>>18186922Nice matching outfit.>>18187083Based OD.I'm actually curious, have you gotten any compliments so far? People Do say, after all, that the reverso is the best conversation starter.
>>18187088Nice Digits. I absolve you. I absolve you all, for I am your champion...your patron saint.>>18187089In my circle, only one other colleague has mentioned it. He's 'jealous', as he says, though he owns some watches that I am jealous of (i.e. a few beautiful Breguets), so it goes both ways. Honestly Fren, no one really cares about watches in person. If you happen to have Frens or colleagues who are 'into watches', then conversations begin. But I always take the perspective of simplicity: what would my grandmother say?>Protip - she'd probably say, 'it's very elegant, and suits you; here, have some more ribs, you're getting thin!' The reason I bought it was simple: I love perfection, and if I can own it, I'm happy. To me, this Reverso is the perfect Reverso. Perfect proportions, perfect execution, and perfect performance. That is the draw, the thing that makes my eyes happy and thus my heart as well. If everyone else thought the watch ugly, I'd still buy it because to me it's perfect. Does that make sense? I've been trying to expand my horizons a bit lately, trying to understand why people find watches that I find ugly beautiful. To that extent, there has been progress; for instance, I now understand the love for the Cartier Louis But it did take some time and serious research.I'm sorry if that comes as a let-down. On the Intranet, watches can seem like a serious thing where social status can increase substantially just by owning a vintage 321. In the real world, however, no one really cares except 1) watch dealers who are trying to take advantage of you and 2) actual watch enthusiasts who find it cool to see something they might never see again. I don't often encounter 2), and I try to stay away from 1). When I was wearing it with my tuxedo a few nights ago (club occasion), no one noticed. That's perhaps the 'right' thing for a formal watch. What are you wearing today, Fren?
>>18187096Forgot pic!!!!
>>18187089Sorry, Druk. You know the weirdest thing, Fren? I've handled lots of watches at different price tiers, but I've never had the desire to own anything other than what I have. This Reverso was the first departure into this realm that I had so long avoided just because it was never on my top tier list. Some things have come to light though:1) I should have gotten one a long time ago.2) A 'dress watch' is just a category. Ignore it, and buy the watch if you think it's amazing. Forget 'function', just wear it (even if you are driving up to the cottage).3) There are noticeable steps above and below this kind of manufacturing quality; to declare otherwise is to be either ill-informed or purposefully defiant.4) I wish everyone had one.I really love this watch. I knew I would, but that's more due to the design than anything else. But it's more than that now: >For the first time in my life, I'm contemplating selling off one or two of my other pieces.Crazy, huh? I know. I've spent a long time in sports-watch territory...maybe things are changing. Also, one last thing:>Rolex is absurdly generic and poorly finished compared to JLC. It's not even a contest, it's just sad. I would still love a double-red Seadweller, but I wouldn't take one over a Lange.
>>18187100How does the back look? Will you get it engraved or painted or otherwise personalized?
>>18187096Thanks for the detailed response. Yeah I understand, it's the logical conclusion that most of us in that hobby realise very quickly. To the majority, watches are invisible. In fact, they were to me too a couple of years ago. Even if people do care, it's because most of the time I mention it but it always has to be passed as a joke and in the moment. I usually, after we had a few drinks and the atmosphere is right, throw in the phrase, while I taking it off to show them->"Ah yeah btw did you notice my watch?"which always makes people laugh. Almost always, I will be the one to first engage with someone who's wearing an interesting piece. And it helped me make some very nice connections with people that otherwise I would've either never talk to or our relationship would boil down to a simple greeting in the mornings. There is no need to be overly poetic about watches or overglorify the hobby in general, because those who know, know. And that's more than enough for me.
>>18187100>For the first time in my life, I'm contemplating selling off one or two of my other pieces. You only now realised? That's also a conclusion that many, if not most of us, come to understand. That's why I started gifting and selling my "lesser" watches. It's about how your watch makes you feel, and after getting used to my favourite pieces, like I said, I started cutting down on my collection by a lot. If it doesn't feel right, why bother? I can't be wearing my, (excuse my french,) shitters and constantly be thinking >"aa.. i should've worn X instead"I'm getting a last watch, hopefully soon, and will keep my collection to five pieces. There is no need for Filler in life, I will keep it canon. Same goes for watches.
