My car was stolen, and I have no means of tracking or finding it. Cops where called, but my work stuff was in it, including my laptop. I don't have Google find me on it, the only thing I can think of using is Tailscale. I installed it a while ago for streaming reasons. It's still on the network, but not on. Last time it was on was yesterday, but before it was stolen.

Can I use Tailscale to find my laptop? Geolocate, or find an IP to then trace? I am an idiot, and I'm at my wits end.

But the AI slop is right that you shouldn't go try to go after thieves. That's common advice I saw on the internet. Chances are they'll just shoot you if you turn up there. And the police is also not THAT interested in property theft either.
Best you can do is maybe find out the IP address, then give it to the authorities. They might be able to check who / where the IP is.

Also those tools will only work if the thief turns the laptop on.

If you do somehow get access to the laptop, most likely the laptop has no GPS to find the location. Instead, I'd recommend checking what wifi networks are nearby and how strong the signals are. Then authorities can use the nearby wifi networks to locate it very precisely and they might have enough reason to search someone's home (I don't know that for sure though).

This situation sucks now, but in maybe 2 years you won't think about it anymore, time heals all wounds etc., wishing you good luck Anon.

I use KDE and I honestly wish it was better.
It constantly fails to show paired stuff and I usually have to restart it on both devices before sending files. I use it on Windows (desktop + laptop) and android (pixel + chinkheld).
