/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - CAP TOE BROGUES EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

so i'm figuring out sizing for some iron rangers and i did all the brannock shit whatever, and it works out to a size 7. is that typical because i'm usually a 9 or 9.5 in a flat canvas shoe (vans, converse) and that seems really small

i can't try anything in person so i'm relying completely on the numbers / other reference shoes
>>
>>18269030
you can't size in person but you managed to get a brannock sizing?

I ordered one of these too. Problem is my mind is so powerful that it can literally alter the fabrics of reality. I can basically be a 9,5 to 10 brannock depending on what I want to be. I ordered a pair of boots but felt they were too snug so I decided to bite the bullet and actually buy a brannock device which then showed that I should be wearing half a size bigger boots so I ordered half a size bigger boots but then when I got them they felt too big so I went back to the brannock which then showed I should be wearing half a size smaller boots(original size). Don't even get me started on widths.

Having such a powerful mind can be a curse at times. I just wish God had put some of that power into my dick instead
>>
>>18269114
oil stains are almost impossible to get out completely, the best you can do is to immidiately wipe it off once it happens and rub some spit in to get the lingual lipase to help you out a bit
cleaning with soap and water can make the stain a lot worse by spreading it out over a larger surface and it doesn't get much lighter
talcum powder can absorb some of the stain if you leave it on for some time, avel (the parent company of saphir) makes an oil stain remover in spray or liquid form called hussard, any other leather degreaser probably does the same thing, but if it's set in deep it won't make much of a difference anyway

>OG clarks

Clarks just caused me some major seethe the past week. I bought a pair of their Alwin cap Chukkas even though one boot already started to crease while trying out in the store, relying on being able to bring them back after the dumbe sales bitch promised me that.

Wore them a few hours at home, and had a fucking seam rip plus more creases and the soles already started to frazzle from just walking around on even wood flooring.

When I tried to bring the shoes back, the same dumb bitch told me I had already "worn out" the shoes, so im 130 bucks out of pocket.
Went to get my first Red Wings everr after that because I am done wasting money on cheap shit instead of getting something that will last me 10+ years.

tl;dr: Clarks is chinkshit now

Can I get a recc for decent work boots that have a leather insole and actual lugs. I can't have crepe for this job.

Stitchdown would be preferred over GYW.
I thought the African rangers would be perfect but they don't have lugged sole

>>18269204
I just realized the razorbacks had lugs.

I really don't want a padded collar on them or whatever the term is. But if nobody has any other reccs I guess I have no choice but jim green

Yeah, I now learned taht lesson the hard way. I expected the usual shit boots that last a year or two at least, but Clarks just took the cake by having them last 30 minutes instead.

>>
>>18269304
I don't really wear mocs, but if I had $400 to spend on some I'd either save another $350 go with Russel Moccasins (the backcountry boot is the alpha and omega of moccasin) or pocket $300 of the $400 and go with LL Bean anyway since mocs are inherently beater shoes.
>>
>>18269324
I recommended them because for many it helps them set their priorities straight, but looks like you're immune
>>
>>18269324
>jim green sells a work boot with lugs you know right?

Yeah basically just the razorback. But its ugly as hell. Padded collar gets too hot. Their "work" boots have the "tyre" tread. Not aggressive enough it's basically just a normal wedge tread. If I have to pay to upgrade the insole too then ehhh. Hoping someone has a different route to go. There's gotta be something else I just am not finding it.
>>
>>18269329
They seem to either destroy egos for most but for some it highly inflates it. He clearly is the latter. These types always lie about their number of experiences and dosages too. This dude hasn't done multiple thumbprints, cmon. Probably split an 1/8 if shrooms with his friends and freaked out when he was 17. Kept listening to Tame Impala and Shpongle for a few years without touching the stuff. Now he "got the message and hung up the phone" but still brags about how many psychs he "used to do"
>>
>>18269339
We aren't the same anons. I don't ever reccomend psychs to people. They should have stayed in the underground where they belonged. Gardening on salvia is classic. I enjoy salvia a lot more than mushrooms myself. Can be scarier but it feels more like you've jumped to a different plane rather than your current one becoming warped.
>>
>>18269334
I've always been curious about psychedelucs, but I know there's something terrible lurkingbin the deeps of my mind and I'm terrified of releasing it. I don't know if I could deal with it.

if you're predisposed to mental illness don't do them. if you must and you suspect you could be, wait until you're 40 if you're male. specifically because if you're predisposed to schizophrenia you're very likely for it to manifest in your 20's-30's but less likely as you age, extremely unlikely after 50. psychedelics can DEFINITELY trigger you go to schizophrenic i've watched it happen in real time before, and i have to wonder if it would have ever manifested in people who's mental illnesses get triggered by a psy experience.
psychedelic users are very shilly and will downplay and lie to you about the risks.
"set and setting is everything" and this includes your mind.
"guise i just discovered psychedelics a few years ago and i think EVERYONE should do them" is a common experience for newer users who haven't really been around long enough to see how abruptly they can destroy someone's life and mental faculties. you just saw it earlier in this thread from some zoomer thinking his little sub-5 years of experience trying to shill it on me when i know for sure there's no way he has 1% my experience with them. i know several people who lost their marbles for life from a single shroom trip or whatever. mdma acid dmt can trigger it too. schizophrenia and bipolar seem to be the most common when it happens.

I have TLBs and they're very good but the artista lasts are very dressy.
I followed their size guide and it said UK10 and it's correct, normally I'm UK10.5 in most other brands.