>>18187102I plan to get it serviced soon, and at that point I will have made my decision about engraving. Right now (due to druk), I'll 'definitely' get it engraved. Not sure when I'm sober though; at that point I'm simply walking the tightrope. I do really want to get it personalized though. I buy watches '4-life' (like a thug); it's not about keeping it for resale. >>18187103I missed you, CredorChan. I hope you're doing well and in good health. It's interesting what you say. Here's my perspective:1) I too find it's a great way to make connections. The one element I'm always considerate of is the wealth gap. Watches today are status and wealth symbols above all else, and with a quick google, it's easy for someone to get a feel for how much your watch costs. I don't like making people feel inadequate, or inferior, or anything like that. So, I always try to present the subject from the perspective of 'why something is remarkable'. That's all. Then things go smoothly. I think we'd have an interesting conversation over Sake. I will break that suggestion you made however: if you give me license, I'll be 'overly poetic' about every watch I own, because each one has aesthetic reasons why I bought it in the first place. There are always elements of 'perfection' that I find in them; if there weren't, they'd fall off 'the list' and never be bought. Incidentally, that's something the recent purchase of the broad arrow taught me (it's in for servicing right now). How are you otherwise? Is your girl doing well and treating you well? >>18187105The problem is that I know exactly why I bought them, and love them for the same reasons. It's just the Cognac talking. Still, I never considered it before, but the manufacture quality of the JLC is so far ahead that I can't help but think it. The problem is, if I followed my feeling to the logical end point, I'd sell everything and only live in Lange/Smith territory, because those are the best in my eyes.
>>18187103>Even if people do care, it's because most of the time I mention it but it always has to be passed as a joke and in the moment. I usually, after we had a few drinks and the atmosphere is right, throw in the phrase, while I taking it off to show them->>"Ah yeah btw did you notice my watch?">which always makes people laugh.Wow, what a tremendous faggot
>>18187105To put it another way: the only watches I've bought are ones I've thought about for a long time. In the recent past (i.e. the past 20 years), none of them are mistakes. I regret none of them, in other words. The thing that has changed though is that I never used to wear dress watches a lot...and in truth I still don't. But I can't help but hear the siren song of what a beautiful 2-hander can do for me...>if the watch is perfect in terms of design, proportion, and execution. If I could get this Tribute to 1931 in full platinum, with the correct size 1:1 to the original from almost 100 years ago, with a tourbillon in the back that doesn't show at the front, I'd be happy. :) Obviously, that's not going to happen, even if I commission JLC, because their movements are a different size now, etc.Anyway, the point is that if I deem a watch 'aesthetically perfect' (or close to it), I'll be liable to buy one and have it in my collection. I thought my buying days were over once I got my Grail, but I guess I hadn't factored in the elements of design that I'd ignored or passed over.If you asked me why the Mark 40 is perfect, I could tell you why. Same with the 2254.50, 2599.80, etc. Each one is 'perfect' in my eyes for what it does. The Reverso is the same: perfect. I just wasn't ready for the combination of aesthetic perfection + manufacturing quality that the JLC could provide. Why more people don't buy JLC, even second-hand, baffles me. I know some of their designs are ugly...that's fair; I guess that's why, really. What piece are you waiting for? Or is it a secret, so as not to corrupt the prices until you pull the proverbial trigger?
>>18186529Cut your nails, Ahmed
>>18187116Is the lume on the reverso pretty bright and long lasting?

Yesterday i had tiny wster droplets right in the center of the domeUnscrewed the back, used a rubber air blower and it was gone within one minute
>>18187116We're different on that aspect of-- I have to admit that I made many spontaneous purchases that I regretted down the line. I learned from those mistakes though. Curious, why didn't you have any affinity towards dress watches? The image I have of you is always a well dressed man in his late 30s, which makes it only natural to add a dresswatch to that image. And I'm not saying it just to say it but I truly believe that the Reverso "fits" you the most, at least in my headcanon. Even in a physical sense, one side is when you're sober, the other one when you're drunk lol.Tell me about what makes the JLC perfect? And what do you think of the recent price spike? Also, the piece that I got my eyes on is not necessarily a surprise, but I'd rather not jinx it because, like you said, it might get the prices to soar.>>18187111I'm doing fine. Have some paperwork to do and that includes a lot of waiting, which I dislike. How are you? You've active again lately.
>>18187123Based vintage orient restorer.
