>>20989435Smooth is an attribute of flavor, I'd say. Smooth means a consistency in taste, richness, and acidity, at least to me.
>>20989359It's literally not -just- Typica, the Volcanic Soil and elevation affect the flavor profile and consistency of the coffee. I am SO bummed that PNG being "like Blue Mountain" just meant "Blue Mountain if someone cut out the richness and half the flavor." Don't know where to go from here in my quest to find an affordable replacement for JBM - maybe I'll just have to accept that I've reached peak coffee and find a good affordable silver medalist to use regularly and save JBM for special occasions

Are there any qualities of coffee beans which tend to make some varieties more difficult to grind than others? Maybe I'm imagining it, but I feel like my nice Colombian beans are harder to grind than the cheap beans I was using before.
Are you partaking in Hoffmann's Decaff coffee tasting?
>>20989766The coffee process and especially the roast level can affect the bean's density, making some coffee harder/easier to grind. Darker roasted coffee tends to be less dense and more porous making it easier to grind.
>>20988216>straight handle
>>20989766>>20989773Altitude. Higher altitude= slower growing, denser cherries and seeds=more complex flavor. The cheap beans were probably lowland brazilian commodity.
>>20989787Prolly.
>>20988457>best material for the Kalita Wave for someone who wants minimal fussGet the standard steel model. Every other material (besides plastic) is going to require more preheating and more attention to thermal management.
>>20989787>>20989766also bean size can affect grind time/effort to grind.(depending on the burrs of course)like on my rok, small beans are harder to grind than large beans.for example, i find peaberries harder to grind.
>>20989820The worst one according to the Assman.
>>20989825Yeah. Peaberries are denser.https://perfectdailygrind.com/2020/03/what-are-peaberry-coffee-beans-the-myths-the-reality/
>>20989854sure but more peaberries can fit into the burrs than normal beans. so the amount of material between the burrs is higher making it harder the turn.regardless of the density.
>>20989842The drain/clog issue can be fixed with some simple mods. The most common involve widening the holes a little bit, or pressfitting a mesh in the bottom.
>>20989908>minimal fuss>buy the one you need power tools and chicken wire to make work
>>20989530Well what's your favorite adventurous coffee, Mr. Lives On The Edge
I see a lot of people posting about coffee preparation methods over the specific beans they use. In my experience a subpar prep won't ruin a good bean but a subpar bean will ruin a perfect prep.
>>20989957I'd say a one-time mod is better than fussing over temperature management every time you use it. Besides that, the other materials will break if you ever drop them.

New bins and new annual free cuppa brohs, bourbon, caturra, typica peruvian 48h breathless georgies pre wash.>This microlot is produced by Ismeria Leon on its Queromarca farm at an altitude of 2,250 metres, making it ideal for the production of speciality coffee with its abundant sunshine and cool temperatures. This washed batch undergoes 48 hours of extended anaerobic fermentation before washing. This coffee is fruity with notes of oranges and grapes and a juicy texture that sets it apart from traditional Peruvian coffees. With our medium roast, enjoy it as an espresso. They sell them as light roast and medium roast, naturally i got the medium roast.Beans have the typical anaerobic smell with fruitiness similar to the burundi from utopia roaster(was also an anaerobic). Taste is fruity and funky has no notes that you find in peruvian coffees, like the terroir doesn't express itself. Medium syrupy, medium lingering aftertaste. It's tasty but exhausting on the palate, only one cuppa per day type of coffee and in the afternoon i can't see myself drinking this first thing in the morning. I expect the taste to zig, but it zags instead.I like this years saucer design but the cuppa's colours don't vibe with the saucer imo. Still pretty comf and free so won't complain.Enjoy your day and coffee bros.

>>20989489>It's literally not -just- Typicaanon is right, but it has more to do with the plant's genetics rather than terroir. unless you're planting clones, each coffee plant is slightly different even if they're the same variety and even if they're propagated from the same parent planets. as an example, this pic is of a hawaiian typica that the producer told me was one of two selected for further propagation due to it's higher resistance to leaf rust compared to all the other typica on the farm. over time, with each generation of plants these slight differences build and create a unique sub-variety that retains most of the variety's characteristics or a new variety entirely.so unless new genetics are introduced, the coffee will continuously develop a unique profile. one issue, however, is resistance to new disease/fungus/pests is uncertain and can greatly impact production if the plants are not tolerant. that's why producers put massive effort into breeding programs to ensure they're able to maintain production while not sacrificing cup quality.

Why nobody warned me that filter coffee is good and not a lebbit meme?
