Alright, it is Friday and I am gonna post the thirty-third volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>275208609

Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 33 in the 3-in-1. Bones...

and yet there is 200 more chapters of adventure
>>
>>275271379
I have two notes from Furinkan regarding this page:

"Inuyasha's father [is referred to] as the "Dog General" (犬の大将/Inu no Taisho). "Toga" (闘牙) was a name that was potentially considered for the character and was included in a trailer for the third film and the film's soundtrack. The soundtrack reference was removed before it was released."

And

"Myoga calls [the being] a "death's head" which is an accurate translation of the Japanese (髑髏/sharikoube). Death's head's are often signs of danger, warnings to stay away. They are also commonly known by their German name, Totenkopf."

Apparently, the more common word for skull is 頭蓋骨 in Japanese. These other terms presumably correspond with the use of a skull in imagery (such as a pirate flag or toxicity symbol).
>>
>>275271532
I probably posted this before, but per Furinkan, Hosenki's name (宝仙鬼) "is written with the kanji for "treasure" "hermit" and "ghost"."
>>
>>275271612
This bit about the black pearl repeated.

>>275271719
Here we get a vague image of how he looked in life. Presumably, like a older version of his son.
>>
>>275271752
Logical to me. Reminder, all this 'final shard' stuff only really works if we forget about the one that ended up in the Noh mask in Kagome's time.
>>
>>275271863
I feel like the arms are a bit goofy. And not even necessarily as tactically sound as shooting spears.

Now we have KraK to match the shape of the Japanese sound effects.

Allow me to crossthreadpost this time

You're retarded. A chapter has a set amount of pages (20 or so) in those panel you can fit many panels as your tetris skill allows it and a panel will carry info within. If you use 2 panels per page you'll have at best 40 panels with info assuming these panel have text instead of action drawnings otherwise the info is severely limited as if it wasn't already. IY having many nothing burger chapter comes from abuse of pages with 3 panels tops. And then you had all the meme name calling panels being padding, then the action panels taking up even more space that is already limited. On top of IY being about several thing unlike Bleach that also had lots of nothing burger chapters and that was mainly about action taking up page count like mad with little to none real advance. As for IY the page count could be---- nigger, ffs spreads take 2 pages and almost never have any info, just an art flexing. How the fuck you're ignorig that?!

At least Bleach was constructed to be read in volumes from volume 25 or so, IY is an adventure with action sprinkled
>>
>>275273422
Black crystals are pretty.
>>
>>275271379
And now he cares about his dad.
>>
>>275273284
it's actually a pile of his father's fur that shedded off his corpse
>>
>>275273471
Oh well.

>>275273469
It is chill. I don't mind a reaction image if it clearly isn't from the manga. I've never actually read Bleach. It never seemed to be my thing. I will say that I think most chapters being sort of low impact comes less from too many big panels and more due to how many chapters just are devoted to ultimately small things.

I still like Inuyasha despite all this.
>>
>>275273553
Least Hosenki takes some responsibility for going on the aggressive and letting himself be influenced.
>>
>>275273553
Anon was right; IY got staleish around volume 13. I noticed the excess of big panels around that time.

Bleach.... is entertaining if it clicks for you. It has an entire volume of shitposting using its running gag of "teleports behind you"
>>
>>275273578
Oh, this is the same sound effect as the one that was localized as 'wok wok wok'.
>>
>>275273694
He really did just land on a bird.

>>275273639
I obviously do enjoy some battle shonen, but the stuff people who like Bleach focus on makes Bleach seem like something that wouldn't click for me. They talk a lot about it being 'cool' and 'stylish', which is kind of whatever.

I read Inuyasha mainly for the same reasons I read other Rumic stuff, so comedy and uh, emotional moments. Drama feels a bit too strong of a word.
>>
>>275273764
He did get diamond punched. If he got pierced at all, it healed up.
>>
>>275273783
Oh, he's pulling out the red Tessaiga! Man, remember all those conversations we had about it? I honestly forgot it came up more since it really seemed like it was going to get ignored with how the initial fight after Mount Hakurei went.

I do find it funny that Naraku declared Inuyasha dead basically immediately.
>>
>>275273832
Sneeeer.
>>
Oh, that was end of chapter.

