Comp sci is literally one of the easiest STEM degrees you could ever get, comp sci by far. Engineers have to take classes like fluid dynamics lmao, nothing in CS comes close to that.

That's quite the answer I was looking for. It says a lot even for someone like me.

The long explanation, however, is quite a nice view into what's goes behind the finetunning process and a measure of what you are up against in it. Thanks a lot for both.

because early on with home computing a typical machine has one or two floppy drives and no hard drive. you boot your os from floppy, load your software from floppy, and save your data to floppy. by the time people were mainly saving to hard disk instead the floppy icon had already become "the save icon". plenty of programs don't use a floppy disk image for saving, but it's recognisable so there's little need to change it

Any version of Windows since 1995 has been more polished, production-ready and user-friendly than any Linux distro ever made. That's obvious to anybody who has installed both of them on the same machine.

Are Linux users just lying about their distros being a better experience than a Windows installation?

>du -b | awk '($1 > 1024*1024) && ($1 < 2048*1024)'
terminal?
A list of file names in the terminal have no use for me.

The main reason for the search is to find duplicates of webms and reaction images from the subfolders. So, If "ugly cat.webm" and "anoncat.webm" have the same size (sorted by size), then they will be next to each other. And the thumbnail will show that they are the same image. Letting me easily delete one of them without moving them around, because I need them to be in their original subfolder.

I know linux has an antidupl.net clone, but there's no solution for webms and mp4 reaction images.
>>
>>107707963
I was being cheeky, I don't have nemo so I can't test it, but wouldn't what you want be much better served by sorting by size? Which I'm sure any file manager has
If you're searching for exact duplicates you should be able to detect collisions by hashing which works on any filetype. If you want something shitty
>md5sum * | awk '{ print $1; }' | sort | uniq -c | awk '$1 > 1'
gives you all the hashes which have more than one copy. You could make a script to delete all the duplicates in one pass if it's too annoying.
But there's probably dedicated tools for this. If you want non-exact duplicates I think you need to look into fuzzy hashing
>>
>>107708009
>but wouldn't what you want be much better served by sorting by size?
I don't know what you just said. But the files are in different subfolders. I search the main folder that contains all the subfolder to detect duplicates from different subfolders.
>>
>>107708009
I get it now, you want me to load ALL the files like search webm and then sort them. But I have 13k files right now. I have a reaction image hoarding problem. I delete most of them by search filtering every now and then. But after switching to linux, I can't seem to find an efficient way just like on windows.

Is C still wortlh learning nowadays?

I'm studying CS but my uni's program only teaches you Python, Java and C++ so i figured I'd try to start learning C on my own over the winter break.

I already have a decent grasp on Python and Java and have always heard all the real enlightened big brain neProidians learn C to understand how a computer works beter since it's "close to the metal" unlike Python and Java but even starting out with Learn C the Hard Way, Zed Shaw says that C is a fundamentally flawed language and has many errors that later languages fixed into non-issues.

Should I keep going

There are still some old-ass microprocessors and microcontrollers used for miscellaneous purposes in embedded systems (such as, well, recording and displaying data from a moisture sensor or controlling the amplitude of an AC wave using a variac with a little motor shaft surrounding the variac's wiper) that only have C compilers because either the guy who made them got fired, died, or quit before the company he worked for could make him write another compiler for another language.
I'm sure they'd probably make Rust compilers for newer μCs/μPs, but I kinda doubt discontinued microprocessors from nearly 30 years ago that only continue circulating in the market because of shady Chinese sellers who aren't exactly too respectful of IP laws will ever get them.

This isn't really true. 4K Blu-Rays have been around for nearly 10 years now.

When will AI will be able to create a film as good as Forrest Gump?
>>
>>107707302

>>
Forrest Gump is not a good movie and I don´t think there´s anybody that understands that better than me. I´ve seen it over a hundred times because my parents would force me to watch it.

