Budget: $500
Type: dress
Movement: I’d prefer an automatic, but I‘m open to quartz
Features: an attractive dial and perhaps a day/date
Strap: ideally usable with both a bracelet and a leather strap, but I’d settle for just a leather strap
Wrist size: 6.75

I’m currently leaning towards this Seiko Cocktail Time.

The creators of /wt/ are very.. let's say, "special". They cannot understand sticking around in a thread past the bump limit on a slow moving board, even though I've tried to explain it to them. Literally every other general on the site does this, yet /wt/ cannot figure it out. One guy in particular goes "NEW THREAD???" as soon as the thread hits bump limit even though it's on page 1.

My rolex AD are fucking assholes that will probably never sell me a watch if I'm being honest, but in order to go around them I'd have to go to a boutique that sells used watches almost 2 hours away. And yeaj, on the watch itself I'd probably end up saving a little money, and might arguably even get a better watch, but the used watches are so goddamn far away I can't just pop in and browse what they have whenever. It'd be so much easier if my local dealer 15 minutes from my house with an in store watchmaker and the whole 9 wasn't a bunch of shit bags that want to get me to buy a couple frederique constants and orises before they'll allow me the HONOR of buying a datejust or explorer for retail price.

>>
>>18172852
Do people notice and/or talk to you about your watches?
>>
>>18172858
Sooner or later most people eventually notice I'm wearing a different watch every day. Some comment on the style, or the material/color of the strap but that's it. And it's the way I prefer it. Very few, however, had recognized a specific watch/brand, like the Lange, the AP, the Speedmaster or the Breguet. When this happens, we end up talking a bit more about watches, but I always try to evade the topic of the amount of money they cost.

And yes, four of five times it's a man that notices, women tend to pay attention in other things, like ties, shoes, jackets, even pens, etc...

What are yoi talking about specifically, are you talking about the vintage submariners that were made to be black but who's dials due to age and defects in the manufacturing process have discolored to purple? Those are known and very desirable to collectors, there are some daydates that had champagne colored dials that have faded to purple as well, but to my knowledge they never actually manufactured purple subs.

Omega has been shitting out Seamaster 300 and Speedmaster for decades now and the demand is still high. That means low manufacturing costs and fat margins on these models.

Omega also belongs to the Swatch Group, which is the mother company of niche brands like Blancpain, Breguet, Glashutte Original, etc. There's a high probability these brands are unprofitable.

tl;dr: Omega is the milk cow of the Swatch Group and the reason why Breguet is still in business.

>i cant imagine a single outfit where doc martens and a fancy watch work well together
Rolex, IWC, Panerai, Breitling, can't imagine a watch that wouldn't work with them if it was any kind of a "tool" watch.
>>
>>18173281
made in england docs suck too
the only real upside of docs is that they are lightweight shoes that work well for everyday tasks, but it also means they wear down incredibly quick
a premium lightweight shoe that wears down quick sounds like it should be easy to repair and maintain, and thats when you get to the heat welding meme
look
if you can spend 5k on a watch, maybe just make sure the rest of your wardrobe is up to par
some watch fags dont like to hear it, but getting an expensive watch wont make up for an otherwise low quality outfit
>>
>>18173286
Alright but here's the deal, I like my Docs and I'm gonna keep wearing them. M'kay? Thanks. Also, I'd be very interested in what you think to be an expensive shoe if MIE Docs are cheap. What the fuck do you wear (in similar, military boot style)? I have expensive shoes for the office but I'm not gonna walk around the city in $1000 shoes for the office and suit. They're perfect for city streets and more casual rock style.
Btw, if you use conditioning cream + mirror polish (I have both from Saphir) that makes them look much much better, almost elegant. And last much longer.

>>
Why do people keep buying watches? You only need two, a dress watch and a casual watch.
>>
>>18173298
Hey, that's just, your opinion, man.
>>
>>18173298
Incorrect.
You need 2 beaters, one for gym and heavy duty beater shit and other for doing yardwork etc.
A diver because muh ISO certified diver, this one you take out to the beach once per year.
Then 2 - 3 casual watches of your choosing, one with leather strap and other with bracelet.
A mechanical chrono for timing shit and for the tactile feel, this way you appreciate horology. A quartz chrono for actually timing shit (this one should be your beater Casio).
Two dress watches, one solid yellow gold and other white gold (or steel if you're poor) for variety, both mechanical. Then you need a HAQ quartz if one of your daily watches isn't that. Then you need one or true fun watches, weird colors and funky designs approved. At least one vintage, a jump hour rectangular one for example. Lastly you should have your achieved grail like a Lange 1 or something.

