Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice on bare metal and run your previous OS in a Virtual Machine.
2) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Does this issue also happen with regular bubblewrap?

I'm a guy in my mid-40s who's dabbled in Linux had a very scratched the surface kind of way. I've got a bunch of old laptops and one old desktop unit, I mean like this stuff is like 10 to 15 years old. What would you guys recommend for learning how Linux works? I know there's distros like Linux Mint I can throw on these old machines and then they'll run but I never felt like I knew what the fuck was going on under the hood. What's the best way to learn that? I thought about using AI so that I can bounce questions off it for things I don't understand.

What do you think guys?
>>
>>106541204
You could use distrobox instead for packages not provided by your package manager or out of date since its more or less a chroot preconfigured without requiring much user input aside from installing packages and whatever chroot related settings needing to be set.
But you should just use flatpak whenever you want or need to, not use flatpak for EVERYTHING. E.g i use flatpak for steam and wine since they're easier to deal with than native packages

>using only 15GB of extra space for 100 different applications is too much
I completely agree when it comes to small systems, like sbpcs or cheap handhelds. But on a random person's desktop or laptop worrying about this makes no sense. Less than 2% of people have under 128GB of internal storage and only they would have to worry.
>Last time I tried flatpak, some programs would install different "branches" of the same libraries, because one of the programs would update its dependencies pretty quickly, while others didn't
That's exactly how all software development works and fighting against this was the reason Linux was never a serious desktop OS until recently when flatpaks/appimages took off.
If you force developers to update dependencies, or even worse if you offload that work to distro maintainers (assuming the software is open source at all), you just get buggy software or you don't get software at all. Not to mention sometimes people explicitly want to run abandonware or infrequently updated software. And by the way, almost all proprietary software bundles dependencies into it's binaries. So unless you're a total freetard control freak, you're going to get "bloat" no matter what.
Flathub at least tries to fix this issue by forcing developers to use runtimes no older than one or two versions behind the latest.

>>106544489
From my (very limited) testing, software running inside distrobox performs slightly worse than flatpak.

So, I used diskpart to nuke the HP_RECOVERY partition, did a few other things. For funsies, I used Partition Wizard to disk copy from the working SSD to a 64 GB SDXC card via a USB 3 adapter. Took some time, but resized nicely. Then disk copied back from SDXC card to old, repurposed 128 GB SSD.

Boot checked from the new copy SSD & system barfed at BIOS. Per pic related what it looks like with just the two SSDs on the system, and booted from the original that still has the factory recovery partition. Win decided to attach drive letters to some of the new partitions on the new SSD, so disk manager and removed drive letters. Shut down, pull all drives off and reattach new SSD without recovery partition, boots perfectly.

Played with the system a little bit to see if anything obvious broke, doesn't seem to be, although still too soon to say definitely. However, I really like using diskpart for the dirty work because the remote possibility of dicking the registry or something is largely eliminated since windows itself performed the operation.

Also did a diskcopy with PartWiz from the new SSD to a spare 64 GB USB 3 flash drive. I happen to have about 20 or 30 (including SDXC) around the place not doing anything since I have larger & newer data storage options since 8 or so years ago. Really comfy having two or three backups taped inside the case of each PC that I can revert to when Thing Go Wrong.

I sleep now. Been a couple days. Tanks for being /g/bros and all around good /g/uys. I be doing other weird shit in the coming months. C'ya all around.

Researching into the insanity of the modern job market and how deep it goes, all I can ask is a simple "Why"? Why is the stock prices of a company worth more than the products/services they provide? Why should an individual's purchasing power be lowered when they are the ones to purchase the products? Why can companies get away with literally offering no product or service and get away with evaluation? Makes no sense to me because it is very short sighted thinking.
>>
>>106544153
What you're seeing is the twilight of capitalism and the dawn of something worse.

We don't build things anymore, large companies simply pay someone else because it's cheaper, this would mean fewer jobs for local consumers but that can't happen because then there wouldn't be enough consumers to buy the products being sold. So instead we were flooded with useless busy work jobs that don't really matter.

As a result of this companies shifted from providing a service to increasing shareholder value by any means necessary. Using automation to replace jobs, flooding services with ads to increase revenue and performing mass lay offs. Ordinarily companies would be worried that there'd be no consumers left to buy from them, but they found a solution. Market their few remaining services to the ultra wealthy and for everyone else; normalize going into debt for buying ordinary goods and services.(There's a reason Uber eats lets you pay for your food through Klarna)

been trying to upgrade from an old office monitor for some time now and all three of the new monitors iv tried nothing looks really black just dark grey

so far all 3 that iv tried are IPS so im thinking i should try a VA since i dont want to spend for an OLED

Save your shekels for a decent OLED, and then keep doing it so you can replace it when it burns in.
>>
>>106543478
Iv considered some of the OELDs for around 500$ but im worried they might not last more than 2 or 3 years because of burn in
>>
>>106543296
I had a VA monitor once. The black smear was bad enough to make me swear off VA panels for eternity.

>>106543478
I don't think OLED burn in has been solved yet for desktop monitors being used daily with static elements. Maybe if you have a dedicated OLED monitor for multimedia it's fine but otherwise I wouldn't risk it.

For me, doing mostly productivity work on my monitors with static elements all day every day it seems IPS is still the only option, even though it has its downsides like bad contrast (which I'd take over black smearing or burn in any time)