July 23rd, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What event is important to you?
A: Hanshin winning the championship."
>>
>>275273884
>>
>>275273848
Am I misremembering or didn't we already see that red Tessaiga doesn't work against this shield? Or was that just for Abi's trident shield?

Bit of a reminder.
>>
>>275273906
We need a reminder every volume, editor mandate.
>>
>>275273946
Have at you.

>>275273906
We saw it not work against Hakudoshi's shield. Some people assumed that it didn't work on Naraku's shield when we saw Inuyasha fight him after Naraku's last power up, but the way the story is going, it really seems like Inuyasha just DIDN'T use the Red Tessaiga then.

For some reason.
>>
>>275273986
He definitely did reflect it before, but again, I don't know if it was the red tessaiga. Which seems to need to be 'invoked'.
>>
>>275274009
For all the people complaining about it not showing up again, here it is.
>>
>>275272933
Now that’s what I call foreshadowing.
>>
>>275274022
Even if it doesn't work, using the Wind Scar to force Naraku to shoot demonic aura (his own) back at him so he can use Bakuryuha is big-brained.
>>
>>275274022
Look at all those.
>>
>>275273764
Don't forget the Kubo zone, IY has already a lot of that by now too
>>
>>275274054
Not fully impaled.
>>
>>275274112
Damn. Also, did Naraku daintily pick up a chunk of Hosenki and ram it into Inuyasha? Or did he throw it and then just daintily snag it after? Not sure.

Whatever. The Bakuryuha (Backlash Wave, Crushing Stream, Explosive Stream Blast, 爆流破) didn't work.
>>
>>275274206
Back to this.

Is that referring to fights seemingly happening in an empty void? I remember being surprised by how much YYH and HxH seemed to do that.

Inuyasha did get dragged/padded out to be honest, but the ol' hag locked in for the final arc which is something that can rarely be said for a long-running weekly shonen
I learned about weekly manga+pirated sites just in time to follow the development of the final arc and I had a great time
>>
>>275274317
!... again!
>>
>>275274341
This bit does feel planned. The whole gate story would otherwise feel pretty pointless. I will admit, it is funny that they just refuse to fight if they aren't completely invincible.

End of chapter. Imagine if Jaken just immediately turned to stone here.

I try to be consistent. I assume Shonen Sunday's editors are doing the same thing. I will say, the author's comments were actually more interesting when Rumiko had to struggle to think of anything to say rather than being asked a question she can safely give a non-answer to.

I like it. It definitely has its highs and lows. Read Urusei Yatsura though. It is my favorite. Or Maison Ikkoku.

Furinkan notes that: "By this point in the English adaptation from Viz attempts are being made to use the anime translations (also by Viz) in the manga. We see the Kaze no Kizu referred to as the "Wind Scar" and Naraku's insects as "Saimyosho". For whatever reason Sango's "Hiraikotsu" is still translated as "Boomerang Bone" however."

We definitely saw "Scar of the Wind" last chapter, so this note may be more applicable to the previous edition. I will say, it seems that it swaps around whenever they change translators. So, it can vary volume to volume.

Wonder if Jaken dying would've swayed Sessh to give up some tactical ground. Also, I guess it is reasonable by now that Kagome would just save Jaken out of the goodness of her heart.

I don't remember how their last interaction went, but she's quick to act in situations like this.

Original title is 金剛槍破 which is a proper noun. Sort of. Furinkan says "The kanji used is "diamond" "spear" and "tear"." Machine translation struggled with this one, giving 'Striking someone with a diamond spear' and 'Varja Spear Break' (varja apparently using the same kanji as diamond for some reason?).

Dead demons (maybe people too given all the bones we see, but I'm not sure) turn into these skeleton remnant things in this boundary between life and death. Pretty sure we don't get any more details than that. At least, pretty sure we haven't yet. I don't think we know what makes some of them animate and some inanimate. Or what happens from then on out. We saw a bit of this when Hakudoshi did his head experiment.

Hosenki died of natural causes, so any weirdness would be due to taking the shard, but I don't think any of it is really caused by it. All the diamond stuff is just how he is.

Inuyasha's got a new ability that can pierce Naraku's new shield! Surely this is the end of Naraku and he won't get away because of some bullshit!
>>
>>275275910
Furinkan notes that: "The name of this chapter is "Kongosoha," the name of the new attack Inuyasha gains. It is translated by Viz as "Diamond Spears" which is accurate. The kanji used is "diamond" "spear" and "tear". The anime will ultimately dub this attack "Adamant Barrage" in translation, though the manga wisely chose to romanize the Japanese instead of provide a translation."

