>where you expect them to be (at least at the start) the same
Not at all. The only thing that must be in common between the two machines is that they run Nix and speak the Nix store protocol.
You give it a path, like /nix/store/...-program-1.0, and a destination address. It will connect to the remote store using SSH, find the recursive dependencies of the path you gave, see what's already on the remote computer, and copy anything that's not. It's kind of like rsync but for the Nix store.
By default it will copy directly from your store to the remote store. But if the remote machine has fast internet, you can tell it to try to pull from the cloud cache if it's available there, before falling back to pulling from your machine. By default it requires no internet other than the direct connection between the two machines, or you can even run your own cache if you want to speed things along, still no internet required other than the connection to that cache.
And remember that the Nix store is a content-addressed store. That means the path of myprogram on my computer and your computer will always be the same, if it's the same program, and always different if it's different.
It can be used for things like remote OS deployments, where you build a NixOS configuration and use nix-copy-closure to copy it to the remote machine, then run /nix/store/...-my-configuration/switch-to-configuration on the remote machine. Then the remote machine will run the new generation you built.
>>
>>106518128
>It can be used for things like remote OS deployments
that's what I was referring to, but thanks for the clarification
>>
>>106518057
>"do I use them"...? n-no, but it's a good thing they're there!!
yeah and fuck you. I hate having to scramble around for dev headers when I want to build something. They should be there by default and only a distro for autistic space saving and dumbfuck retards would do otherwise.
>>
>>106518165
Oh right, sorry I'm retarded. I see it now that I read your post again.
>seems less useful when you want to copy stuff between completely different computers, but based on what you said nix-bundle seems to fill that niche.
Yeah the main value of Nix is that it basically completely eliminates unneeded dependencies and solves DLL hell. It's really good for running OS-wide, but having "portable" programs bundled in tarballs/AppImages kinda kills the point of it, across many tarballs/AppImages, there will be duplicate dependencies. Since they're fully self-contained.
>>
>>106517765
I'm saying that portable apps don't really exist. If you're talking about Windows app then the developers of those apps targeted Windows knowing the libraries would be present. If they depend on something Windows doesn't ship like Qt or GTK then the app comes with tons of DLLs, which will eventually be out of date.

the difference between distributions can be pretty subtle as far as the end-user experience is concerned, if you're relatively new to linux i'd recommend trying out the different desktop environtments first (which can be done within a single distro) before committing to reinstalling a different distro.

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.

I'm going to be the odd one out, most likely because I am not in the united states.
I *am* happy. I don't know why you ask in the lisp general, thought.
But relating your question to the topic of the thread, I would say I am happy to be able to experiment with an intriguing, deep, system such as is common lisp, and that even a smartphone today can run something that was night unthinkable for personal computers a some decades in the past.
(speaking of smartphones, I do not own a smartphone, which is probably one reason why I am not depressed.)
As it relates to the job market I am less optimistic. I also would like to be able to work with common lisp, and while I think there may be room for opportunity, l absolutely loathe corporate shit, the modern programming ecosystem, etc. I just have to trust I can find some niche that isn't corporate hell.

Do you have your PSU plugged in to your CPU power connectors? Does the board have an auxiliary PCI 8-pin connector for the PCIe slots? Is the GPU connected to power with a splitter cable or something that might limit current? The motherboard shouldn't be the problem here. But maybe the GPU is expecting more power and trying to draw more from the PCIe slot.

Having to wrap structs in a typedef because C doesn't have modules/namespaces is bloat.
Writing out "long long" to get an integer that is guaranteed to be "at least" 64 bits is stupid.
stdint.h only exists because whoever created the language made a mistake; "long long" is legacy bloat.
Also, don't ignore the rest. Only midwits who have too much time think shit like header guards, API macros for switching between dllexport/dllimport, and the number of build systems are worth messing with when good languages have module systems, accessibility modifiers, and dedicated build systems.
>>
>>106517478
>Writing out "long long" to get an integer that is guaranteed to be "at least" 64 bits is stupid
stdint exists

>build systems
unity builds and bootstrapping your builds with c itself exists

macros suck but they are necessary glue to fill in the gaps, not having namespaces also sucks but the language is ancient and it’s easy to work around by just using long, organized names

>good languages
there really aren’t any. nothing is even close to as mature as c that doesn’t make fucktarded design decisions
>>
>>106517478
>Having to wrap structs in a typedef because C doesn't have modules/namespaces is bloat.
You don't have to, and I don't. I don't mind seeing 'struct' before my structures, helps remind me that it is actually a struct (or union). I typically just use typedef for things like fixed point arithmetic so I can keep track of which variables are what more easily. That's also not what bloat means, even if you did use it.
>stdint.h only exists because whoever created the language made a mistake;
or because every system is different, you don't necessarily know what your code is being run on but you might still want a specific bit length. stdint.h will take care of that for you if it's implemented (or you can make one if you know how the compiler handles it). Allowing the data length (int, long, etc.) to be flexible allows you to adjust for various systems, whether you're working on an 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit, or even a 256 bit CPU.
>Also, don't ignore the rest.
I did because headers and guards are trivial to use, dlls I almost never use, never heard of LARGE_INTEGER but looks like it's just a windows defined thing so who cares, I don't use null terminated strings (I just include the length with all my character arrays), and build systems are unrelated to C itself. An old language will eventually gather a ton of different ways to build code written in it because people are free to write their own software, and over time that accumulates.
>>
>>106518115
>I don't mind seeing 'struct' before my structures
