/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Because I have 12+ terabytes of data and they don't make 12tb flash drives

Also I want to be able to access my stuff without using up a USB port, and from anywhere in my house from multiple devices. How often I'll actually need to do that, who knows, but I did a lot of research and I ended up deciding a DAS had too many issues.

Fedora and *buntu are for the working man

I just look at the steam stats which OS is the most used. And it seems to be Ubuntu. So I use Ubuntu.

The Mint kernel is too outdated, because it's based on the LTS version of Ubuntu. So I can't use that.
And I prefer apt above whatever the fuck Fedora is doing. Because now I can at least troubleshoot my own machine.

If you really can't remember look up what 1TB cost back in 2010. You could get 10TB HDDs for affordable money not too long ago but I guess now those times are over.

Hard disks fare better than SSDs and other flash memory. At least the bits don't fade over a few years without power. The motor bearings seizing up over decades does seem to be an issue though, and the way they're built you can't access the bearings to oil them without opening the drive and taking the platters out.
M-Disc is a better option. They can be read in any reasonable optical drive, and last 100+ years. Of course 100 years isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, and optical drives are already going out of production.
Converting the data into a visual representation like QR codes or similar and printing that on microfilm could store it much longer, so long as the microfilm is stored in good conditions. Similarly with laser etching it into blocks of glass, which is probably more durable.

Still, nothing beats the longevity or accessibility of writing it in multiple commonly used human languages and carving it into stone tablets. Long after all current tech has turned to dust and microfilm spoiled or been destroyed in fires, someone will still be able to read one or more of the languages on those tablets.

Yeah, egos have a way of muddying the thing of study. I mean at the end of the day I imagine we’re all trying to figure out whats going on. It kind of shocks me how people put the most obvious question in the back of their mind: what are we all doing here? When you frame it that way, it makes all the ego games seem funny. I can go on and on about this kind of stuff, and it’s probably why I opt to use ChatGPT, to spare others the immense volume of thoughts I have everyday that everyone else seems to put aside or can’t/won’t spare the cognitive bandwidth, who knows.

Hi /fglt/,
I'm not from this board, but over the weekend I replaced my decade-old desktop's Windows 10 with Debian 13. I'm not a developer/CompSci person and I only have a little bit of programming experience (embedded C). I haven't touched Linux since over 12 years ago when I messed around with Raspbian and Arch on a raspberry pi, and Debian on an Optiplex 755. I remember struggling with it back then, but this time it was so easy to set up that it's actually crazy. I think back then I was fixated on the idea that understanding how things worked at a lower level and doing things the hard way would help me... somehow. This time the hardest part was just moving all my old data off the computer first. Just boot from image, let the installer do its thing, select default for everything, then apt install the programs I want. There you go. It just werks.

This was spurred on by the Windows 10 thing in October, which has followed about 13 years of increasingly annoying things: That stupid smiley face in the bluescreen, quirky millennial posturing in the log-in screen, trying to force news-feeds and ads in places I don't want, the cloud stuff, and now the co-pilot stuff.

In one of the threads I was lurking, I saw someone suggest shopping around a little before settling on a distro you like. It makes sense, and I'll probably try that. I've got a laptop that's starting to feel bloated to me (even after removing all the data I want to save and uninstalling most programs, it's showing that 144G of the 250G drive is taken up by... idk, Windows components, I guess) so between these two, I'm probably going to try the five that a Google search says are the most popular: Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Fedora, and Arch. Other suggestions are welcome.

Do distros even matter much to someone like me that's not much of a developer/programmer? They share a lot of the desktop environments right?
