NAS Case Guide. Feel free to add to it:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server/Case_guide

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualisation. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavour of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

I'd replace the batteries asap. Make sure you get the dimensions right and choose a LiFePO4 equivalent with HMS protection (HMS protection is incredibly important and makes it a compatible replacement for UPS systems).

LiFePO4 batteries will be both lighter, last longer, and usually have more amps (longer runtime)

>using it for my n150 mini pc, router and modem, possibly a rpi4
>should be able to last an hour or so, i think.
If you make my suggested replacement I'd guess it would last at least an hour and 45 minutes. My UPS had 4x 12v 7amp SLA batteries and I replaced them with 4x 12v 10amp LiFePO4 w/ HMS batteries.

My UPS keeps my firewall/router, modem, 3 tiny 8 port switches, a bananapi r3 mini, a dell optiplex mico (i7-7700T cpu), my wifi AP, Security NVR, Eufy security appliance, and a PoE injector powering 4 PoE IP cams operational for 3 hours on critical failure. This 'Critical Load' is 1.24 A / 110 W / 150 VA
You are powering much less with a smaller UPS but I think you'll be incredibly satisfied with your operational time on battery

Is dns over https something I should give a shit about in a home server?
currently collides with my reverse proxy ports so would need to buy separate device for adguard
>>
>>106994197
set up DNS filtering and use a DNSoH upstream resolver. then redirect all DNS queries on your network forcibly to your local filtered DNS resolver with iptables.
>>
>>106994372
so am I supposed to expose adguard with 53, set upstream to something like https://dns.quad9.net/dns-query , assign dns ip via router and thats it?

Sorry sweetie, but I've got a backlog of over 1000 indie and non-indie games to go through. And a ton of TV series to watch. And a huge side project to work on. Besides, I don't really like kids and I'd probably be an anti-natalist if I weren't a permavirgin incel.

How the hell did people learn to code before AI? Did they actually read all the documentation or what the fuck? Getting info for something specific you need in a project is a pain without reading all the docs for every tool you use.

For my hobby projects I never used the docs that much, except for the most critical or fundamental parts.
Usually I would get a broad overview from some video, the have some tutorial open and try stuff. There was also obviously google and stack overflow.

Welcome to the 4chan /g/ Usenet General Thread!

>What is /usenet/?
Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on (http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). Not owned by corpos, not under govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection. They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed by all.
Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like rss, irc, http, usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards. Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.

>WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, impossible to take down.
Today it is split between, binaries and text. The binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and abandoned, until now.

>WHY POST ON USENET
It's open protocol, you can use any client you want or build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP, or through eternal-september.org. Then you just need to install a client.

My manic episodes always involve code. in 2009. I was having visions of an algorithm that I did not know how to write yet. 2017 was all about recursion and then 2022 was all about shell scripting. You do not want to see the script that I wrote right before I went to the psych ward. I can’t share it here because I’d get arrested.