The whole movie is a self congratulary boomer stroke job. It had pop culture references every 10 seconds during the life times of boomers so they could say haha I remember that.

of course the protagonist is a literal retard that becomes a multi millionaire that boomers strongly identify with

if you´re not a boomer and think this is one of the best movies ever made maybe you should learn to think for yourself instead of having your opinions fed to you by boomers
>>
>>107707469
sure but it's not capable of making a movie as good as Forrest Gump, Anaconda 6, Ninja Champion, Twilight 9 or whatever yet regardless

Right about now. That movie was garbage. Anything that doesn't force shitskins and faggots into your visual field mogs it by just existing.

Forrest Gump was a *terrible* movie, so AI can do *better*, *now*.

Actually, a bash script to randomly go through a directory of existing videos and assemble randomly-picked bits into a movie length mess would be better than Forrest Gump!

The real win for VR(in it's current form) is in simulation and remote control not traditional vidya or shitty social media.
Zuck and co completley missed because of two reasons, they're chasing retail consumer tech which it doesn't fit with AND coming at it from the wrong direction, it's not about people moving more into immersive digital worlds it's about tech moving more into the real world that actualy solves a problem.
VR will always be a niche non-normie tech until robots become more integrated into society then they'll be using it mostly for work not leisure.
>>
>>107693887

>>
>>107693887
>$700
>steam index was $999
um yeah I think its safe to assume the more advanced VR headset that runs your games locally is gonna cost atleast AS MUCH as version 1
>>
>>107707411
The index had lots of custom hardware like the base stations and had good build quality
The Frame is much more cost optimized, the displays and lenses cost less to make then back then, the controllers are simpler. The additional cost comes from the CPU, RAM and UFS chip which wouldn't cost a lot if there was no bullshit market manipulation by openai
>>
>>107707669
you would be right, if there was a competitor example that costs $700-800 (other than the quest pro for $1000).
But ignoring the quest, the pimax crystal light is wired, has no battery, no OS, no passthrough, or eye tracking, similar resolution and display (but with aspheric lenses, no pancake), and it costs $860 with controllers (but the controllers are known to be worse than steam VR's tracking, and you could buy just the headset for $600 and spend a fortune on a SteamVR adapter + controllers + base stations).
I think you are underestimating how much money meta makes from kids who trick their parents to buy a $300 VR headset, for the headset to have a $10 monthly subscription so after 1 year it becomes a $440 headset.

I decided I want to hate my life and also try out a new distribution, so I installed NixOS. I do not have a specific use case for it, but I have a goal in which I am trying to give as many Linux distributions as I can a try. I'm running NixOS + GNOME.

> Any advice?
A few things:

1. Switch to flakes ASAP. Yes, they're still considered "experimental" for some godforsaken, stupidly political reasons, but they're solid and here to stay.
2. Set your system up to use the community cachix as a binary cache, especially if you're using one of the rolling release channels. It can potentially save you the effort of long compilation bullshittery because you decided you wanted to change the input of a single package.
3. Use home-manager if you want Nix to set up your dotfiles and other user configuration. You can integrate it directly into your system's NixOS configuration or keep it separate.
>>
>>107707713
>2. Set your system up to use the community cachix as a binary cache, especially if you're using one of the rolling release channels.
i haven't had this issue using unstable. only issue i have ever had was rolling rustup, which was broken anyways.
>rustup
>trannies
i was fucking around with it. fuck you.
>>
>>107707752
> i haven't had this issue using unstable
Sure, but it's not a matter of 'if', but 'when'.

At some point on the unstable channel you're going to find an issue that someone already filed in the Nixpkgs repo. Someone will make a fix, and you'll notice that it was merged into the master branch but not yet built on the unstable channels. So you might switch your channel to the master branch and all of the sudden you're building half a dozen applications from source because it has not yet been built on the official binary cache.

Then you'll realize that people are building from the master branch constantly and using the community cachix as a binary cache for that.

They have already solved this by simply changing out the electrolytes. They just need to scale it up and get it into the current battery makers manufacturing process.

Electrolyte change will massively reduce fires with lithium batteries. No major design changes are necessary either. Just change the electrolyte and you can keep on using Lithium.

Read the article, it's not that long:
https://www.cnn.com/science/new-battery-design-could-prevent-fires-spc

Though I want solid state batteries to come along as fast as possible, this solution is much cheaper and may catch on until they can reduce solid state manufacturing costs.

Anyhow this electrolyte change is a game changer for now....