I guess 'attack' is accurate enough, but it seems to be a state ala red tessaiga. Obviously, the newer edition just didn't translate it even for the chapter title. Some of the machine translation I got regarding '金剛' did give me 'varja (mythical substance)' and the Japanese wikipedia for varja does talk about it being made of 'diamond or an incredibly hard metal' so maybe adamant isn't completely insane, but Diamond Spears is much more straightforward.
>>
>>275276007
The sound effect in Japanese also had the cheesy shiny screentone on it, though maybe a little bit subtler.
>>
>>275276031
This does track with Hosenki having pierced him earlier. He seems a bit more perturbed about this though.

>>275276055
In case English's use of loan words makes the idea of Sesshomaru using French seem odd to you, the Japanese term used here was "とどを刺" which apparently just means "finishing blow".

This seems like a good time to mention Furinkan's other note from this volume regarding Sessh:
"Sesshomaru has a very unique way of speaking about himself. He often refers to himself as "This Sesshomaru" (この殺生丸/kono Sesshomaru). This is not conveyed in the English translation, but it comes off as very self-centered."

I mentioned this before, but yeah.

>>275276150
Actually, that "was it strong enough...?" is just a stupid translation. They should've gone with "was that enough?" or something. The Japanese line seemed to be more "Did he do it?" which also would've been fine.

You don't say "was it strong enough?" when it turns someone into chunks.

Original title is 帰還 which appears to just mean 'return' but may have the connotation of 'homecoming' or something.

I like when Naraku is just drawn as chunks for some reason. It isn't even gore. It is almost abstract.

Hohohoho.
>>
>>275276317
Hi again, Kohaku. I see you haven't made much headway since the memories thing.
>>
>>275276348
I guess he couldn't spare some saimyosho or Kanna to keep tabs on her this time. Though I don't know how their joint custody works. Kanna I guess is still stuck dealing with the baby. And the wasps are in the afterlife (or maybe just some?).
>>
>>275276389
>>
>>275276402
Oh hi. The arrow too.
>>
>>275276417
Oh no! Naraku escaped because of some bullshit! This is the first time this has happened and it will certainly be the last!
>>
>>275276417
The arrow seems to be doing some work.
>>
>>275276623
So, this is how his one-way back worked. Somehow. I mean, he did have Hakudoshi research all this for a reason.

>>275276448
How unlucky for our heroes!
>>
>>275276417
>>275276448
Kind of silly. I think it would have worked better if Naraku's body was actually destroyed, but he just sprouted out of Hakudoshi like a tumor instead.
>>
>>275276650
>>
>>275276666
Also, it seems like the answer to 'what will happen to Hosenki when Inuyasha cuts him and takes his demonic power' is... not much. Unless he is double-dying here, slowly. Kind of hard to tell.

>>275276664
Well, they want Inuyasha's new thing to have actually affected his plans a bit. If Naraku's escape from the underworld plan was always be destroyed with the shard and be regrown with it in his possession, that would raise some questions.
>>
>>275276732
I wonder how well Myoga's yells can travel. I don't remember if when everyone shrank due to the Peach Man's stuff if they got quieter. Obviously, Sesshomaru would ignore him regardless.
>>
>>275276775
Well, basically destroyed.
>>
>>275275391
because it's part of an asian dragon of course
>>
>Everyone is HERE
>Naraku gets BTFO
So it happened... AGAIN
>>
>>275276785
That first panel probably is going to remind you guys of some other panel from another battle shonen. Also, I guess he would've had to regrow from the other baby? Naraku is sort of lich-like in a way.

Also, the moon is in that sort of confusing state where it is rounded like a waxing crescent but is full like a waning gibbous. But given that it is more full than the half-moon we saw last time, I guess that was a first quarter rather than a third quarter after all.
>>
>>275275469

>>
>>275276732
Oh yeah, bringing the shard back.
>>
>>275276878
Furinkan notes that Hakudoshi is referring to the events of chapter 305.

