It was supposed to be originally just adding in background details that hinted at a more epic, dark, or age inappropriate details/setting then would be shown in the show like Ooo being post-apocalyptic Earth but only hinted at in background easter eggs or offhand mentions. Instead "lore" turned into female drama, therapy speak, and lesbians.
