Dogs like huskies and border collies are notorious for needing to run MILES every day or else they go crazy. If you're a fat guy, you're obviously not running a 5K every morning, so why get a high energy dog instead of a dog that matches your energy level like a pug

I would go for mixed berries. Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. I recommend either buying them frozen or freezing the fresh ones so they don't turn to mush when you're preparing them.

Toss the frozen berries with some lime juice and cornstarch. Tartness from the lime juice is to help balance out the sweetness of the berries. Cornstarch will prevent the filling from becoming runny (runny filling will lose no matter how good everything else is).

Keep the pastry crust simple... equal parts by weight of flour and fat, pinch or two of salt and just enough cold water where it barely holds together.

Now this is how you win. Use lard instead of shortening or butter. It will have a rich, nutty flavor that will compliment the sweet/tart filling. Also, keep the pastry thin. Thick pastry is a trick by supermarkets to save money on filling (not even joking). Around 1/4" is perfect imo.

Basic order of operations: mix and roll pastry, put it in pie dish and place in freezer, prepare filling and pour into crust (filling should be heaping since it will bake down some), cover filling with pastry (I like a lattice pattern), place in freezer for 20 min, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with large sugar crystals before baking until crust is golden.

More tips: Don't burn the crust, idiot. You can use a strip of foil to prevent the edge from getting overbaked. Also, practice ahead of time. You want to make sure the filling doesn't run everywhere when you slice it. I'm sure the kids won't complain about eating the less than perfect pies. (Bro tip: runny pie filling is basically compote and is great over vanilla ice cream).

Finally, just relax and have fun (seriously tho, your wife will leave you if you fail)