>>
>>275275719
how dare you forget the dub's brilliant translation
>adamant barrage
>>
>>275276998
Probably safer this way though it would've been neat to see them scheme together. At least now Kohaku at least knows this much.
>>
>>275276732
It’s nice to see Myoga almost always addressing the brothers as Lords (-sama). He seems to be the only one among the Dog General’s servants to do so.
>>
>>275277030
From what we seen of Kikyo, it won't take much.

>>275277009
Heh, I wanted to only talk about direct translations of the chapter title so not to give away that it is a new attack. Not that it really did much good, given what the kanji mean.
>>
>>275276878
Naraku is the kind of villain to make sure that not only he keeps his heart outside of him, but also that his heart’s heart is outside of it elsewhere.
>>
>>275276998
>>275277030
Now I’m suddenly in the mood for some Kagura/Kohaku /ss/.
>>
>>275275859
>Pretty sure we don't get any more details than that. At least, pretty sure we haven't yet.
>yet
bold of you to assume rumiko thought of a reason lol
>>
The original title is 厨子鼠. This was not localized in this edition. It can be translated as 'The Shrine Rat'. Though, specifically, 厨子 is a specific type of container. Here's Furinkan's description of it: "This type of shrine, called a "zushi" is a double doored box used to store Buddhist sutras. They are not always for religious items however, wealthy people used them for storing scrolls and books and so the term "zushi" does not exclusively mean "shrine"."

Furinkan had a typo I had to fix here. The only reason I mention when they have a typo is not because I want to shame them, but because at some point, I want to collect them and email them. So I mention it so I can search for them later.

And yeah, whoops, that last page was the end of chapter.

September 3rd, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What message would you give to important people?
A: Come back soon, Hamanaka-san."

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know who she is referring to.
>>
>>275277237
Here's that zushi we were talking about. Also, we see an irori, those traditional hearths with hanging pots.
>>
>>275277349
Now we know.
>>
>>275276121
>He often refers to himself as "This Sesshomaru" (この殺生丸/kono Sesshomaru). This is not conveyed in the English translation, but it comes off as very self-centered."
I think the way to translate this that isn't retarded is
>I, (name)
I believe dio's famous line
>It was I, dio
is with kono dio in the original
>>
>>275276157
the next hundreds of chapters is slice of life and orgies!
>>
>>275277367
Goodbye.

>>275277370
They did "The Sesshomaru" once and it worked well in context, but I'll admit you can't apply it every time. I do think "I, Sesshomaru" would fine but may start sounding silly quickly. Then again, maybe that's okay.
>>
>>275276187
>You don't say "was it strong enough?" when it turns someone into chunks.
as if being turned into chunks has ever stopped naraku before lmao
>>
>>275277418
Oh hey, they just keep calling it a zushi. That's nice.
>>
>>275277451
I assume that this is the same big tree with long roots as before, but I like the idea that Inuyasha just picked a random one to check.

>>275277439
Oh, obviously, but I'm just saying it isn't about strength.
>>
>>275277496
Furinkan has two notes regarding this page:
""Feed a dog for days and it'll be loyal for three years." - This is an actual Japanese idiom. Shippo actually says, "犬は三日飼ったら恩は忘れんとか言うが" (Feed a dog for three days and he'll never forget to be grateful to his owner).

The Viz translation has Inuyasha reply "I'm not a dog." In the original he actually says "Who's owner?" (誰が飼われた。)"

Since they rewrote the idiom to be a bit less wordy, they had to change the reply. You can decide if you feel that changes it too much.
>>
>>275277525
Those top two panels are very funny just because of Kagome's expression. But yes, Inuyasha definitely does not deserve this.

I do think that the whole 'You're so understanding' bit last page was a deliberate setup for this subversion, but I know some people take it at face value and assume Rumiko actually intends for her to be flawless. I disagree.
>>
>>275277583
Gross. Also, another village stripped to the bone.
>>
>>275276121
Doesn’t Naraku do it, too, sometimes?
>>
>>275277596
A bit less gross now that they aren't just shadowy maggots, I guess.
>>
>>275277612
Hm?

>>275277599
I haven't read the Japanese version and I don't remember Furinkan mentioning it, so I can't be sure, but possibly. Maybe down the line?
>>
>>275276664
>he just sprouted out of Hakudoshi like a tumor instead.
didn't naraku do that once? not from hakudoshi, but I feel like he used that trick once
sounds like something he'd do at least

>>
>>275277724

Original title is 魔寄せ. My machine translations went with 'enchantment' and 'charm' respectively, but maybe breaking down the individual kanji gets you something like this. I tried, but when I tried to split it up, all I got was 'magic send height'.

