I purchased this recently for $2000. Was it a good decision? It was on sale, the best specs I could find for the price and form factor. It has a fit and finish approaching a modern MacBook (although a slightly thicker design, but not much) and it can run all muh games at ultra settings at 120 fps or above. More importantly, I think it'll be good for tinkering with LLMs and for productivity. I may dual boot Linux on it.Battery life is okay at around 6 real world hours on battery with minimal tweaking (using the integrated graphics only), and in performance mode it really does run quite well.I have a week to return it, though. Thoughts? Can I do better for the same price or less without sacrificing anything big? My other laptops include an old MBP and a ThinkPad x220.specs:3k 120hz OLED display with G-Sync (looks great in static images, does not particularly impress me in motion)AMD 9 HX 3705070 Ti (laptop), I think it's slightly underpowered to fit in such a small chassis, but I don't really know any better and it's still the most powerful GPU I've ever used, I think.good speakers, decent keyboard, overall just a nice build.
>>106522661>all things but one. why 14 inchWell, look at the alternative: >>106519734It is a giant, ugly/childish-looking machine. It is more powerful, with the trade-off of being a desktop replacement or something more akin to a mobile workstation. The G14 can serve as a true laptop when you're not gaming on it, while that simply can't. It's still portable and such but it's very different. I'm open to a desktop replacement, but only if it offers a lot more, which that really doesn't. I've seen some Razr models that are larger but still portable, but they have poor longevity according to reviews.>Better cooling and batteryThe 16" above has worse battery life, and while the cooling is better, all that matters in practice is that it's sufficient for the thermal package. The Zephyrus 16" but it's $3500-4500 new and also has some trade-offs>>106523442A desktop is still much more powerful, but mobile GPUs have come a long way.

>>106519440>Was it a good decision? No.>Can I do better for the same price or less without sacrificing anything big?Yes, with a Macbook.Crippled x86 machines in laptop form factor are an outdated meme.

Left is perfectly readable. The benefits of functional languages aren't short map reduces like that, it's not having global state or state that's shared by multiple objects at least.People always focus on the syntax of those toy examples, just use imperative code inside a function and make the function itself pure if you can.

You know how annoying all AI's are. Is there a way to access or tweak existing AI to be more normal and unbiased ? Not sure if I want to go into dark web because of what I heard it's mostly just viruses and malware. I'm aware companies can't provide a product that can be harmful for some. And I really enjoyed first few months of chatgpt. But I grew sick and tired of it trying to compliment me every message. Is there N-18 Ai where you can agree to terms that can it can be harmful and can use it anyways ?

Technology is rapidly regressing.Windows 10 took away the analog clock.Windows 11 took away the second. There is no built in way in Windows 11 to see the second. It's not in the start menu. It's not in the clock app. It's not in the notification area. It's not in the calender that opens form the notification are when you click on the clock. You have to install a 3rd party app or open a webpage to see the second.

>>106509944I am not saying AI is having no impact. What I am saying is that the desicions made by companies and institutions that are downsizing or reducing because of AI were doing that same thing prior but with significantly less intensity. Slopification doesn't feel like AI's fault as much as the most strwight line companies are choosing to take. I understand how it sounds>guns don't kill people, people just use guns to do it. You can kill with other methods, but this just the simplist and most streamlinedBut I draw this line because I do apprecaite the technology of AI a lot. There is so much good it does and I would hate for us to lose that through legislation or social stigma. Honestly you can bully Microsoft and Google to get that shit out of here, that's fine. It appears academia and big tech have thrown the baby out with the bath water and will recieve their comeuppance sometime in the future, but what that will do is affect costs being altered for us consumers just like tarrifs, the GPU market fuckery, bird flus killing chickens and everything else.
>>106524129This is probably the right path. We are lost because the role of solid interns and journeymen and interns mean jack shit. I have interns from high schools assigned to me every year and I try to teach them the imporant parts of everything I do here, but I just don't see people treating their interns like that. My coworker, a carpenter, will also be easy to give coaching and teach his underlings, but these seems to be our choices rather than the focus of having the intern. I get that Im working for a buisness but damn they really throw these kids to the wolves, if I were an even lazier man who didn't care at all these guys wouldn't learn a single thing.
I like how they simply can't be honest and say "our new engineering dynamic is a legion of 'junior level' Indian shartware developers being supervised by the white American senior plantation overseers."