Look at that, I’m already planning this year’s Christmas liquor.Filter goff liquor instead of moka pot goff liquor, less deep flavour but more floreal and delicate, with infused shit like fennel seeds and cinnamon sticks.I’m so (partially) back bros.
I think I made my choice either gonna cop a select or optio, simply for the lower flow rate reallyoptio is 80€ more than a select from amazonbonus is I can just walk outside and buy it instantlyTO BE CONTINUED

“Espresso blend” from a local roaster haha
just had an sumatra affogatoit was pretty good:)
>>20992984Looks like a normal espresso roast to me. They know few espresso machines have any real temp control, so they roast darker to ensure extraction even with suboptimal water temps and suboptimal extraction times. They also know it will be drowned in steamed milk, so a darker espresso is going to cut through the milk better. Customers will associate a heavier, darker flavor in their latte as being better because the average coffee drinker doesn’t know what good coffee actually tastes like.

I'm considering getting a proper coffee machine. I'm a euro and my budget is around 500€. I don't want or need a hobby regarding coffee, I really just want an easy way to make a decently tasty coffee each day, preferably without being able to fuck it up. Right now I'm using pre-ground coffee and an aeropress (french press for guests) but half the days I get a refrigerated coffee milk cup at a supermarket, so realistically I'm pretty close to rock bottom in terms of quality, so almost anything will feel like an improvement. I've considered bean to cup machines, but then the ninja luxe caught my eye, because it promises to prevent you from making shit-ass coffee and making the whole process easy (which is what I want) for 450€ (or 550€ for the 601).So three questions:>See picrel, I've color coded the features, green is something I'd use a lot, red is something I don't care about, yellow is a nice to have but not necessary. How important are single espressos? My understanding is that if I order an espresso in a cafe it's actually a double espresso usually.>Is cold-pressed coffee a meme or is there some merit to it? I don't like coldbrew all that much, so I'm wondering>Am I a retard (in regards to the machine, not in general) and should instead get another bean to cup machine and if so, which one? (keep in mind euro pricing). The only reason I'm considering the ninja despite not being bean to cup is because it automates almost everything (grind size, weighing the amount, etc).Other options include the phillips 2300 (380€), phillips 3300 (450€), Melitta Latticia OT F300 (500€) and De'Longhi Magnifica Start ECAM222.60.BG (360€). Bonus points if the machine doesn't look utter ass.
>>20993168https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkfXNE3mkXA
My aiden stopped allowing water in from the tank. It's being sent back and I'm getting a replacement. It's over. Moccamaster (not the ones with burners) won. I consneed.
>>20993177Yeah I watched that. Bad filter coffee is a fair criticism, but then I suppose it doesn't matter as much if I mostly want to make espresso/espresso based drinks. The whole idea of the machine making it so I don't have to pick up espresso as a hobby just sounds very appealing to me.
>>20993179Did you try giving it heart eyes?
>>20993168>let me guess, you need more?>>20993179>(not the ones with burners)cope, burners are the same as thermals with the upside of being easier to clean, a thermal pot literally costs 5€ for when you need itand less obstructionSelect/Optio-bros, we won>aidenthat bbc brewer literally had a fundamental flaw, which is, the cone filters it uses by default is the 1x2 not enough for 8-10 cups, the large filter is flatbottom circular filters, not commonly found in stores for eurocucksthis brewer was doomed from the start, it won't win tractionI literally could tell them this in product design ages agoI guess they don't want the eurocuck market, bbc is an american thing after allanyways
>>20993219>let me guess, you need more?Filtercoffee is nice, but I prefer espresso and espresso based coffees (or similar stuff). The closest in that regard is a mocca but that requries heating it up on the stove, cleanup etc.
>>20993180You won't find a "good" bean to cup machine for <$500 new. If you're willing to look in the used market, consider a Barista Express or local equivalent. However, if you want espresso/espresso based drinks and you don't want to faff just get a moka pot, decent grinder, and a milk steamer. Super simple and it shouldn't run you more than $200. At the very least, it will allow you to explore your tastes and decide if you have the time/interest in getting more autistic about it.
>>20993229I'm aware of that to some extent. I'll look up a Barista Express, but fundamentally the issue is what you are suggesting is basically to get into the hobby and I already looked into it and decided I didn't need another hobby. I don't need "good" coffee, I need a way to make an acceptable cup by my standards with minimum effort/skill requirement. A bean to cup machine is perfect for that. Granted the ninja is not bean to cup, but the barista assist stuff should make it so I don't have to learn espresso, so it should be acceptable.
>>20993257Have you considered just getting a grinder, good beans and using the AP you already have?>I don't want or need a hobby regarding coffee, I really just want an easy way to make a decently tasty coffee each day, preferably without being able to fuck it up.This is like ideal scenario for the AP.
