Who is /fat/ for?
For diligent dieters who are working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros) or LoseIt (great for both).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

I would if I had a crockpot I'd feel safe leaving on for days, I have a gas range and I dont feel safe leaving it on unsupervised for days. I might look into getting an electric crockpot and start doing that, it does sound nice to have some homemade stock.

Is going for a bigger deficit than 1000 calories sustainable?
I'm just over 300lbs and I've been eating about 1200cals total each day, with about 100g of protein
I get cravings here and there but I honestly can deny them pretty easy at this point
If anybody has advice I'd love to hear it
I'm planning to lift 3 times a week (once my dyel soreness cools off) and already do 30 minutes of light cardio every day
>>
>>75705655
>dyel soreness
Not a real thing
>>
>>75705671
for real?
first time i go to the gym in a long time, i am always sore for 4 or so days before i feel comfortable going back
second and third time are bad, but get better
after the fourth time, it takes me maybe 36 hours to recover
what's going on here?
>>
>>75705655
Yes, you can maintain a very deep deficit for a fairly long time without any major issues have a protein source, a bit of fat (~50g) and maybe take a few vitamin supps (fish oil, magnesium, K2, D, Zinc) and you can do that for months without any issues. I'd eat more protein though, 150g at a minimum.

150g of protein (600kcal) and 50g of fat (450kcal) would put you at 1050kcal with about 37.5g (150kcal) left over for carbs with your 1200 limit, seems doable. But the question is would you be able to stick with it, your options on hitting those specific targets would be pretty small.

thanks for the advice
today i hit 47 carb, 58 fat, 95 protein so far at 1100cals
i could modify what i'm doing now and replace those carbs with protein

How do I save my fat family? We made new years resolution to lose weight but they've given up already. They buy donuts and cookies in multi packs and literally offer them to me on a plate. It's bad enough that they're gluttonous but they're trying to sabotage me as well.

So true, don't buy anything you will regret consuming. Simplest fucking rule but so often fucked up.

We see people saying shit like "Bros I just binged on [thing I know I shouldn't consume] how did this happen!? Oh no! My entire week's deficit was ruined!" It happened because you bought it and had it in your house. If you keep that shit in your house you're going to consume it. Same goes for booze, throw out your booze, throw out your junk food, throw out anything you're going to regret consuming later and don't buy it again.

The grim reality is even if I lose all the weight I don't see it changing anything except I die a few years later. It's not like I'll magically gain a bunch of life long friends and a family and children. All of those things you had to get when you were young.

This was basically my reason for not starting earlier than I was forced to.
At the end of the day I'm just delaying the inevitable and trying to prevent further misery instead of having something good to look forward to.
Literally just mitigating damage and pain.
I always had the dream that someday I might change, but even when I put in the effort I couldn't make it and now I'm at an age where making long-term meaningful friendships isn't easy. Environment is just not set up for it, nor am I.

>It's not like I'll magically gain a bunch of life long friends and a family and children. All of those things you had to get when you were young.
I have one friend and we often have a saying that goes along the lines of "never going to get married at 20" and versions of it.
The ideal dreams are impossible as the time to reach for them is long gone.
I no longer qualify as a "young man" of which I have to remind myself every time I hear "young men" mentioned in media/online.

The world and the internet is getting fucked in real time as well, so hey... at least I will get into shape to maybe be able to do some work that requires me standing and walking around someday. That way I'll be able to survive even longer if the low skill white collar jobs are gone form AI or whatever. Survive and suffer less than I have to.
For what reason other than fear of death? I should really get a dog...
>>
>>75705965
Huh?
>>
>>75705974
>I always had the dream that someday I might change, but even when I put in the effort I couldn't make it and now I'm at an age where making long-term meaningful friendships isn't easy
I know this feel. I guess life just feels a bit pointless once you lose those real connections, i have work friends but it isn't the same. I don't think i'd associate with them or them with me if we didn't work together. It all just feels so empty now.....
>>
>>75705974
>For what reason other than fear of death?
For me it's not wanting to put my mother through the pain of me dying first that keeps me going. Which is ironic because she is the biggest reason I ended up this way but at some point you just can't hold onto old resentments any longer. I gotta hold on until she goes at least, maybe there's some kind of happiness out there for me too but I'm not holding my breath for it. My younger and fitter friends aren't any happier and they can't find good wives or gf's either so what hope do I have?

