A friend of mine who games on PC but has zero interest in tinkering recently asked me if SteamOS was something he could put on his computer instead of Windows. This is someone who has never opened a terminal in his life, and he's actively looking into alternatives due to the state of Windows.

Normies are getting fed up with Microsoft's shenanigans and Linux becomes more of a viable alternative for every usecase each year. I actually hope Microsoft keeps making these horrible decisions and updates.

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualisation. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavour of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

I'd use it. There was a reason why I wasn't going to switch but I forgot what it was.
>>106979117
I used kde neon for a long af time until they did an upgrade to version 5 i think it was and they broke literally fucking EVERYTHING. Even when I switched to opensuse tumbleweed kde had broken shit. The only reason they changed from KDE neon to kde linux is because loads of fucking people were pissed they broke everything and fucked peoples system up. On the KDE Neon site it even said DAILY DRIVER or whatever it was. Until they removed that and just said it was a a test platform only. Which was a load of fucking shit. I like KDE a lot but that was bullshit BUT at least on the forums people were still nice unlike the other 999% of open source where they'd just gaslight your ass to the end so they'd never take the fucking blame. The guy who managed neon at least apologized as well.

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet + the TrackPoint
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support

sorry maybe confusing.

'echo $HOME' to see if it correctly gives you your homedir

if it does, then you can use >>106978368
without modification.
if not, just replace $HOME with the actual home dir.
make sure "bin" exists in home dir and then do "ln" with your dirs
>>106978336
then log out and in
you can probably just "source ~/.profile" insead of logging out

obviously, i was thinking on a larger scale, to make a folder with a lot of data accessible accross the whole system (for other users), not just a single user setup.

otherwise, yeah, your way works ez.
plus you can add a . in the file name to make it hidden.

but if you want a program with a lot of loose files like OP mentioned, putting the folder in the /usr/bin folder would be better (for a system wide install)

Eric has failed us, he has literally one job, and that is to provide 25 puzzles, per year, on schedule. Now it's only a 12 day challenge, how can you even call that "advent" of code, which is supposed to count down to Christmas. I am outraged, and you should be too. What if Santa's elves just decided to stop making half the toys??? Ridiculous.

>Also, starting this year, there will be 12 days of puzzles each December.

>Why did the number of days per event change? It takes a ton of my free time every year to run Advent of Code, and building the puzzles accounts for the majority of that time. After keeping a consistent schedule for ten years(!), I needed a change. The puzzles still start on December 1st so that the day numbers make sense (Day 1 = Dec 1), and puzzles come out every day (ending mid-December).

I feel like if someone who was even moderately capable had put in as much effort and time into something as much as he has they would have done something meaningful now.

What has he done? Made a mediocre video game and write a language that doesn’t meaningfully change the landscape?

He also berates his employees on livestreams whenever they wrote something in a way he doesn't like, simps for billionaires, and talks about a testosterone crisis in the world when he sounds like your average San Francisco queer with the whiniest voice ever.