>>20993277Kinda, but while the workflow for the AP is already pretty nice (I really like how easy it is to clean and who easy the used grounds pop out), I do prefer the kind of velvety mouthfeel of an espresso (I don't really have the vocabulary to explain it, sorry) and I still have to manually boil water, measure out the ingredients and then stand there with a timer. Granted that's the time to boil + 3 minutes + cleanup time, so it's not long, but I find the idea of pressing a button and being done with it (or in the case of the ninja pressing two buttons and moving the portafilter-esque thingy to the grouphead) pretty appealing.
>>20993284I'm just looking at the features you value in the ninjas. Aeropress already lets you approximate filter, single shots and americanos, does cold brew and cold press, and it doesn't seem like you give a fuck about milk. But you already have a French press to froth up some (hot or cold) when you want. I think you're looking at wasting some money. 500 eurokeks would go a long way into a grinder kettle and scale and will give you much tastier coffee.
My friend is bringing over "the best coffee in the world" that he claims "blows Jamaican Blue Mountain out of the water" but he refuses to tell me what type of coffee it is. Warmly waiting for him to come and will report on if he succeeded or not
>>20992465Comfy set up, you grow any other stuff?
>>20993309its PNG.
>>20991669Mine comes in 1-3 days, kinda hoping it's not the GOAT since 80 bucks a lb is a lot of money...
>>20993295>and it doesn't seem like you give a fuck about milk.I have one of those electric frothers for 15 bucks that automatically makes a okay-ish milk foam. You may notice a pattern in that I prefer the ease of use of that over the manual method in a french press. >500 eurokeks would go a long way into a grinder kettle and scale and will give you much tastier coffee. The issue is that what you are offering me is a great solution to someone who likes having a ritual each morning where they make coffee in a minful manner and can perfect their technique by changing each variable. That's totally cool as a hobby, but it's not what I'm after. It's a bit like if I said I wanted a lightweight tablet so I can take notes on the go and you'd suggest that rather than me getting a cheap android tablet I'd get some arm based librebooted machine and run gentoo on it. Is it technically better, a lot more customizable and more cost effective? Probably. But it's not what I am looking for. That being said I do really appreciate your advice. The ninjas are sold out right now anyways and I haven't properly looked at the different bean to cup machines, so I'll reasses if I can't be happy with the AP assuming a good electric grinder.
>>20993351I'd say it's closer to you wanting a 9in chinese android tablet without access to the play store when you already have a 'flagship' 7in android phone that works fine, you're just too lazy to find a decent note taking app. Its a solution seeking a problem, but its your money at the end of the day. >perfect their technique by changing each variable. You understand you don't have to autistically fiddle with a dial daily just because it exists right? You're wanting the ritual of watching and waiting for something else to automagically do the work for you. I'm saying buy a grinder, toss a scoop of beans into it and flip a switch. It's probably going to be better than what a ninja arbitrarily spits out. And if it's not you've got all the range in the world to tweak.
>>20993351What we're saying is that spending $$$ on a cheap version of a nice thing is usually not worth it, and that instead you should spend the same amount on a nice version of a simple thing. Products in the former camp will usually involve compromises in QC, capability, or convenience that will cause a headache down the line. It seems like you're OK with this. For maximum easy maybe you should consider "premium" coffee concentrates that you dissolve in boiling water.
>>20993408>>20993378I guess I'm partially to blame, because by asking in a coffee thread I am asking people who are enthusiastic about coffee, but is it not valid to prioritize convenience over quality? I used the technology analogy earlier because that's an area where I am on the other end of the spectrum. I'm running pretty customized arch and have my development environment just the way I want it, but if my mother asks me to help her setup her computer, I'll install windows and firefox on it and that's it. The core issue is that you guys are optimizing for the best possible final cup with your money, which is totally valid, but that's for hobbyists and enthusiasts. I'm trying to optimize for a decent cup with the least amount of hassle involved. If I could just magically have a cup of coffee appear each morning in my kitchen that tasted somewhat better than the supermarket slop I usually buy (and had less sugar in it) I'd be happy with that. The issue is that all the options you guys are offering are all to make it a ritual each morning, and I don't want or need that in my life right now.I actually considered coffee concentrates and even the nespresso pods because they are certainly convenient, but they are pretty expensive over time and I don't like the whole environmental aspect of them much. Then again, with most bean to cup machines in that price bracket you only get a 2 year warranty too, and if those break it's a shitton of e-waste too (most don't look particularly repairable).