If you have all these you unlock the exit-game in where you sell all of your watches except one of your dailies and make a borderline spiritual post on WUS of your journey.

>>18173246
The finish on the metal surfaces is low effort polish and brushing juxtaposed with relatively overdone geometric complexity in the case and bracelet and indexes. The dials are poorly finished and look cheap on most of the colors, like san martin sunburst dials. They use terrible butterfly clasps(except for the latest black dial releases, I guess they came up with a new clasp design that's pretty decent.) the hands are ugly and stupid, the minute hand has a big arrow on it as if to point to a reading on a dive time bezel that isn't there. It's a strange design.

There's also the other issue that like we said is rampant at omega, which is that there are just too many models and too many sizes and too many weird variations between them. They make aquaterras in 28mm, 34mm, 38mm and 41mm. Isn't that kind of a weird spread? Why would you go from miniscule, to two sizes so close and yet still clearly on opposite ends of the masculine-femanine wrist spectrum, to a 4th retardedly huge size that yoi could have just bought a seamaster 300 instead? Actually, omega doesn't even seem to agree that 38mm is a mens size because they make 38mm models that are clearly intended for women. Why not just do something like 32mm, 36mm, 39mm? Then you have obviously for women and gays models, switch hitter models where we can put a lot of variety of we want to, and bigger masculine models, so then we cut can the total number of models but the collection is streamlined and doesn't cut into any other collections.

All you need is a beater, a daily, and one or two for special occasions.
>>
>>18173307
I'm not even especially picky or going after anything as hype as a submariner. I told them I was interested in buying a 36mm explorer or a 36mm datejust with a jubilee bracelet in basically any configuration, even 2 tone. I've waited since I think November, they keep telling me they have absolutely no rolexes to sell since the pandemic hype. I'm apparently even an oddball since every time I've ever asked them about what sizes people go for they always say all the men want the 40mm and over models, so you'd think me being the one asshole asking for 36mm watches would be a shoe in to get the next 36mm model that comes in, right? Apparently not. I have a hard time believing a 36mm watch hasn't crossed their desk within this calendar year.
>>
>>18173323
I like the idea of having 2 beaters. If your beater is quartz it doesn't really matter, but for automatic watches I like the idea of having more than one because you give them a chance to have some down time and reduce the wear on the movements. So I have 2 watches for doing work in, a bunch of watches I wear in a rotation whenever for casual stuff, a white dress watch and a black dress watch.
>>
>>18173323
>All you need is a beater, a daily, and one or two for special occasions.

It depends on how you dress. There can be a lot of overlap. If your style is mostly casual, then you may not need a full-on dress watch and something like a Datejust will do fine on those rare occasions you wear a suit. On the other hand, if the only time you sweat is when you eat, you don't need a sports watch.

The broad four categories:
- beater (ex. G-Shock)
- daily/casual (ex. Datejust)
- dress (ex. Tank)
- sports/weekend (ex. Submariner)

>meh there are so many other dress choices besides rolex and cartier just buy either a lower or higher price point
"ex." means example.
Those are the most obvious choices, but they also give someone who might not know much a good jumping off point.
A Datejust is a perfect example of a daily wearer. You don't have to buy one, but you know that it's not too sporty, not too dainty, and fairly robust.

But I know this is /wt/ and as soon as Rolex is mentioned, bittercels get triggered.
>>
>>18173424
>most likely they have giant movements all developed during the 44mm+ era of watches and can't go any smaller without using a subpar/non-coaxial movement or designing a new one from scratch

The Globemaster has the full-size 8900 movement and it's only 39mm. I don't think movement size is that much of an issue. It's just a design choice.
>>
>>18173427
Maybe they caught me saying something a little too based online. From what I understand ADs take names they've been getting for their "list" and look them up online and see what their online presence says about them.
>>
>>18173424
The aquaterras have movements in multiple sizes. That's actually another thing that's retarded about them, the 4 different size cases use 3 different movements. Actually, you could argue there are 5 different movements as some of them use small seconds and the large and mid sized movements have separate small second variants. It's genuinely a clusterfuck of a line.