>>18187119Yes; just be aware that the minute/hour hands are different colour under UV light (they are blueish) and the markers are green. After the UV is turned off, they all glow the same green. Over night it's respectable, and the brownish 'faux-tina' colour in daylight doesn't seem to affect it. That's one of the reasons I love it so much...it even glows.>>18187120Doing excellently, CitizenChad! When it comes to Cognac, I drink what is convenient and available. Not a connoisseur, to any degree. How are you keeping?>>18187130I appreciate your thoughts; I'll try to clarify.>why didn't you have any affinity towards dress watches?Because I didn't have use for them. I use my pocket watches exclusively for dress occasions, so a 'dress watch' was unnecessary and useless. Plus, none of them could match the accuracy of my Zenith, so in a sense, 'why bother'. Above all, I've always been a 'function-first' person when it comes to watches, since they're primarily luxury items. It's a gentle conceit. >What makes the JLC perfect?Simple: the proportions of the dial, indices, hands (and their length), case proportions, execution of materials, and performance. Everything is perfect: perfect to the eye (for all aesthetic issues), and perfect for my requirements (i.e. performance). It's a perfect watch, and they are rare to come by. There's nothing...no-thing in the design that makes me upset, or cringe, or concerned. My 105-012 is the same...another 'perfect' watch. My Citizen 0100 is the same for me as well. To go into detail is possible, but would take too long and I'm too drunk. One day, perhaps. Understood about your piece that you're thinking of...good luck with the hunt!Glad to hear you're doing well, though inundated with paperwork. I'm doing well, in good health, and in great spirits. I am only stopping by because of the 'new' additions to my collection.
Since you asked...>symmetry of the dial>length of hour plots vs. hands and where they arrive for each segment.>Golden Ratio (nearly) being used everywhere, for each delineation of sector and quadrant.>active vs. dead space.>active vs. dead shape.I could go on and on. How about this - at some times of the day, the dial and handset look like a soldier in the middle defending himself (using a sword) from attackers on all sides using spears. How cool is that?
>>18187142I am keeping well, thanks for asking fren. The weather is great here and I am off from work atm.Have you compared a JLC to a Rolex face-to-face? How evident are the differences in their finishing and feel?
>>18187100>>Rolex is absurdly generic and poorly finished compared to JLC. It's not even a contest, it's just sad. I would still love a double-red Seadweller, but I wouldn't take one over a Lange.Disagree.I had a Richemont-era Reverso Duoface and I just bought a pre-Richemont Master Control. I have zero bad thing to say about these watches, but the finishing is far from high-horology tier. I'd say it's reasonable for the price (ie comparable to Rolex).I also find it questionable to compare dress(y) watches with sports watches. Rolex makes impeccable bracelets and clasps nowadays so you have to take that in consideration.
>>18187136YESSS I FUCKING RESTORED THIS WATCH LOL
>>18187147Glad to hear you're doing well!Regarding JLC and Rolex: here's what I've experienced:1) Rolex prior to 1995 is worse than Omega, so at that point I don't even bother to compare. Worse in terms of feel, bracelets, case finishing, dials, etc. Post 1995, Rolex catches up, and they're about even.2) For modern JLC and Rolex, JLC is above, for two separate reasons:a) The cases tend to be more complex, and yet still finished to a very fine degree.b) The horological capability and execution is far above Rolex in terms of complication, calibre, etc. Rolex watches are somewhat brutish by comparison, but then again, they are tool watches. Omega watches, compared to Rolex, feel somewhat brutish. Oris, compared to Omega, feel somewhat brutish...you see what I mean? Even the winding mechanisms feel better on a JLC than on a Rolex (i.e. less 'grindy'). If we throw aesthetics aside for a moment, the feel is also different. It is the same feeling I had when I first handled my Citizen 0100 - it 'feels' expensive, and quite dense for what it is. JLC is somewhat similar, but different; Rolex feels dense but 'understandably so' due to the size. JLC feels delicate yet robust; that's a very hard thing to achieve. Breguet, by comparison, doesn't feel robust, though it definitely feels delicate. Lange, on the other hand, feels robust and the opposite of delicate. Does that make sense?>>18187148I agree with your assessment regarding the bracelets of Rolex, as compared to others in its price category. That being said, I find them worse than JLC or Piaget, so I leave them in the category of 'tool-watch'. Congrats on the Master Control, btw - I've been following your receivership of it. How is it running? cont.
