>hiring people instead of paying another company to do it is not a clear cut win.
The problem with that argument is that teams don't shrink because they move over to AWS or some other cloud provider. They just manage AWS instead and work on optimizing the cloud bill. AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure are very shady. They make it so hard to "optimize" your cloud bill that there's an ecosystem of "AWS consultants" working on this. And they all recommend AWS of course, it's one big grift.

So you go from running your own servers and having control of your own data without being locked into some proprietary software to.....having the same amount of people + maybe hiring some AWS consultants and being locked into long expensive contracts and high egress fees. And the internet is a lot less fault tolerant because of all of this. No one has benefited from it except from the rent seekers aka AWS and the lot.

>managing a db is actually difficult despite what you say.
It's a lot easier than optimizing your AWS bill and it's not that hard. I've done it for years. Problem is young people have no idea what they're doing because they have been brainwashed by cloud propaganda.

>aws's profit margins are at ~30%. that' not very profitable. hetzner doesn't publish their earnings but will likely have a similar profit margin.
They make a lot of money from selling a commodity product. They make a lot of money because they lock in their customers and so they can't switch easily, not because their product is actually good. I don't know what Hetzner makes but I'm sure their margins are much lower because they don't have the same lock in.
>>
>>107007322
Yet somehow when you tell IT they can't use AWS they crap themselves and start screaming for mommy Amazon.
>>
>>106989351
Wait a while and that feeling will pass.
>>
>>107007393
There's a trend of companies switching to on prem. They save a lot of money doing that. There's a lot of people that have a financial interest in pushing AWS though, because it's what they know and they have spent a lot of time getting all the different certifications. They don't know how to manage servers. They only know how to navigate AWS and their different expensive proprietary services. Those sort of people will shit themselves about switching, but that doesn't mean that AWS is good. This is an old playbook that Microsoft has used as well. Both Microsoft and Amazon have slop products but they have good business because they can lock in customers and overcharge them.
>>

>They don't know how to manage servers. They only know how to navigate AWS and their different expensive proprietary services. Those sort of people will shit themselves about switching, but that doesn't mean that AWS is good.
it's not quite fair to undervalue these people though, because what you describe can get very complex. i remember seeing some dude on a laptop in AWS like 10 years ago in a plane, he was definitely skilled.
im saying there is value in knowing how to 'fiddle' with everything and get it all working, it's how you'd get a job/what you'd do on the job anyway.
you cant blame these individuals really, its a business issue from up top, wanting to cut costs.

Oh no, It's hard to go to device manager and install drivers for devices that have warning sign on it. It's soo hard, I will shit my pants, because I need to do something myself. There is literally zero new features that new windows have aside from installing drivers for you. I would take that "hassle" over bloat. Newer windows need more tinkering to make it less bloated and not spy on you than installing drivers ever was.
>>
>>107000077
Never thought you zoomer retards would be so quick to imprint on the fucking Start screen, a disaster so bad that Microsoft backpedaled on it after 8.1
>>
enshittification started in 2OoO
>>
>>107007263
Do I really need to list all the ways in which XP sucks? It was trivial to break and most programs ran with full access to system files.
Vista was a massive step up and 7 is just Vista with a service pack and enough time for the hardware to catch up and the drivers to be polished.

>>107007273
It depends, but all CRTs need to get nice and toasty to get the best picture.
Geometry seemed to be easier to manage for smaller screens, but the 22" I had needed a lot of tweaking to get the best results - >>107004860
Some of the cheaper ones didn't offer all the necessary controls and you could never get them quite right and they would lose their settings for a specific resolution/refresh rate after changing the mode.
Higher end ones like the Mitsubishi even came with software to let you adjust everything with a GUI instead of the buttons on the monitor, it's quite neat.
I wouldn't keep the monitor if I didn't like it of course, I'd have sold it for way too much to some zoomer otherwise.
But they are finicky and people who say otherwise just didn't care enough to try and get the most out of their CRTs back in the day.

I got a Tuta account after getting the app from f-droid and was using it every day and liked it even though it has some poor interface design and you can't use IMAP without giving shekels.

Then I sent my personal friend that I was having a conversation with an email with 2 JOOTUBE links in it and his email provider which is his web host bounced it as SPAM (yes, BASED, fuck JOOGLE/JOOTUBE). After the bounce notice came back the TUTAJOOS locked me out of my account (yes, BASED, fuck allowing people to spread JOOGLE/JOOTUBE). It logged me out on two devices and said my login credentials are invalid, and the recovery code didn't work either.

Since free accounts get no support you have to give shekels but even regardless of that you have to always worry that you're going to lose access to all of the accounts everywhere else you have with the TUTAJOOS as your email address.

FUCK THE TUTAJOOS
>FUCK THE TUTAJOOS

Hopefully this will save someone from getting themselves fucked by the TUTAJOOS.

I know most of /g/ will probably have differing opinions on this, but this era of Microsoft was really the only time I felt like they were actually putting consumers first rather than businesses or other things. It was also the only era, in my opinion, where they were being bold in there choices and if they had just stuck with this, I think we'd all have been a lot happier.
>>
That’s just your nostalgia. Windows as an end-user product has always been hot garbage.

Having a random port open on which a single application listens (your torrent software) is not a big deal imo. There is a slight risk your torrent software can be exploited but usually that would only happen if you use the port for some kind of server, not just torrenting.

I see a dozen Windows Vista and 7s at work every day used by babyboomers and they never have any noticeable security issues other than they themselves literally installing junk with popups intentionally.
If they get "hacked" it's just social engineering making them do every single step of a wire transfer or creating a whatsapp account to get their passwords changed by the random indian.
Not a single scenario would be prevented by having a fully updated OS.

So, what issues are actually affecting people in an old OS like Windows 7?

Just installed 4chan XT on Firefox after X stopped working. 50% of the time, the Captcha won’t load. The other 50%, it takes about 30-40 seconds to load. When I try to post, it greys out for another 30 seconds and then says upload failed. Any ideas? I went through the settings and everything seems fine.

Funny enough, I can post using 4chan X with Chrome on my phone.

You can only run things on the drive when it's decrypted. So you would need to mount and decrypt everytime you want to run whatever it is you need. If it's a program that needs to run before decryption, it won't work.

Once decrypted, the drive works as a normal drive. You can definitely use repos with venv.

Slowdowns are noticeable on older drives especially. Newer ones still some slowdown but not as bad as HDD's

So far it's been a failure... I made the bootable USB drive with Rufus, but apparently the PC is too old for the default bootable settings (something about UEFI), so I have to remake it...
It doesn't help that Win 10 is trying to install an update every time I reboot it... I thought updates were done? wtf
Also, sometimes it boots up to the desktop for 5 seconds then hard crashes. I'm hoping an OS reinstall will fix that......