>>
>>275277115
But can he wield the power of the keyblade?
>>
>>275274985
i think the anime depicts him flying a lot more
quite memorably the 2nd ending song has him on that cloud flying
however thinking about it, i do /not/ recall sesshomaru flying in the first fight with inuyasha... right?
>>
>>275277924
This explains how this can be a known problem without the world becoming a giant ball of rats by now.

>>275277904
Yeah, especially since it doesn't seem like a proper noun, but you can't really win with these sorts of things. I definitely prefer erring in this direction rather than having Kodoku end up being Poison Imp or whatever.
>>
>>275276933
Man, if only Naraku communicated better with Naraku, Naraku wouldn't have been caught by surprise like this. He really needs to work on his intrapersonal skills.
>>
>>275277418
kohaku using his skills for the very thing he was trained for!

>Then again, maybe that's okay.
well saying "I, (name)" is kind of silly due to the inherent arrogance of talking that way lol
>>
>>275277978
Oh, someone asked about Miroku using shields. Here ya go.

>>275277945
I double checked and he does not fly during the first fight, but the entire fight takes place inside his dad's ribcage, so it would be a bit cramped. Plus, I don't really think of Sessh as the sort of guy who would do the logical, but ultimately dishonorable strategy of just flying out of reach and pelting his opponent with ranged attacks.

Fun to see his baby face from early on.
>>
>>275278090
I assume the scroll (mifuda?) is used to keep the shield in place, not necessarily necessary to bring the shield up.

>>275278157
Oh, here they get names. Their Japanese names are 胡蝶 & 飛鳥 and apparently 胡蝶 means 'butterfly' and 飛鳥 means 'flying bird'. This is from Furinkan, but I double checked.

Furinkan also has two notes about this page:
"Kikyo requests a branch from an ogatama tree (Michelia compressa). The tree is a type of magnolia. ...
When Kikyo makes the ogatama tree grow she draws a five-pointed star on the ground. This pentagram is used in the Japanese art of onmyodo."

>>275278147
Hi! No worries. It is an odd day.

>>275278149
I probably am going to go through it and do a formal count at some point. There're honestly more successes than I remembered!
>>
>>275278250
Hm.

>>275278165
It doesn't seem like it, unless I am blind.
>>
>>275278288
Rumiko could've made them more grotesque, but I guess it isn't necessary.
>>
>>275278318
So, yeah, like the chapter title. I guess VIZ changed it because 'enchantment' or 'charm' is too generic. I assume 魔寄せ isn't a very generic term.
>>
>>275278346

meanings of "gathering, collecting, coming together" and "last moves, endgame"
it could also come from the verb 寄せる where one of the meanings includes "to close (in battle), to make an onslaught"
魔 broadly encompasses the demonic/malicious/magical
it's actually a little annoying how broad it is lmao
i guess the implication that this is *the* finishing chess move to bring kikyo out of hiding by gathering this hoard of rats to devour everything

Given how often it seems to be used, it probably is something super obvious if you read manga in Japanese a lot.

Looking at the thejadednetwork sound effects thing, the most likely candidate is ガ so, ガガガ or 'ga ga ga', which just signifies an impact. I can sort of get wdwdwd, but wok wok wok doesn't seem right.

I think I was confused because ガ looked like it had a little circle next to it on my screen.

>>
>>275278925
i think it might be because of 専用?
seems that means "exclusive use", "used only/specifically for"
so grasses that have the exclusive use (of creating the poisonous smoke that stops multiplying demon rats)? i figure the word "special" would cover that, or maybe bold the word "special" instead? but then i guess 専用 modifies the word (medicinal) grass rather than grass modifying it? hmm...
>>
>>275278925
also i got ahead of myself
kikyo was the one creating a tree to gather the rats rather than naraku doing the gathering
but yes 魔 (ma) in this case was for demons
i am still annoyed how that kanji is broadly used in words encompassing innocent magical things like enchantments, generic magic (MAhou), witches (MAjo), to demons/devils (MAjin/akuMA), to straight up satan (MAou!)
