BASED thread.

Why does this thread hate bittercel so much? He is unironically the best poster we have ever had. Here's my reasons:

bittercel is always brutally honest. He is like water, he will find a crack in your watch and pour in from there. He is the criticism we need. You never get that in watchuseek or reddit, you only get an echo chamber of “nice watch, wear it in good health, champ” bullshit. Not with bittercel, he does not care for your feelings which is why he will tell you the truth. Yes, your watch is too big for you, yes it’s a shitter, yes the lugs look like shit, yes the movement is crap. You, as a critically thinking individual, should embrace this.

We are all protected by anonymity here which is the point of this site. Avatarfags are pathetic going against this. Take reversocel for example; he couldn’t handle a bit of heat from bittercel and immediately fucked off to r/watches as soon as someone wasn’t sucking his cock over his shitters and pens lmfao.

Yes, bittercel may seem bitter at first, but he is the counter force to all this circle-jerking in here. He is harsh but fair. You hold the fact he never posts a watch against him, but that is merely him not taking a side. He is not a brain-dead fanboy to brands (other than Rolex, but Rolex is Rolex). This way he maintains his unbiased position.

And the best part of bittercel? He is always there for you, right here, in this thread.

>>
>>18170117
This specific model was produced from the early 90s to mid 00s.
>>
>>18170109
It's very strange, 44 hours without wearing it, but the watch has about 70 hours of power reserve. On other occasions I haven't worn it for almost three days and it has never stopped. I set the watch every month, last month: -12 seconds in 30 days, which I think is great for a mechanical watch.
I am very concerned about Rolex's problems with the new movement.
>>
>>18170128

Just because you've been wearing it a full day doesn't mean the power reserve was full when you took it off your wrist.

I get that. Looks like you could sell one for about $300 these days? That's a small enough amount that I'd think I might as well just keep it.
>>
>>18171425
Yeah, the prices on them jumped quite a bit when they were discontinued and the second gen didn't look as good.

For me, I initially bought it as a cope Doxa SUB Professional and I felt the lack of hand-winding was a pain in the ass. In hindsight, though, it had its own charms I overlooked, like its brutal simplicity and thermonuclear lume.

I did eventually get my Doxa but I think the Doxa and the Monster could have coexisted in a collection.

I doubt I'd go for another one at this point, since I'm at the point now where I want my collection to be as small/efficient as possible. (i.e. Dress/Daily/Weekend)

Because they don't want any criticism at all. They just shelled out a bunch of money on a watch. They don't want some random jerk online pointing out the watch's flaws. They don't even want anyone saying that it's not their cup of tea.
To the watch poster it translates to "You wasted your money."

holy shitter!!! for rubber straps you can just run them under water and clean with any sort of soap. Just take them off the watch if your watch is not water resistant.

Anything up to 42mm, according to Tim Mosso!
But seriously, a few ideas:

>Think "Mad Men." Look into vintage or retro pieces. In the mid 20th century, 35-36mm was normal. That's a good era for a narrow wrist.

>Try rectangular rather than round dials. This might allow you to get more watch on your wrist without overhang.

>>
>>18171609
I think there are three major reasons.
The first is that style has changed such that men are wearing long sleeve shirts and jackets less frequently, so the importance of being able to pass under a shirt sleeve easily is minimal. This is also why many brands have moved their date windows from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock, because so many more dudes are manchildren that wear printed tees to work there's less need to have the date easily peek out from under a shirt sleeve, so there's been a move to more emphasize symmetry.
The second is that watches used ro be relatively very expensive, so the appeal of having one watch that would work well both for casual wear and for those formal shirt and tie occasions was high.
The third is that now that watches have become much more jewelry than practical devices they've become larger to grab more attention. What's the point of wearing a watch if everyone in the room can't see you're wearing a watch? If your watch doesn't take up your entire wrist are you even trying to be noticed? Watches have become gaudy displays to peacock with.
>>
>>18171618
>The third is that now that watches have become much more jewelry than practical devices they've become larger to grab more attention
This is the only reason.