I own a pair of chukkas and black captoe oxfords from them, both on the artista rounded last. I just ordered a pair of dark brown suede chelseas on the madison last which is not artista and kinda round and more casual, let's see how that turns out.

i wasn't making it up when i said i know several people who were predisposed to mental illness and had a single use of psychedelics trigger it. here's the guy i was talking about's bathroom. he has a 9 year old and an 11 year old living in this environment. he did shrooms once after a divorce (he initiated) then decided his kids don't matter only parties and having casual sex with strangers. he uses psychedelics and ecstasy about 5 days a week now. this is a clean cut dude, 6 figure earning programmer and he lets his kids live in trash and filth. this pic was a few days after we made him clean his bathroom can't find the before. he's the full time caregiver for 2 pre pubescent children.
trust me i speak nothing but truth and from far more experience with psychedelics than some random anons in a boot thread could ever have. i'm not going to incriminate myself but i'll say two of my thumbprints were accidental, use your imagination.

That's my concern. I wear a size 9 and the double row doesn't look bad on my work/hiking boots because they have v100 soles on them. The finishing on the pair I want looks pretty tight, I don't think I would have a lot of excess shelf but maybe it's better to be safe than sorry.

Well, I suffer from chronic depression and took a handful of years of theraphy to learn how to deal with it. I've done drugs before (cocaine and pot) but never too much and I barely drink these days. There is however a tendency to mental illness on my father's side with at least one petson suffering a severe case of schizophrenia triggered by doing crack, I beleive.
Just one of the reasons why I've never done hard stuff before (other than coke a handful of times, I swore I would never do it again because I saw myself getting hooked to that quite easily).
Friend of mine used to do shrooms and talked wonders about the effect on one's mind, so that's why I've always bern curious but at the same time very wary about it.
Anyway, I think I'll stay clear of the stuff for the time being. Mind-altering substances and me do not work well together. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I would not say Jakkrabbits is higher end, they have a very unique look that is very distinctively Indonesian and not the best patterns of lasts.
Tahura is very good and Onderhund is considered the best. But you have to be very specific in what you want, don't leave anything up to them, if you want a single midsole specify that.

Will be getting a pair of Red Wings tomorrow, likely the Blacksmith. I'm having trouble deciding on a color - at least from looking at images online. Probably going to go with Copper but I'm wondering if I'm sleeping on the Briar or Black Prairie? The black looks interesting as it ages but I would want to sometimes wear them with (khaki) chinos and that might not look great. The briar looks great but I maybe too reddish, and not as varied as it wears.

Also might just end up getting IR in amber or muleskinner.
>>
>>18271982
I've got irs in amber and are very happy with them, to the point it's one of the boots I wear the most. Copper was a close second choice but ultimately I liked amber better. Don't know if they're currently offering blacksmiths in copper.
The muleskinners are cool but veralk less versatile so I wouldn't get them as my first or main boot -so to speak- unless you're 100% sure those are the ones you want.
Bottom line is you can't go wrong with amber or copper since both work well with khaki chinos.
And as for irs vs blacksmiths, it depends on how you feel about the captoe, that's up to you.

i was wondering how this could happen in an area where the sole doesn't have to bend at all and doesn't usually see much wear
how could the glue and stitching BOTH fail so fast? it's almost impossible

the anwser is so obvious now
the outsole is not stitched at all and the glue was rushed, usually you have to do two layers of glue for leather soles, since the first one completely soaks into the leather
at least the decorative tacks do something and prevent this from completely peeling off

holy shit $1,2k, people are getting robbed blind with this and the CEO is like

What is the limiting factor for White's / Nick's to not hire more people? With lead times that long, they are leaving money on the table not having more capacity. Is it
>not enough skill laborers in their area

>>18273510
handwelting is hard work and is the main bottleneck for whites
>>
>>18273491

>>
>>18273461

Rising cost of living in the PNW is fucking up everyone who's not an expat web developer from cali.
Nobody wants to be a trainee for years in stitching boots when the salary can't cover expenses.
>>
>>18273510
I dunno about White's, but Bakers said he just does not have the time to check every custom order anymore. That's why they had so many "final few" boots there for a long time and kept getting new ones, they were all fuck ups from Whites. I imagine it's mostly just the volume of orders and with higher volume comes more fuck ups. Couple that with a talent deficiency across ALL industries and it's just a fact of life.

I sent my White's back after they were the wrong leather and wrong height, but they offered to just let me keep them and ship me a new pair. Nick's likely would not do such a thing.
>>
>>18273510
No one wants to make boots for $20 bucks an hour when rent is $2200 and groceries cost $150 every time. Not in a high cost of living state like Washington
And you only make $20 after 2 years when you're fully trained. You'll make $15 until then. It's just not enough to live on. No point when Costco pays $25 to fold clothes
>>
>>18273532
I didn't realize the pay they were offering was so bad. That explains it, then
>>
>>18273537
"Living wage" just means $20 bucks an hour or close to it. That's 41k a year BEFORE taxes
Only people that would do that job are boomers who bought a home when it cost $100k and their mortgage payment is 300 a month
Young people are not taking these jobs. American boot making (and pretty much anywhere in a developed country) will die out because they can't get workers
>>
>>18273549
My guess is most brands will outsource production and a few will become small operations selling exclusive MTOs with a 18 month lead time and a 2k starting price.
>>
>>18273586
Outsourcing is a hot potato as the countries we delegate labor to become lesser shitholes too. So all the shit stuff will also be more expensive

I really fucked up. I like my White's 350 cruisers and they are now my most comfortable boots, but I should have customized them to have a 7 or 8 inch shaft. I just don't like how the 6 inch sits on my ankles.

Do you guys clean the soles of your boots?

no, unless the edges count
first with an old toothbrush and then with a damp cloth

Yeah I hate the toe cap on Truman's. I'll put up with it if it's the only option but no way I was keeping it on an MTO. Especially since I need an EE width. And they're the new soles. I've heard they're kind of soft for lugs, but I can just swap them out once they wear down.
