Literally what is the downside?

There are tools that force file association even to portable applications.
>>
>>106516865
You can still do it manually through the OS, but then it's no longer portable since it saves to the registry. To me that's not an issue since I just only care about the settings & program data.

Why did intel give up on NVRAM?
6 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>106515441
Not sure about Intel but NVRAM is alive and well on MacOS. It stores everything from whether to enable the boot chime, to your language, keyboard layout, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairings so that it sets up your locale, and autoconnects your peripherals and the network in recovery mode.
>>
>>106515523
isnt NVRAM on macs like so small that its used for like volune, display resolution and other meaningless system related tasks i could give a fuck about.

Intel was working on making NVRAM in hopes of replacing DRAM as main memory but ended up giving up on project in 2022. There's no one in field actually gunning for NVRAM as a sub to DRAM currently.
>>
>>106515302
NVRAM lets a computer shut off and continue without rebooting. Intel is tied to the main OS on their chips, Windows. And that's the OS that would benefit the least from a technology that doesn't need reboots.
>>
>>106515523
PCs store UEFI settings in either battery backed RAM or flash, same as Macs do. Mac just calls it NVRAM since battery backed RAM is a type of NVRAM, just not the type being discussed here. They've also called it PRAM in the past. PCs mostly call it CMOS, after the technology the little static RAM chip it was once stored in was made with.

The discussion here is about other types of memory that read and write individual bytes fast and in unlimited cycles like RAM, but retain data when powered off like flash. Idea being if you used that instead of RAM, the machine could power off completely and then the OS could pick back up where it left off, as if it was suspended instead. And if you also replaced the disk with more of the same, you could have everything in one big address space and never have to wait for a file to load into RAM.
>>
>>106517128
why are reboots bad for windows?>>106517178
It seems like intel ended up giving up on it though they had billions of dollars going towards finding a successful candidate that would work but stopped suddenly in 2022 with no explicit reason?

Not watching all that.
C is has it's place for writing portable libraries that can be used from modern languages.
Beyond that, IDK why you would want to use it.

Headers and guards, dllexport/dllimport, typedef, long long int vs int64_t vs LARGE_INTEGER, null-termination, a bazillion build systems...
People act like C is a simple language when it has so much bloat and terrible defaults.
Is stuff like algebraic data types and generics really so scary in comparison?

Thank you for this comprehensive reply, it's extremely helpful. It sounds like the T480 would be significantly cheaper, bordering on 1/3 the price, compared to the Clevo. I would appreciate any links, but I think what you've posted is enough to get me started. Any idea if any wifi7 cards fit? Can you think of anything tinkery that might be good for me to know in advance if I'm building one out?

my use case is mostly development, vms, and tinkering with llms (if possible), and it seems like neither machine will really do heavy gaming anyway; I need mainly a productivity machine.

google AI tells me the i7 in the t480 (15w) is only 20-30% better than the Intel 255h in the Clevo--is this true? How can there be so little difference with such a huge difference in price and generation?

wifi card: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005006968877268.html (there's probably cheaper ones than this, when I ordered from that seller they were 10€ each, price is higher now)
adapter to fit a 2230 NVMe in the WWAN slot: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005006832363079.html (it's better to use that adapter with a 2230 instead of the native 2242 since you'll find drives much easier for that format)
dual heatpipe cooler: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005007532136977.html (make sure to pick the "discrete graphics" option. it'll fit even if you don't have the Nvidia GPU inside, you'll just need to put some electrical tape over the GPU plate)
external battery: https://www.ebay.com/itm/387105607116
RAM: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DGL5CWYZ (I got the 2x32GB kit, works well despite being a chink brand. they don't have it in stock anymore but you can get any DDR4 kit at 2400MHz or higher and it'll work. I have Corsairs in my A485)
>Any idea if any wifi7 cards fit?
I don't think so, keying on the card is different and I dont think it'll fit. maybe a half-height card with an adapter would but I haven't tried
>and tinkering with llms (if possible)
probably not possible on the T480, or extremely slow if it is

Take the hit and buy a new decent phone right now, keep that as your main phone for the next 8 years.
8 years is a long time, maybe a not-shit Linux phone will be half decent by then.
Unlikely given the freetard plague of sperging out over everything will kill it off due to going nuts over fucking TPMs to allow for secure apps like banking so it will be as shit as a locked the fuck down phone for all intents and purposes anyway.

Of course, it is only a matter of time before they murder Firefox which is, as far as I know, the only remaining userscript-capable browser but admittedly I haven't done a hard look.
If it needs root it is shit, so fuck off in advance, nobody is going to do that, this is exactly why they win.

I've had 3 pairs of IEMs so far. Moondrop Aria, Moondrop Chu 2 and Moondrop Space Traveler(1?). I like the sound of Aria and Chu, they're basically the same thing despite a completely different price range, not that big, but noticeable. Sadly, the quality of Aria is disastrous, they got some weird blisters underneath the paint coating in two places, also causing the paint to come off. The wireless ones sound like absolute shit but it's alright since I wasn't expecting anything else from them, I just needed a pair of earphones to use on public transport and occasionally at work.

I'm looking for another pair to try out, I prefer something on the budget side. I just want to increase my point of reference of different sounding earphones, try some new things out. Which of the budget positions in the OP would be worth checking out?

In 2018 I bought a slightly used (about a month) LG V30 for about 300 euro. I've been using it ever since, and it has met all my needs. The sound quality -- both from the built-in speakers and the 3.5mm analog output -- is excellent. It's not bulky or impractically large, and the build quality is outstanding. It looks great, offers expandable storage (to store my music), and I can still get through an entire day on a single charge.

Why can't they make anything like that anymore? I've been looking at recent flagships, and every single one feels like a downgrade -- aside from having the latest specs. There's no expandable storage; instead, they expect you to pay hundreds more for extra internal storage. And if you want to listen to music with wired headphones, you’re stuck carrying around a bulky DAC dongle.

So, what are the options in 2025? It seems like the only viable choices are the Sony Xperia 5 series or the Asus Zenfone (up to the 10th edition). But both have been discontinued, and the Xperia barely sold to begin with -- making it really hard to find one.
So, what now -- just surrender? Or am I missing something? Is there anything out there that still meets these basic, reasonable needs?

I think I'm probably gonna go for it, as I realised I don't really go anywhere I don't know, and if I do, I'm usually planning the route beforehand to check for traffic anyway. I'd add a small pocket pad and pen/pencil to that list too, as having something to jot down on is very handy. Smartphones really made us monkeys huh.

Some TLD's cannot be registered at 3rd party registrars.
Especially the 2 letter ones belonging to a country.
There might even be a policy where you have to be a resident of the country or at least have legitimate business there.
Every country can make their own rules when it comes to their TLD.

Don't know about .im though.
