I even liked that the author did not make a perfect resolution to his past problems but rather just acknowledged that it's the past and he can't let himself be shackled by it forever without any obnoxious preaching about who was at fault (otherwise it could have been as annoying and obnoxious as the gook Second Coming of Gluttony was on the issue). But that's the extent of it. Those are well earned points by the author himself, but Rudeus himself just seems like a weird creature to me and I can't think of anything I can really emphasize with him about, be it his tastes, his mindset or anything else really.

The fun factor in MT is definitely better later on than the early arcs since there's better action and better characters.Orsted Round 2 is peak MT, but Rudeus' final fight with Alek cemented MT as an actual great series in my eyes. Even though, seeing Rudeus in the spotlight and winning against a Great Power in a 1v1 like a Hero, the writing didn't end there with the MC winning but Alek's character was also given focus through the loss and at the same time, incorportating the series' main theme into it.
