Is PC repair a profitable side gig?
People seem pretty fucking stupid when it comes to their computer, but eletronics seem to be less and less serviceable each year.

If you can do board level repairs you'll be able to get a job as a test engineer and make tons of money doing far more fulfilling work.
>>
It was barely viable 15+ years ago, nowadays even less so.

Fewer people own full desktop PCs/workstations at home now. Most are on tablets, phones, or less frequently laptops.

If you're somehow in a magic location where there's no large retailers selling pre-built and offering servicing, but you somehow also have enough population around to make it feasible, and you ALSO don't already have 5 other neckbeards trying to operate the same service alongside you, then sure you could give it a go.
>>
>>108560252
No. Don't even try. If you are skilled and want a side gig go with something more practical that scare normies like setting up security cameras or car audio or drone surveys etc.

You'll get much more mileage out of learning about legal frameworks and rules for things like warranties and contracts than anything technical.

If you insist on PC repair save yourself some time and just start eating out of the garbage can right now.

Maybe it will actually benefit India? Might as well be a huge mistake to invest that much human resources to just do software for other countries.
India had a huge inner market for a long time. People might not be very reach and would not pay you much for services. But eventually you can change it if you try. Organic growth is when people start making a bit more money -> spend a bit more money -> diversity of products and services on the market increase -> more jobs -> etc.
There is no magick trick to fix a country. You can't just learn to code and you're done. So yeah. Maybe India is actually superpower confirmed in 2030 or smth. More like 2040 or 2050, because all the time wasted on writing and compiling Java code.

My issue is that when you update your receiver you'd have to buy all the licenses all over again.
Right now I'm considering between a Denon 3800H and an Onkyo RZ50 which has the basic Dirac Live license included. I was originally aiming for the 4800H but their price exploded a few months ago.
>>
>>108564924
Yeah it sucks. That said, generally processors/receiver last a long time and the technology doesn't change that much. Arguably the only thing that really has changed recently making upgrades worthwhile would be Dirac support. I tend to keep processors a while, they generally aren't worth an upgrade as improvements are so incremental.
>>
>>108564971
I'm afraid the AV receiver industry is dying as a result.
>>
>>108564996
It's a problem, hopefully they hang on for a while. I work in integration and our mid level business is pretty soft, the theaters we sell now are very expensive and using Storm processors and amps. I just did one that used a Marantz AV10 (arguably for smaller rooms I'd rather use than the Storm) but that's still expensive. I use still Denon for media rooms and such. But, something to be said about the K-shaped economy taking over, at least in custom install world.

Denon Marantz have been bought and sold a bunch too, last it was some medical company, now I think someone else owns them I can't even keep up.

Will humanity ever get rid of the 8-bit H.264 cockroach video codec? Also why didn't 10-bit H.264 (still inferior to 10-bit AV1) become a thing?

10-bit H.264 requires special hardware. If they did not care about compatibility, the codec would have been abandoned ages ago.

I have a son now and he's going to need his own room soon, which is now my office, so I'm converting a 5.5'x5.5' hallway closet into an office. Going to use hanging wall racks (I need like 16U of rack space for work stuff) and just deal with less space. Hopefully it's not too tight but it is what it is.
>>
>>108564705
That's going to be hot af. Make sure you focus on ventilation before all the other things (like two wall sconces) you'd be better off with a lighting strip in the shelving.
>>
>>108565018
Thanks, that gray box with the slats is the HVAC getting run to it. Like a 4" duct. Also the pocket door can be open most of the time, maybe for a call or something I'd close it if my kid is watching cartoons. I'll look into some light strips thanks! The sconces might get in the way anyways.

It didn't exist for long but ZON was the brand HeatoN (e-sports CS dude from Sweden) created and sold. Actually high quality stuff, less aimed at gamer kids and more aimed at adults looking for quality without paying for premium prices for big brands. Both keyboard and mouse is the same brand. It only ran for about 3-4 years but they have a pretty big fan base here in Sweden.
