y it feels when we get Inuyasha acting brash towards Myoga. Classic bit.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Inuyasha related. I have some stuff I'll be using to bump the thread here and there.

I will be returning Saturday to dump Volume 31.

Chokyukai (anime-only name obviously since the pig gets killed immediately in the manga) is a completely different character in the anime. He appears earlier and is a much less serious character. He isn't shown killing anyone in the anime and doesn't die. Instead his MO is brainwashing young women for his harem. He even has a whole backstory of being Zhu Bajie's descendant. The way Hakudoshi gets a naginata in the anime is completely different.

In the anime, Hakudoshi got the naginata from a completely different anime original yokai. Entei had a whole backstory of only allowing the most worthy to be his rider. Rengokuki, Entei's original rider, defeated countless other yokai to prove his strength, and he was sealed along with Entei. After getting unsealed, he even chased Kagura after she rejected his offer to make her his bride. Of course, after getting hyped up so much, you know he's going to be a jobber. Hakudoshi easily kills him and takes his naginata, and Entei chooses him as his new rider.
