READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

>Putting a place for a keystone jack in front is such a good idea
I found the model for a mount for my modem online, and it places the modem in the middle because of how wide the modem is, so each side of the rack plate sticks out and basically floats the modem by grabbing each side with nothing underneath

The original model had a massive empty front plate with only a single keystone jack for the modem. Well, i have other stuff and wanted to conserve room and it was surprisingly easy to just cut and paste keystone jacks into the original design

Is it viable to have a fairly powerful server and use a shitty little laptop to interface with it, including remote gaming? I have shitty laptop turned server and a bit less shitty laptop I use, and my idea is to invest in a bit more powerful computer as server (and move all my services which I don't use because my sever is really shitty).
Another reason is that I want my next laptop to be a librebooted T480s, but I am worried about its compational power; however, I wonder if the idea to have it librebooted is pointless knowning that I have a non librebooted server. So can I operate a server privately assuming it is "compromised" in this sense?

How can I achieve something like pic related?
My unmanaged switch and ap can't really do vlan tagging and yet i would like to find a way to segment my network in such a way i can keep the guest and iot devices connected to the internet but with no real access to my main lan. I know i could go the subnet route and still use some firewall rules, but i'm not exactly sure how or if it's the best approach.
Anyone know i can get this done with opnsense? Any better way to get something like pic related (without buying/changing hardware I mean)?

Performance on 9070xt is not superior, in fact it's sometimes inferior than windows and rarely on par. It differs a lot from those tests. Cyberpunk on my 9070xt runs about 10% worse on cachyOS than it does on W11 24h2 (same settings and resolution, no raytracing), I even tested the meme schedulers and got not much further.

AST macros mean ecosystem cohesion is non-existent, with everybody writing their own DSLs and language subsets.

Yes, that's precisely my point. When you run a business you care about people who are potentially willing to give you their money. If they use a cheap laptop from 2016 they're probably not going to pay you anything, so if anything not supporting old clunkers is a gain, not a loss.

D is such a cool language. I am having a lot of fun writing my new hobby project in it. It's not corporate-dictated, memory-safe with an easy opt-out when needed, and retains all the cool features from C++.

Such a disgrace it never got popular and instead we got an obstructionist language with a nonsense syntax and a brutally slow compiler.

A lot of my hobby projects are written in D and I really like writing in it. What I think would benefit it though is better tooling. Especially auto-complete with auto-import. Currently using neovim with serve-d as LSP implementation and while it does some things it clearly lacks functionality.
Often times it has no idea what type an "auto" variable has. Even if it knows the type, UFCS is not supported. I wish pressing dot would suggest any kind of method that is applicable to that type (from all available functions in std or own code).
Right now I keep looking at the docs to find what I am looking for instead of doing everything in the editor.
Using IntelliJ at work really shows how much of a difference a good IDE makes.

Opposite really. I sometimes go back (Claude 1, 2 and first Opus mostly, but also 4o) just to confirm it's NOT just the rose tint.

I even have a few checkpoints set precisely to try and let the new model(s) tackle the exact same beat in the exact same story and watch them do it worse than "the original" went.

Yes, it's mostly smut. Yes it's mostly character interaction and variety and yes, I'm sure the new ones are better at the actual logic of it or maybe (not even sure here) spatial awareness (at least if it's not just 2 humans of average size).

The only other "saving grace" for the new models is that the outputs I'm comparing them to are obviously cherry picked, my favourites from back when it was feasible to autoswipe Opus at full context 200 times just to get the best result. It's possible that if that was still "normal" I could find that one golden swipe again and it'd be better, but the times have changed.

nah if you look at an old 2013 upload of the "door stuck" meme on swfchan it's much better quality than what's currently on youtube. and flv videos were absolutely raped quality back then, they're fucking mpeg 2, this is legitimately the worst case scenario comparison for a video from 10 years ago and it still wins.

screen size has nothing to do with it. a 360p video is gonna look great on a 100 feet wide screen if it's at a 360p resolution.

Except it is right in Youtube's case. 15 years ago is 2011. High Definition in PCs was already ubiquitous, and most TV sold were HD flatscreens. People made the difference between iphone videos and videos from Motorola Razr. Those videos didn't look that bad. This is a 2008 video screenshot from my videos. I don't have the original anymore cause it died on an old HDD (was already old in 2008), but I'm fairly certain the original didn't look this fucking blocky.