I'm helping a friend gettin fitter, but he trains at home. he doesn't want to get big or anything, just leaner and stronger.
no machines, just a couple of dumbells. could someone suggest back exercises with dumbells?
>>
>>75705433

My parents are 70 year old boomers, I can't do things with them that I could do with people my own age. My dad completely ignored modern forms of entertainment. I can't talk to him about video games or any media I am into. He just talks about football and my mom is a dyed in the wool Christian and anything more risque than the waltons or little house on the prairie is taboo.
I care about them but they aren't people I can spend a lot of meaningful time with. I see all the time but it's not the same as having friends or a mate.

Starbucks changed their matcha powder base and it's no longer sweetened. you can order an unsweetened matcha latte there so long as you omit the sugary syrup they add in by default.
>inb4 Starbucks teeth gnashing
>>
>>75706060
why can't you talk to your dad about any of the media you're into?
have you thought about bringing it up and explaining the basic concepts of those stories and worlds with him?
my grandpa doesn't understand a thing about videogames but i can bring it up the gist of characters or moments or the world-building
he can relate that to books and movies he's watched, funny life stories, even the modern news cycle
my grandma is a lot like your mom, but i always have fun watching more family oriented programming with her and just making conversation about her life, even if its just stupid random questions
unless you still have childhood friends, you are going to have to reach out and put some effort into socializing with others
its not like everyone will just click with you

> little house on the prairie
Easy. Get her into Highway to Heaven (1984), she'll love seeing the dad hanging out with Isaiah again, and once she's a few seasons in, get her into Quantum Leap (1989), it's almost exactly the same premise.
From there, she'll soon be ready to transition into MacGyver (*not* the remake), after which you can land her softly into Stargate: SG-1, and boom, you have found common ground.
Alternatively, you could try to go from Quantum Leap to Star Trek: Enterprise, but that's a bit more jarring.
>>
>>75705978
I wish I still had a family like that. You're lucky. My dad died of cancer in 2017, my mom and brother are disabled with degenerative disease and depend on me to care for them full time, I love them, but they've deteriorated and sometimes its hard remembering what it was like when they were whole. My extended family all live out of state and are hundreds of miles away its been years since I've seen any of them, last time was my dad's funeral. They're essentially strangers at this point.

I wonder how I was okay for so long, I was pretty positive until late last year. Guess I was just good at deluding myself. I'm 35 now, not young anymore, feels too late in life to pursue any sort of career or social life. When I started taking care of my family I didn't realized just what it was I was giving up. I love them, and they depend on me, but at the end of the day I feel trapped and alone, and its an awful feeling. I started this fresh out of highschool and I dont think I ever expected to still be doing this. My cousin with the same disease died when he was only a few years older than my brother at the time and I wanted to spend as much time with him as I could. Now hes outlived my cousin by over a decade. My dad was the healthy one, and for the first 9 years I've been doing this he was my teammate in this, but its been just me since his death its weighing on me more and more as the years go by. It wasn't until recently it really hit me I wasn't young anymore, that I'd already passed the points of no return several times, and all those fantasies about living my real life, moving on, getting a job, home, wife, kids of my own, ect were totally unrealistic.

So now I'm just losing weight becuase it feels like the only thing I can do. It's something I can control and look forward to, 'number go down' is all I have. I miss my family, when we were still whole, really does feel empty.

Cherish your family, you got it good.

Is your dad diabetic type 2? There are some darn good reasons to be mindful of his carbs if he is.
Ultimately, I wouldn't fight him too much on carbs. If he wants to be low carb, fine, why not.
The TDEE stuff is important, and should be presented to him as something important, but not something that goes against his carb dogma.
Start with baby steps, like tracking your calorie intake and showing him how easy it is for him to do it too.
Similarly, explain how to minimize saturated fat is a really good idea for anyone with metabolic syndrome or heart related issues.

Unfortunately that's not as easy as just losing weight. That means doing calisthenics and still consuming high protein. Youre fueled by sugars but you're built with protein and maintained with vitamins and minerals. If you aren't adding building material, nothing will be built. Could you send a picture of your ideal body, that could give you and us a better idea of what you want and how to achieve it.