Opinions on the Oris Sixty Five? I never see these mentioned here - is it because the price/quality ratio is not good? Style wise they look great and they are available in 36 and 40mm.
>>
>>18171619
I don't think you get the wave of big watches we've had since rhe 80s without all 3 of those factors in play. If everyone still wore sleeves thin little watches would still be appealing. Quartz watches and smart phones making timekeeping cheap and easy wouldn't make small watches any less appealing. If anything quartz encourages making watches smaller, casio makes $20 watches that are 33mm across and 8mm thick that are perpetual calendar chronograph hourly chiming alarm clocks. Making that same quartz watch bigger doesn't make ir any more impressive or expensive, and money couldn't buy a mechanical watch like that.

All of these things economic, social, and psychological have lead to this. It's a perfect storm of technology, bad taste and retardation converging.

seiko 5 question - - is there custom 18mm end links which can be used with those ''tin'' bracelets ?

see pic, see how the last links are wider and go into the lugs. this can make dents in the front of the lugs (side u see in pic).
the bracelet itself is comfortable to wear and surprisingly doesn't pull hair but that denting shit prevents me from wearing it. i already had the watch on leather strap but dislike how unnatural it sits on the wris.

>What companies are known for the brightest, longest lasting lume?
Panerai lume is always great, as are Seiko divers.
Old Omega (from the late 90s through the 2000s) lume was really good too. When they switched to blue, it became longer lasting, but not as bright.

The solid blocks of lume that Tudor uses in the Black Bay Pro can be seen in broad daylight. Too bad the rest of the watch is kind of shit. (If they give it the updated movement from the BB58 GMT, though, all will be forgiven)
>>
>>18171865
I never know where to count tritium tubes, like Ball's. They're bright when new and never go out, but they do grow dimmer over the years and, when they're dead, they're dead.

Compounds like Super Luminova need to be recharged with sunlight but will always glow as brightly as when new.

>What's the best modern manual wind dress watch (no date) under 2k?
Timex Marlin for around 200 dollars
Nomos Tangente 101 for around 1500 dollars (gray)

Not really a lot out there anymore.

The better bet for a dress watch is to go vintage. It will take a lot more patience to find the best piece for the money, but you can get much, much higher quality watchmaking. Dress watches just aren't that popular, so prices are always low. At that range, solid gold cases are already a possibility

In terms of durability or accuracy, that's not really something that should be a major concern, since it's a dress watch. You're not going to wear it that often and you're not going to be swimming or mountain climbing in it.

wtf is a quartz chronometer?
>>
>>18171891
Imagine being so poor that you wear old clothes lmfao???
>>
>>18171905
It's a quartz movement that has been certified by some metrology bureau (e.g. COSC) as being accurate enough to use as a chronometer.

Chronometer standards for quartz are different than they are for mechanical. Obviously, quartz has to be more accurate, +/- 10 seconds per year, but also has to work at a wider range of temperatures, since normal quartz movements speed up or slow down as the temperature fluctuates. Quartz chronometer movements will usually be described as thermocompensated, meaning the movement has a mechanism to determine the temperature and adjust itself accordingly.

Regular lume will probably wear out as much as tritium in 20-30 years.
>>
>>18171945
>Regular lume will probably wear out as much as tritium in 20-30 years.

No. Strontium aluminate based lume (Super-LumiNova) does not wear out in the same way as tritium. They operate under different chemical properties. With normal usage, it should basically never wear out.

What happens is that UV radiation excites electrons into a higher energetic state and then begin emitting light. Once the excess energy is bled off, the electrons fall back into their normal state.

With tritium lume, there are two components: the tritium (a hydrogen isotope), which is constantly beta particles (fast electrons) and those electrons excite a phosphorescent material. However, once the tritium has emitted all its extra electrons, it's just hydrogen. To get it to glow again, you have to add more tritium to the mix.

Now, when Super-LumiNova is exposed to strong radiation for 1000 hours straight, the manufacturer has noticed that the strength of the brightness and duration will have decreased from new, but that effect has not been observed in rotating periods of light and darkness.

what are the two bezels rolex has, fluted and what is it called when it is not fluted, ie smooth?

