READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Yes, the files are untouched and thus have p2p typical naming with codec, source, etc.
As do *.FLAC and *.MP3 though, this is what trips me off
.>>107723863
Mhh, this sounds like a possible solution especially since I wanted to set up sonarr anyway.
But usually I like to only have one construction site open and having to be dependent on another program, sux.
>>
>>107723770
>Otherwise I just go back watching via NAS share
Just keep doing that if that's an option. Jellyfin is only really worth it if watching from regular shares is impossible or impractical or you need transcode or account control or whatever.
>>
>>107723770
Have you tried the other metadata providers?
>>
are these weird TexHoo-MiniPCs from AliBaba decent as a first home server? Or should I go for a second hand dell/thinkpad mini pc? I just want to spin up a few containers, play around with kubernetes, maybe install OPNSense
>>
What's the most affordable way to run OPNsense? I was thinking some Intel NUC from aliexpress.

What are some memorable experiences you had regarding tech in school? I’ll start
>switch n and m keys on a keyboard in keyboarding class
>sperg kid sits there, looks down at the keyboard and almost immediately begins flipping out
>ancient teacher and tard wrangler lumber over to inspect
>they murmur together for a moment
>teacher says the keyboard must be defective, unplugs it, and throws it away
>waddles off to get a new keyboard from a supply closet
>mfw
Also, later that year
>write Visual Basic scrip that causes the CD tray to continuously open and close
>runs as a background process, and task manager was disabled on school PCs, so it’d keep going til you rebooted
>I am le 1337 haxx0r
>put file on a flash drive, bring it to school
>copy file to the desktop
>realize that it’d be funnier to make people cause it to happen, rather than automatically running

I can't recall renaming the file to have worked. WinRAR was the winner. I got to play whatever I could fit on a 2GB USB such as Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey. I had tried running a pirated copy of Portal on one of 'em but I couldn't get it to launch. Playing something else other than whatever flash games slipped through the internet filter was cash money.

I was dropped from my high school intro programming class and had to sit in study hall the rest of the year after writing programs to flip peoples screen upside down, bypass restrictions, abuse `net send`, and that sort of nuisance

Incredibly shitty spelling, curious use of terminology, and a very professional choice of font.

If that's actually real, then not being in them classes saved you from lasting damage.

Best mechanical numpad that is reasonably low-profile and can be placed in a bag without worrying about keycaps falling off?

what kinda cheap shit have you been using

keychron K0 max if you want bluetooth and the slim form factor is vital
meletrix zoompad if you want bluetooth but dont mind if its thicker
and then for thin and wired, closest i can think of the niz plum, which isnt all that thin but its not super raised either

prohibitive cost of entry
same reason why there are only 2 commercial airplane manufacturer, 2 graphics card makers, 2 mobile OS, 3 browsers, 2 cloud providers etc etc etc

you would need trillions in funding and decades to even start to compete
nobody is willing to invest in something like that

this is the same reason why the AI rush is happening btw
once the bubble pops, the 2 or 3 established players will dominate the market forever
>>
>>107725957
this is the reason btw why China is the only one willing to try
China is not bound by the will of the free market as much as the West

they are willing to take losses in the present to secure a better future, something the West is unable to do
if someone tried to do it in Western Capitalism he would get devoured by the free market beast
>>
>>107725980
Good for them.
They also have the man power of work on different, but interrelated sectors simultaneously and make progress.
As it should be.
It's dangerous for a certain type of tech to be concentrated in just one country, where the government of that country have the power to essentially decide which regions in the world are allowed to use that tech and which aren't.
>>
>>107725980
>they are willing to take losses in the present to secure a better future
Corrected: "The handful of psychopathic tyrants running the whole thing don't care about burning money because slave labor is virtually unlimited and the possibility of becoming even richer and continue to enjoy forcing locals into cruel socialist poverty for another 100 years sounds to good a deal to pass on"

Many political strategists believe the optimal window for China to annex Taiwan is around 2026-2027. Perhaps Sam Altman had prior knowledge which lead to his decision to order 40% of the global RAM supply (raw, uncut wafers that can be warehoused) in preparation of the enviable. As this order is being fulfilled tech companies will be forced to develop non-Taiwanese supply chains immediately. In the end result OpenAI would have the world's largest reserve of critical AI infrastructure components.
>>

>forced to develop non-Taiwanese supply

How, precisely?
how in your little head do you work out this results in OpenAI gobbling the infrastructure everywhere that isn't taiwan and more importantly, why would this annex taiwan??