>>
>>75706676
One of my siblings actually listened because their goal is build muscle and they've gone nowhere, so i said time to start tracking your intake; how certain are you that you're eating more than you need to maintain your current body? How certain are you of the protein you're consuming? Eat normally for a week then assess if you have gaps. Lo and behold, not nearly as much protein and just hitting maintenance. Next step i want to ease in is using a step counter and logging intentional exercise to see if it's exceeding what the app thinks TDEE should be, or if they're just way more active. I already know, but it's best when they see themselves. Does your dad actually know how many carbs he eats? I sold my sibling by using it to track macros and it might show a calorie difference, turned out positive to see proof. Tell him he shoukd try and see how many carbs he actually eats and then point out his calories to TDEE

Yeah, so avoiding carbs is actually a really good idea for him, along with plain old CICO.
If he can stick to only getting carbs from whole vegetables and fruits, his blood sugar levels are going to normalize to the point where he'll need to lower and eventually stop any medication he takes to lower his blood sugar, or his sugar will dip too low.
If this is too abrupt of a change, you could introduce him to "keto ice cream", it comes in many kind of disgustingly sweet tasting flavors, but it's a lot easier on sugar blood levels. They will contain dangerous amounts of saturated fats, and eating a whole pint is still super bad for him, but you know, baby steps.
Various other super-carby foods have "keto" variants now that are edible, most notably bread.
If he has a continuous blood sugar monitor, it'll be easier for him to see the impact and understand why this is a good idea.
If not, well, get him on a CGM. If the prescription models are too expensive, there are OTC models nowadays, like the Stelo which retails as cheap as $42 a pop (for 14 days of monitoring, so still over $1K/year), but they can't legally market themselves as useful for knowing when to shoot insulin or time any other medical intervention. In my experience, they are no less accurate than prescription models, just functionally gimped in terms of some features.

Probably not. Yes it will lower your body fat. No you will not get a V-taper magically that way.
Instead, you should recomp. Eat at maintenance, high protein, and workout religiously.
If you can blow $40 a month on it, consider getting regular DEXA scans from BodySpec or something so you can track your progress since a simple scale won't do much for you anymore (and impedance scales are garbage.)
If you start to see the recomp slowing down, you may want to switch to a mild, clean bulk to continue seeing progress.

I'd say you need to trade 10kg of fat for muscle, I'd focus on lifting, building up your chest/back/shoulders. Like the other guys said, eat maintenance, stop cutting, and try to make progress on your lifts. Goal weight is rarely goal body, people who cut fast without lifting hard usually look like shit and are unhappy with how they look at their goal weight, but after 6 months or so of recomp they start looking good. Cutting more will just make you look and feel more like shit, Auschwitz mode isn't appealing to anyone.

Yes, we're kinda going blind here unless you post body but you've got dial with three positions, you can either increase muscle (bulk eat surplus and lift heavy), decrease fat (cut, eat deficit and lift to maintain), or you can also do a little of both (recomp, eat maintenance and lift heavy). If you think you've got more muscle than that guy already you'll just want to cut.

Been extremely successful with my twink maxxing journey this year. This weekend, however, I’m drinking brewskis and eating deep dish with the family. Not trying too! but I have had a couple days where I was way too focused working on shit and didn't eat enough. but I still try to stay a little lower than the calculated TDEE the OP calculator uses.

Also that 5 pound drop from last week is a little exaggerated. I randomly hit a high of 210 last Friday (after being at 207 a few days prior) when I did my weigh-ins, and then dropped back down by Sunday.
I appreciate the support, man. Thank you!

Dude, a 120 lb loss is insane. I think the psychology of the holidays being an acceptable time to crash out on your journey is sorta okay. I suspect you’ve gotten really used to significant results when you’re losing weight like that in a YEAR. But as someone who wants to lose just a few lbs and it being super difficult to actually even notice a change at all, the day to day can be frustrating, and one day can wreck an entire week’s worth of effort. That being said, don’t let a 2-3 week blip be the end of such an incredible journey. If no one else has said it to you yet, this one anon is stoked on your progress. It’s insane. Stick to it, bro. You’ve already got it figured out; just a matter of getting back on the wagon

Bros, It took just 3 weeks for me to lose my way. The day before Christmas I was 2kg away from a new low, and now today I am almost 10kg. I let Christmas wreck me. I had worked hard to lose almost 40kg, I loved actually feeling like I was working towards something and getting results, I was happier, I got some confidence back to be around people again. I bought new some new clothes, I felt like I was starting to look good. I loved going to the supermarket, buying healthy foods, looking women in the eye as I walked past them and getting a smile. And now, all that feels a long time ago. I felt like I was fat again walking into the supermarket today. I just wanted to be in my sweat pants and hoodie again. I walked out of that place with chocolate and cola just like I used to do. This was the final straw. Im just writing this for myself, but I am sure others can relate. Im spending tonight redoing my tdee, planning out some meals and macros in MFP and getting back to it tomorrow. I know what to do, I have got this. I will be redeemed.