If you get a fluted bezel you should get a jubilee bracelet, and if you get a smooth bezel you should get the oyster bracelet, correct? or can you mix it (or will it look silly?)
>>
>>18171982
The non-fluted bezels are typically called smooth or domed. (They both exist and are actually slightly different, but 99% of the time, you can use them interchangeably and people will know what you're talking about.)

And yes, you have it correct: fluted + Jubilee, smooth + Oyster.
You can mix it up if you think it looks good, but most people prefer the traditional combos.

You're overlooking the subjectivity of personal opinion, though. Only autists buy purely based on spec sheets.
If you don't like the Tudor and you do like the Longines then the Tudor's not a realistic option.

Also, the Zulu is CONSIDERABLY cheaper than the Tudor BB58 GMT, since the gray market price for the Zulu is about 2,2k USD.

However, I do agree, though, that the extra thousand or so premium that the Tudor commands is worth it in terms of overall package.

Probably the best watch if you have an above average wrist is their Ultrachron, but I would get the Legend diver or some sector dial.

>>18172027
I spent a lot of time deciding my first expensive watch, in the end there was two watches, Longines legend diver and Black bay 58. I really liked the legend diver, but it was very expensive, the movement was a modified workhorse movement, but that was kinda ok, the bad thing is that it was rather shiny and the bracelet looked rather cheap, the worst being that the strap version price was almost the same as with bracelet and only came in one colour. So just 400eur more and I could get a black bay 58 a really solid diver, better finished but less fancy looking (Legend diver had some lacquer and shine) as most of it is brushed and the bezel is made from aluminium, something I really like, and the bracelet, was really ahead of the Longines one.

But in case BB58GMT VS Longines GMT I would get Longines Hidro GMT or Zulu, even if they are marginally worse, they are better looking in my opinion, they are very nice looking and come in different colours.

The practice came about during WWI: remembering comments by first sea lord Admiral Sir Arthur Wilson, who complained that submarines were "underhanded, unfair, and damned un-English" and that personnel should be hanged as pirates.
>Lieutenant Commander Max Horton began flying the flag after returning from successful patrols. Initially, Horton's submarine HMS E9 flew an additional flag after each successful patrol, but when there was no room for more, the practice was changed to a single large flag, onto which symbols indicating the submarine's achievements were sewn.

Difference is that Longines is a literary who shitter while Rolex is the only watch that matters. A Rolex could be gaining 30 mins a day and it would still be the best watch.

>plastic toy
It's a superior watch to a Rolex in every way, except as jewellery or a status symbol. The g-shock is the serious watch, the Rolex is the toy.

>Rolex is accurate and mechanical, which is very hard
The Longines posted earlier is as accurate, and costs much less.

>i do think rolex is ridiculously overpriced.
Yes.

It is also very ugly.

Well how else do stand out in a room full of millionaires? Nobody's gonna look at your Patek, but if you smear yourself with dog shit, yes.

After doing some research, it turns out there are vintage Seikos with this exact same color combo. Will try and track down one of those.

People who are insecure about their status do.

Guys, Bill Gates wears a $40 Casio Duro, so there's no point in spending more than that on a watch

Do you prefer Omega Aqua Terra or Rolex Datejust?

Still enjoying this Farer.

>Do you prefer Omega Aqua Terra or Rolex Datejust?
Datejust.
It's not really a fair comparison, since the AT is like half the price.

Someone explain why Casio hasn't made a 5600/5000 series square gshock with a MIP display.
>>
>>18172487
Check out the DW-H5600.
>>
>>18172496
It has all the fitness and exercise junk on it, including the sensors that stick out on the caseback. Why does casio feel that MIP has to be paired with exercise functions? I wonder if it's too energy hungry and that consumers will only recharge a watch regularly if it has some sort of smart watch like capabilities. I could be completely wrong though..

I think part of their business model is hyping people up for drops of limited editions. This one was just released in the us https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.DW-5600EP-2/
