I get that they wanted to pull off that "formidable and intimidating starter villain is also goofy and has a tragic past" trope but it failed to make me feel anything because we barely knew anything about the Perm Gang besides them being one-dimensional bullies for most of their screentime, the lighting fast way this "development" unfolds, and the fact that the rest of his gang are rather lame-looking and have too similar personalities. Character arcs like these need a few seasons to develop, not to be rushed in the first one and expecting us to ugly cry to it like people claim they did for Steven Universe.