It helps to identify the root cause of your over consumption and address that. For me I started drinking heavy a few years ago due to depression which caused a negative feedback loop. Is it normal to be super horny after a hard work out? My friend told me that it's better to do an intense work out 3 days a week, every other day with either a break or light workout on those off day. Thing is on my on days when I'm done, I feel REALLY fucking horny, and it's such a fucking strong ass feeling I do usually give in, but the orgasim also feels so much more intense and amazing than normally.

Also on a more normal note and question: almost down to my short term goal of 250. What exercises should I be doing to gain more muscle mass when I don't have money for a gym or a lot of work out equipment? My friend says I should generally avoid lifting weights until I get used to how to do forms properly, and while he said he would teach and spot me our schedules are all over the place so we haven't been able to meet up.

So I've been eating more because "what's the point i cant even control my weight anymore", eating more salt i had a diet soda last night, and i gained a pound this week. Once a week or every other week. The issue I had and what many people seem to fail at is vanity. While you are more than likely doing this too look good, being overly obsessive with your weight can be the death of your goal, specially visually. I would suggest weighing yourself at most twice a week and trying not to be toooooooo obsessive over. Be conscious so you can recognize if you are platueing or if you think there is something you might need to change or consider.

Unironically depression makes you fat. Even if you don't eat the weird chemical imbalance in your brain produces fat. I've been in a similar boat where my life has been ass and in a depression over how shit my life is, thing is I haven't been eating because my depression makes everything taste like dog shit. I've been pushing myself a lot more in my work out and despite not eating and doing more I gained 2 pounds. I would jist suggest trying your damnest to not give in and stress eat and gvie up. Sleeping is better than eating and sleeping also helps you build your body as well since that is usually the time your body repairs itself both physically and mentally.

I know I'm high cortisol because I haven't been sleeping, Wednesday I weighed in post hard workout and I'd LOST a pound, thus morning I'm up a pound instead of down two. So if my dehydrated is that much lower what can i do but try to sleep and continue my workouts and resist better? I already fucked up by picking the cookie doughspoon, I'll log it as .25 a cookie. My impulse control is just fucked, I just gotta get a grip.

Fuck ups are temporary. Just keep eating right and staying on course. The more you don't the more your body is going to feak out and make it harder to lose weight. Don't feel guilty for splooging, everybody needs to do it from time to timw. Coping by nothing but pure will and mentally is hard as hell. Just don't give in to much.

Your body has the ability to synthesize most of what you need to survive for a fairly long period of time, that's how vegan and carnivore work but its better to just eat a balanced diet and eat fewer calories. Extreme diets like fasting and carnivore put a lot of stress on your system which will make your performance in other areas suffer.

But at the end of the day the best diet is the one that you can actually stick to. Be that traditional balanced diet or some novel fad diet. If you establish a caloric deficit you'll lose weight.

hm, I am absolutely spiraling internally over that comment, actually. outwardly I am perfectly calm and fine. inside... I can't remember the last thing that made me so self-sickened and embarrassed besides how those medical "professionals" treated me a few years back. unintentional soft meanspo from the one closest to me has me feeling like I can stare at this comment for the rest of 2025 and reap motivation from it to starve. I haven't felt this frantic need to lose weight quite like this in ages.

If an American doctor tells you that you're fat or you need to lose weight, you NEED to lose weight. Especially if you're a woman. (This reads like a woman post.)
>>
>>75709016
no, that was never the issue. there were nuances involved with that one.
>>
>>75709024
So what exactly did doc say?
>>
>>75709030
the comment I'm referring to now has nothing to do with those doctors, it's from someone that I know. the doctors saw an opportunity to fuck with me because I didn't have anyone with me (pandemic rules) and sometimes their ASPD gets rowdy, that's all.

Unfortunately... I am not an adult male. I just have square hands with short digits. Part of how I get around here so easily, I kinda figured it was just another physical manifestation of autism. It was always just another feature that made me "weird" and unwelcome. Patty also has square bulky hands, interestingly

So just because you were alone doctors decided to personally ridicule you just for funsies, and now even your dearest closest friends are calling you an ogress to your very face... and it's so horrible you can't repeat it.

