yeah man absolutely nothing demanding ever happens on a ‘business laptop’ no compiling projects, no running an IDE, no 20-tab browser sessions, no VMs… just opening Excel and calling it a day. truly can’t imagine how anyone could possibly exceed 8GB

What kind of office work needs 10+ tabs?
The only times I need more than that are when I was looking at porn.

I have an A285 with the Ryzen 2700U, 16GB RAM. Is there any way to allocate more than 1GB of RAM to the iGPU? That's the most I can give it in the BIOS, which is kind of shit since the Vega 10 iGPU is kinda choked by this VRAM limitation.

Thats the trend. In East Asia they have been doing it for decades. They make some putrid awful corpo slopware that has an API and then call it OpenAPI. The idiots think open just means publicly accessible.

>digital cameras are such a technological dead end that Kodak brought back Ektachrome and swung some deal with Alaris and is now offering more film direct to stills consumers and Pentax and Lomo are putting out film cameras again
I guess it shouldn't be a shocker when every "blockbuster" movie looks like ass now because it was shot on digital
>what should I buy
It's like guns 30+ years ago. There's enough stuff on the used market that I'd just go buy a nikon or a canon from the 80s or 90s. There are a bunch of cameras with hipster tax on them, like how kar98ks and garands were over priced compared to thirdie country guns, but generally anything that's mostly electronic like those 90s SLRs are free from hispter tax because hipsters generally want

Its the end result that matters no matter what a photo is shot with. Art is subjective and different cameras give a different look to a thing. I choose to pick the convenience of shooting a thousand photos and getting a few really good ones instead of dropping loads of money to get 20 shitty photos.

Apple Shocks World, Shutters All Factories to “Pursue Bold LGBT Tech Pivot”

In a surprise announcement, Apple revealed it is closing every hardware factory worldwide, citing “waning interest in devices that stop working the moment you look at them funny.” Executives admitted that solder‑sealed parts, updates that mysteriously slow older models, and an ecosystem “tighter than tim cook's ass” may have contributed.

The company will now redirect all resources into “next‑generation LGBT technologies,” a phrase no one at the press conference could define but was described as “courageous” at least fourteen times.

Apple also promised that future macOS releases will scan fewer user photos in the background—“but only because there won’t be any devices left to run them.”

Ok and? It's surveillance tech no different from phone wiretaps.
Protip: You only get "tapped" if there's a warrant for it that a judge signed off on with the full legal responsibility that entails. This isn't a communist country where the state can simply surveil anyone it wants on a whim. Though I suppose it's telling of who is actually spreading demoralization fear mongering (again). You "people" would be familiar with living in a corrupt slave state.
>>
>>108497976
>This isn't a communist country where the state can simply surveil anyone it wants on a whim.
Not exactly. Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which expired in 2020:
>The FBI does not even have to show a reasonable suspicion that the records are related to criminal activity, much less the requirement for "probable cause" that is listed in the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. All the government needs to do is make the broad assertion that the request is related to an ongoing terrorism or foreign intelligence investigation.
https://www.aclu.org/documents/surveillance-under-usapatriot-act
There's a bunch of caveats to that, though. Ongoing investigations did and probably do confer the power to continue surveillance and launch new ops.
If you think they stopped after that, I have a bridge to sell.

Hi, I’m mainly a Mac user for work, and I only use Windows on my gaming PC at home.

My work involves low level software analysis and reverse engineering, and recently I’ve been doing a lot more work with Windows based tools. Transferring files from my M2 Mac to a crappy Dell Latitude using an external SSD is getting really annoying and time-consuming.

So I’m looking to pick up a ThinkPad as a dedicated Windows work machine. so I’m currently deciding between a T480 and a T14 Gen 2 (Intel).

From what I’ve seen, the T14 Gen 2 has Thunderbolt 4 and newer hardware, but the T480 is cheaper and more upgradeable.

For my use case (RE, tooling, moving large files, etc.), which one would you guys recommend? Any downsides I should be aware of?

Neat. I'm wondering what I should do with mine. I wonder if I can utilize its 64gb of ddr4 for some LLMs or something. Ever since I got my M4 I've been using that and my thinkpad has been collecting dust
>>
>>108499997
>Unless you’re a journalist or activist who’s actually being targeted, it’s overkill

Ohh your naivety, or maybe I should say... carelessness, amazes me.
In my industry (chemical engineering) we even have regulations on the hardware architecture to use for certain computing devices (could be a part of a chemical plant or, say, an engineer's laptop if important work is processed on it).

Not all my devices are coreboot but I sure as hell would not use a random consumer device for something important. Industrial espionage is a thing.

oh wow, industrial espionage in a regulated chemical engineering environment yeah, that totally sounds like the average guy buying a ThinkPad for coding and browsing.

you’re basically saying ‘in my highly specialized, policy heavy industry we have strict hardware rules,’ and somehow stretching that into ‘everyone should care about coreboot and ME.’ like yeah no shit, if you’re working with sensitive plant systems you follow regulations that’s not exactly a shocking revelation.

meanwhile the rest of us aren’t handling state secrets or chemical plant controls on our laptops. acting like every random dev or student needs that level of paranoia is just overkill.

and calling that “naive” is funny ecognizing different threat models isn’t naivety, it’s just basic common sense. USE UR BRAIN BEFORE REPLYING