>>20993351>I have one of those electric frothers for $15 No you don't. You have a wisk. Unless you got a nanofoamer 2nd hand cause they don't cost $15 and nothing else creates nanofoam.>I don't want a hobbyThen buy coffee at a Cafe. If all you want to do is press a button then you're not getting better coffee. If you can put in a modicum of effort then the Oracle touch was made for you. It's also expensive but thems the breaks in the coffee market.
>>20993445>No you don't. You have a wisk. A whisk implies the handheld ones, I mean the ones that are one countertop unit so you don't have to do anything while they do their thing. "Milk frother" is a pretty generic term for that whole category of devices, noone talked about nanofoam.>>20993445>Then buy coffee at a Cafe.Sure anon, that sounds like exactly what I need, an additional step in my commute each day and waiting until it's my turn. What's not to love.>If all you want to do is press a button then you're not getting better coffee.I don't know how many ways I can say I don't want "better coffee" in a global sense, I want "better coffee" compared to the shit sold refrigerated in supermarkets. I don't think you anons understand the desire to not want an additional hobby or be giga autistic about your favorite subject matter, but again, that's my mistake for asking in a thread filled with enthusiasts.
>>20993456And I literally answered your question. The Orcale touch is made for you. Can't afford it too bad.
>>20993435Just buy a grinder and an Aeropress if you want convenient decent coffee. It's the path I chose, and it's both allowed me to have coffee that's better than a chain and within spitting distance of quality compared to a coffee shop, and saved me a ton of money.
>>20993456Get the Ninja Luxe Cafe
>>20993435>running pretty customized arch>trying to optimize for a decent cup with the least amount of hassle involvedYou know how "smart" devices tend to be way more hassle than they're worth? We're trying to avoid that scenario for you. You're going to drop $500 and be perturbed by the inherent limitations. You're essentially wanting to buy a shitty brewer and even shittier grinder, with a shitty basic algorithm to adjust things for you. I'm telling you get a decent grinder, use the decent brewer you already own, and become that shitty algorithm. Noone is telling you to keep a journal of all your brew variables. Going from preground to fresh ground (or just "make" your own preground weekly) in an aeropress is going to yield a much better experience. But its your money.
>>20993456 Bottom line is this. For 500 reichshekels you're not going to find something that has makes "good" coffee from self-supplied beans at the push of a button without ANY kind of setup/cleanup afterwards. I find it hard to believe that you can't spare the 30 seconds that it takes to clean out an Aeropress. At this rate you should buy a supply of ice cream cones so you don't have to wash your cup afterwards. Want supermarket tier coffee with supermarket level convenience? Get a pod machine or deal with concentrates. Want something better that requires no effort on your end? Get a nice ($2000+) superauto with lavazza dark roast on auto-delivery. It's what I got my parents when they asked for something to make morning espresso with minimum effort.
>>20993487>You know how "smart" devices tend to be way more hassle than they're worth?I know what you are trying to get at with the analogy, but smart devices are only more hassle than they're worth if you try to leave the ecosystem and do something with them that they weren't intended for.For me who may want to automate stuff with home assistant and make sure it all runs locally and I have maximum control over the PID values within my smart thermostat, a cheap smart device is shit. But for a friend who just wants a smart thermostat where he opens an app, selects a temperature and is done with it, it'll work just fine. But this specific metaphor aside, I do get what you are trying to say.>>20993491>Bottom line is this. For 500 reichshekels you're not going to find something that has makes "good" coffee from self-supplied beans at the push of a button without ANY kind of setup/cleanup afterwards. The issue is that friends with cheap-ish bean to cup machines make coffee that I consider adequate, so the whole idea that I have to pay 2k for decent coffee (by my standards) is just not true. I get that it's sub-par for a connoisseur, but I am not one and don't intend to become one. I'd probably be happy with the phillips 3300 too and I was just wondering if the ninja or other alternatives would be better. That's pretty much cleanup free, other than emptying the drip tray and running some descaler once a month through it. >>20993481Well it's not in stock right now, but I'm still considering it. Maybe until it gets in stock I get a chance to see one in person and not just online.>>20993476That's gonna be my fallback if I decide not to get a bean to cup machine.
>>20993502Best of luck. I hope you think about this exchange next time you try to convince your friends to not lust after shiny "convenient" plastic when way better options exist.
>>20993509>Best of luck. Thanks anon. I know you are being sarcastic, but I do genuinely appreciate all of you anons trying to give advice, even if ultimately the things you value and the advice you are giving me doesn't fit what I am looking for. I know it's coming from a good place in the end.
>>20993502 It seems like you know what you're looking for. If you're totally intransigent on your desires/restrictions, probably any machine you consider will give you a comparable experience.