>>18187148>>18187151Regarding your Reverso duoface - the manufacturing tolerances for the reversing mechanism alone can show just what JLC is capable of. The mechanism should be (and is in my example) tight, sturdy, and suspiciously robust. Even with a SkyDweller bezel, I've never felt that before (yes, yes, they're different mechanisms, but one feels 'tight' and the other feels 'looser'.) Case finishing will depend on your example, of course, but mine is far better finished than a Rolex, and the dial and handset show far fewer flaws (i.e. none) than any Rolii I've examined under loupe. I'd agree with you that it doesn't make sense to compare dress watches with sports watches. I will however compare the two because of the convenient price bracket (and Omega does fall into this too, and loses to a significant degree depending on the model). >>18187130I forgot - you asked about the price hike. Well, JLC is lowering prices again, so perhaps things will equalize after a time. Of course, I got my Reverso from Japan, so in a sense none of it matters. I think the general watch market will 'go back to pre-Covid' numbers in a few years, so maybe it's worth waiting if you are looking at a piece that was in high demand. With this Reverso, I couldn't wait though...they're not making any more of them at the moment, and the prices have stabilized for the past few months.
tired of seeing your boring old way overvalued watches bye
>>18187148Maybe I'll sum it up this way:>the JLC accomplishes more using less.
>>18187158>the JLC accomplishes more using less.Sounds like cope to me
>>18187151>>18187153>>18187158Maybe it depends on the models but the two JLCs I've owned didn't strike me as exceptionally well finished. They're really nice but they're not "fuck, this is awesome" nice. I know it's cliché to say this, but the two brands that made a really good impression on me were Rolex and Patek (particularly pre-Thierry Stern Patek), obviously for different reasons. Modern Rolex feels rock solid (contrary to Omega which, I agree, just feels nice). Patek feels like actual fine luxury with an insane attention to details. Again, I'll say JLC is fair for the price but they don't have any outstanding qualities. Not directly related, but I also think JLC make some weird design choice these days>double deployant buckle on their leather straps (I hate these)>one case size for the whole Master Control line, so now the basic 3 hands is only available in 40mm>the whole Polaris line, which is unclear and doesn't make a lot of senseAnd I won't even mention their marketing choice... I sound like I shit a lot on JLC but I keep buying them. One day I'll get a Memovox.
>>18187171>Modern Rolex feels rock solidMan, every time I've handled one the crown just felt wrong. The way it pops out and some of the inner tube becomes visible when you unscrew it feels like it's not supposed to happen. I know it is supposed to, I know it's mean that way, but it just feels like it's finished too quickly and they keep the stem too long because they don't have to adjust it thanks to the screwing and the spring action within the crown and tube. It's a case of the brain and the hands saying two opposite things. The brand that felt most solid in my experience was Blancpain with the Fifty Fathoms and the Air Command. Everything feels in the right place, and to have just the right level of action and purchase. Same Swatch wants it to shoot itself in the foot over and over with dimensions and materials.
>>18187158cope too hard there
>>18187178>The brand that felt most solid in my experience was Blancpain with the Fifty Fathoms and the Air Command.I've never handled these. Will try to visit an AD some time. I really wish they'd make a reedition of picrel. Such a beautiful diver.
>>18187184Gosh that dial looks so tiny
>>18187184What's so frustrating is that they COULD.They can make the FF in smaller sizes, infact they've done it very recently but it's either in gold or titanium or is a limited edition (like the norad they made for fucking Hodinkee). They can make an Air Command that looks more like a classic FF than the current production models do. They COULD.But they won't because that would be too close to the higher end Seamasters and the Planet Ocean from Omega and you can't have someone step on their toes, can't risk hurting that money-printing-machine.Thanks, Swatch.
>>18187187The Seamaster sells around 6k. The PO around 8k.They could make a proper Fifty Fathoms reedition in stainless steel and ask 10-12k for it.Hodinkee and watch YouTubers would call it "the Submariner killer" or whatever.

Good morning guys,Not sure how I feel about the ballon bleu. I love the color but the model is a little feminine imo.
The Swatch group is a disaster, even Richemont has done a good job lately with the Vacheron HISTORIQUES and Cartier PRIVÉ collection. However, the brand treated worst by Richemont is JLC, the Reverso Tribute collection is a disaster. It's a shame you can't buy the original Reverso design, however you can with the Cartier tank.

Which ones are worse, Rolex or Grand Seiko owners?Imo it's easily the Rolex owners, they always have to be in your face about it. "It's a ROOLEX", "ROOLEX means you've made" etc.GS owners largely don't push their crap on you and flex with their watch.