I'm 105kg now. Just really short for a guy. 169-170 ish centimeters """"tall""""
Used to be 173 as measured by doctors when I was younger, but lower spine / nerd neck combo lost me some height.
Was around 114kg at my heaviest, 109kg a month ago.

Yes I'm going to ask a really stupid question: When ever says eat green vegies they don't mean LITERAL green vegies right? I bought a bunch of red peppers and white onions that I diced up and add with my food each meal. Should I have gotten green peppers instead? I didn't think there was a difference.
>>
>>75709212
In the case of bell peppers, they’re all similar in terms of macros. But reds have a higher vitamin content
>>
>>75709010
Cut your nails
>>
>>75709212
green veggies usually means like leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, etc.). more vitamins, more satiating, etc. red bell peppers and onions are still applicable but you want to diversify
>>
>>75709212
>Should I have gotten green peppers instead?
Important part is more veggies
Eat the ones that you like
Green or red the peppers have the same calories per 100g

Hoping someone can provide answers as I'm freaking out.
I started eating healthier and less in general after Christmas. I have already lost 4 kg which I am happy about but my stomach has inflated like crazy. I have had bloat issues before but my stomach would be soft and it would go away in a day or two, but this has persisted for 5 days now and my stomach is hard.
What can be the cause of this? I look 10 kg heavier despite going down in weight.

Sorry man, these are just hand genetics. After a lot of weight loss though you might be surprised by what your hands actually look like.
>>75709226
These are pretty short nubs for a female, I'm generally prefer long nails (no longer than 1/16th in) because they make my fingers look longer. But every so often it's good to cut em all off.

>>
>>75709369
Same here. Probably GERD and now that you have less food in your stomach it's bloating you like crazy.
I went and got all kinds of ultrasounds and whatnot, wasted a ton of money worried.
Try baking soda if you don't have any anti-acid stuff at home. Apple cider vinegar is supposed to help as well.
GERD is a typical fatso disease too.
Go see a doctor if still worried.

blogging notes to self.
patterns i have noticed the last 4 months:
eat small breakfast. every good, high-deficit day begins here.
eliminate mid-morning snacking. the first half of the day is when you have the most self-control, so harness this and don't eat 200 calories you would appreciate more in the evening.
eliminate/severely limit diet soda. sweet fizzy drinks go hand in hand with your old snacking/binging habits and continue to trigger this behavior. soda with lunch makes you want to snack afterwards. it makes you feel like your stomach is a bottomless pit to shove shit down. remember this you idiot.
stop putting off weight training. start now or be depressed with your body in 6 months. START TODAY.
>>
>>75709591

I'm closing in on the 10lb mark lost from the beginning of the year. I'm happy with result so far, although it doesn't look like I've lost a noticeable amount from my body, but instead my face is already noticeably thinner. I'm a 6'2" 26 year old male that was 248.2lbs and is now 241.8. I have a large frame and decent amount of muscle, but I wish to return to the ottermode I was in 2021. I've been walking a lot more and have been doing body weight exercises(squats, dips, knuckle push ups, and planning on working on pull ups when everything defrosts). I need to do more stretching, and I have had periods of me binging. I'm also caffeine maxing(yerba mate and moka pot all sugar, milk, and other additive free) to help stave off snacking. I completely avoid sugary drinks with the exception of the occasional bottle of wine and scotch. When I reach the 20lbs lost mark I'll post pictures for comparison.
>>
in terms of looks maxxing should I got for fit fat or skinny fit?

Nearly all women prefer the same body type for a guy, tall, lean, and with intermediate level musculature. Of you're looking to attract women that's what you shoot for. Oh and women like broad shoulders and a developed back, ass, and chest, with visible abs.Where as men perfer larger and more musculature builds.

So if you want women, shoot for low bodyfat, and work out for about a year then just maintain that build. If you want guys shoot for 18% body fat and lift hard and always challenging yourself.

You can't make someone do something they don't want to. Best you can do is try to inspire them and if they tell you they wish they can do what you did, then you can show them how and keep up with them during their journey.
>>
>>75709944
I guess so, but he'll probably never lose the weight. I've tried motivating him in various ways, but it's like trying to move a sleeping elephant. I'll just prepare myself for him to have an early death. He's lived to 59 before one of his parents died, but I'll probably be in my 30s when he dies. Selfish fat bastard.
