Is AI getting worse? It seems like it was actually usable for about 6 months and now it won't produce any usable code. Are they gimping the models to try and turn a profit?

>Monolyth retards think that microservices and the basics of cloud computing are a scam.
Why would you hate having a decoupled and redundant infrastructure. That's like begging to be sued by one of those litigious retards that sign the 99.999% uptime contracts.
19 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>106510275
Because when you run real software you want to scale it up and down based on demand. The microservices allow you to scale only the parts of the application that need scaling, as opposed to the whole monolith stack. It reduces redundancy.
Also >>106511347 is right. In reality it's mostly for encapsulating and isolating the application.
>>
>>106511870
>monolith refers to code
Wrong. That's monorepo.

>There's a middleground. just services. Split just those things that must be split. orchestrator + leaf services if you need to scale to many machines. perhaps backend + database if you sqlite isn't good enough. Having a separate watchdog running is fine too
You just described microservices you dummy. You just used a different word for the same thing.
Also no real company uses sqlite. The DB itself is another microservice you can scale.

I feel this whinge was posted because Orange Reddit has had a large number of stories and posts lately regarding de-clouding and moving back on-prem. Everything is much faster, we're talking tens to thousands of times faster than serverless. Storage can be duplicated and sent to a failover server, just in case of an outage or failure. And it's dirt fucking cheap compared to cloud.

Why don't you surf on over to that site, OP, and read why people are starting to look at serverless cloud-native garbage as wasteful. There are shit loads of posts about it now. We could explain it to you but I'd rather have you see that your whinge-posting isn't going to catch and flies here and you certainly know you're not catching them elsewhere. Nice try tho.

>>
>>106515441
Not sure about Intel but NVRAM is alive and well on MacOS. It stores everything from whether to enable the boot chime, to your language, keyboard layout, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairings so that it sets up your locale, and autoconnects your peripherals and the network in recovery mode.
>>
>>106515523
isnt NVRAM on macs like so small that its used for like volune, display resolution and other meaningless system related tasks i could give a fuck about.

Intel was working on making NVRAM in hopes of replacing DRAM as main memory but ended up giving up on project in 2022. There's no one in field actually gunning for NVRAM as a sub to DRAM currently.
>>
>>106515302
NVRAM lets a computer shut off and continue without rebooting. Intel is tied to the main OS on their chips, Windows. And that's the OS that would benefit the least from a technology that doesn't need reboots.

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet + the TrackPoint
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support

>>

My Latitude 7560 handles fucking Helldivers 2 at full tilt 1080p at around 70fps and has similar specs to some of the P workstation Thinkpad models

>Xeon w-11855 6-core
>128gb ram
>4tb Gen 4 NVME
>Quadro RTX 4000 8gb (based on mobile 3090ti so probably desktop 1080ti performance)

Just turn off Intel TurboBoost if you get something like this, it will immediately go into thermal throttle the second that shit comes on for more than 5 seconds. It has better specs and build quality than most gaymen laptops and it doesn't even have a gaymen card it's a Quadro.

T60! I have the wxga model with FireGL V5250 graphics based on the x1700 Pro, with SSD and WindowsXP and the 9-cell extendo clip battery. Shits awesome I love it, T60/T61 was peak Thinkpad, I run it with a RAMDisk set to 2gb to cut down on trim with XP and SSDs, it runs I believer Supermium for the browser and still plays CS 1.6 online and UT99 online.
>>
>>106516401
Thank you for this comprehensive reply, it's extremely helpful. It sounds like the T480 would be significantly cheaper, bordering on 1/3 the price, compared to the Clevo. I would appreciate any links, but I think what you've posted is enough to get me started. Any idea if any wifi7 cards fit? Can you think of anything tinkery that might be good for me to know in advance if I'm building one out?

my use case is mostly development, vms, and tinkering with llms (if possible), and it seems like neither machine will really do heavy gaming anyway; I need mainly a productivity machine.
>>
>>106516401
>>106517052
google AI tells me the i7 in the t480 (15w) is only 20-30% better than the Intel 255h in the Clevo--is this true? How can there be so little difference with such a huge difference in price and generation?

recruiters bitch and moan about applicants to deflect blame for being bad at recruiting. at the end of the day the recruiter's job isn't to get you a job, it's to get the company they're working for an applicant. when the companies have to throw their hands up and just import jeets because everyone the recruiter finds is incompetent so may as well just import a retard to be incompetent at 1/10th the price, the recruiter has to lash out at the body of job-seekers for not being good enough (when really, it was their own fault for vibe-checking everyone competent out of the process and solely moving forward with cert collectors, leetcoders, and other such retards who devoted their lives to gaming a system that doesnt exist)

CSAR better known as chat control is a new EU law proposing that all websites allowing user uploads implement software so that all videos,URLS,Audio and text is reviwed by an AI before it's even sent with the pourpose of stopping CSAM that will be voted on in September 12th
Similar laws in Switzerland and Ireland worked horrendously bad with the AI having a 90% false flag rate and led to events like a man being jailed for 48 hours for emailing himself naked pictures of his wife who was 4'11 that were flagged by the AI as CSAM

There's no way my country will oppose the chat control. We banned telegram once (because of football piracy of course) and even tried some age verification system like the UK but only for porn sites except way more stupid.
It had this mechanic of having a limited amount of times you could enter the website and then you could pay money for being able accessing them more. At the end it got memed to death on the whole country with some wordplay that was a mix between passport and gooning and they didn't apply it cuz they are incompetent and the idea was pretty stupid. But yeah, no doubt they will vote yes.

>I didn't have the specific Mona font you're using
I'm using the xfonts-mona package on Debian
https://packages.debian.org/trixie/xfonts-mona
But it's a bitmap font. Debian also packages a TrueType Mona font (fonts-mona), which I'm guessing is the same as the one you're using.
>nobreak-char-display
I didn't know that variable existed, that's very useful because I do need visible non-breaking spaces when I'm writing in org-mode.

Also to add to my previous post (>>106448149), I was reading the em-banner-el file and this is what it says:
;; This code is only an example of a how to write a well-formed
;; extension module for Eshell. The better way to display login text
;; is to use the `eshell-script' module, and to echo the desired
;; strings from the user's `eshell-login-script' file.

So instead of trying to modify `eshell-banner-message' every time I started a new eshell session, I ended up replacing my original code with a function that selects a random text file with ASCII art and calling that function in the login script.

I'm going to be the odd one out, most likely because I am not in the united states.
I *am* happy. I don't know why you ask in the lisp general, thought.
But relating your question to the topic of the thread, I would say I am happy to be able to experiment with an intriguing, deep, system such as is common lisp, and that even a smartphone today can run something that was night unthinkable for personal computers a some decades in the past.
(speaking of smartphones, I do not own a smartphone, which is probably one reason why I am not depressed.)
As it relates to the job market I am less optimistic. I also would like to be able to work with common lisp, and while I think there may be room for opportunity, l absolutely loathe corporate shit, the modern programming ecosystem, etc. I just have to trust I can find some niche that isn't corporate hell.
