I hate the shitty threads you people make.
I want to share what has opened my eyes, for other novices like me, who are trying to leave Winslop 11.

This thread is supposed to put you on the right track to making your own decision,
after reading this thread the fog of Linux won't be there anymore,
you will know what you want and you will find the distro that is suitable for you.

> 1. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg
This old image includes 95% of all Linux distros in existence, study this.

Studying this image alone, is going to help you see through idiotic arguments like "mint is better" or "go with arch" or "go with pop_os" -- most of them have a parent OS.

> 2. Distro arguments are pointless. #1 choice that you must make is what family Linux do you want and pick.
If you studied image above, you will see there distinct few families of Linux, the relevant ones are: Debian, Fedora, Arch.

Good idea, but it's too many words. A general needs to be shortened to single post, composed of only a few small paragraphs or links. You have good info but are ranting and it is overwhelming. I suggest you make something like this:

"In the GNU/Linux world there are three main branches, each with their own package manager and community. They are: Debian (apt), Arch (pacman), and Red Hat (dnf-rpm). Though there are also various and semi-popular independent distros such as Alpine, Nix, and Gentoo."

Some of Debian's popular forks include
>Mint*
>MX Linux
>Pop OS*
>Zorin*
>AntiX

Me personally, I installed my arch system on my steamdeck, laptop, minipc, other laptop. This year I installed it on my old laptop again, after finally writing an install script for my system and putting everything on codeberg.

I'm a sales guy at my company, and our tech team usually takes months to ship features.
So earlier this week I tried this little fucker here, and holy fuck I had the new feature my client has been asking for since months running in an hour.

I immediately showed the customer a demo, and with them being very satisfied asked my boss how the fuck this is possible and why we're paying tech guys so much money for not doing anything. Apparently several senior devs are going to have a "townhall" tomorrow, if you catch my drift. Meanwhile my bonus package for the month looks pretty good.

Fuck you arrogant """""engineer""""" shitheads, it's always been THIS fucking easy and you were just lazy and arrogant. Get ready to get out of your fat greasy autistic comfort zone, it's time to get a real job.

I'm a cleaning lady at our company, and our sales guys usually take days, sometimes weeks, to give customers the features they request. I tap into cleaning lady network (internal and external) and I vibe code solutions before our customers even call our sales department. Management has already fired the entire tech team and there are talks of firing the sales team as well.

Why? cat /usr/src/linux/Documentation/process/code-of-conduct.rst

NVIDIA driver 580.142 (last I checked) runs, so why do (You) not install it? So do Windows vidya (through Linuxulator...)

Are you fucking serieus? How do I escape this cancer?
>>
>>108505635
FreeBSD as your daily driver is not for the faint of heart. Performance is going to be noticeably worse than Linux, and you're going to need a lot of technical knowhow if you plan on running Linux-only crap. Linuxulator is about as reliable as Wine, and you should expect weird driver issues particularly with any GPUs. Sound issues too.

If you were comfortable using Linux circa 2008, you'll be fine. If you're a freshfaced windows babby who's afraid of compiling software, debugging, etc. you should stay on Linux until you get good.

t. Has been using FreeBSD for 10 years, slowly moving over to using it as my primary desktop.

>>
>>108508111
never tried Void, how is it? whats the benefits and downsides?
>>
>>108508392
I switched to void after getting arch fatigue so the less i think about my distro the better honestly.
its very stable, official repositories are surprisingly large and well maintained. no systemd so theres not a lot of complexity in general, the init system is just a glorified bunch of init scripts that are symlinked to a directory for boot on start. package manager is fast and doesn't fuck up and stuff is stable.

theres also "restricted packages" which is similar to the aur but its just a giant git repository on github you need to clone and then build each package you want, i think i still prefer the aur but its servicable and still allows for installing "non-free" things like certain jetbrains IDEs through the package manager.

for documentation all you get is the void handbook, which is honestly enough since most of everything is just packaged upstream so you can cross reference with the arch wiki/official documentation. i don't think there's a lot of drama in the community and its been kicking since forever now.

its like an actually simple arch thats "set and forget", just werks, and doesn't require you to update every month. the only con is I keep mixing up xbps and xpbs and refuse to alias them since I want to get it right.

wait until you upload hundreds of gigs to gdrive and then try to download them at a later time.

I put 300gb on google drive after purchasing google one and i went back to download the files months later when i had enough space on my computer... Google drive literally breaks downloading my files, it cant zip it properly, it forgets to download like 80% of the stuff in my folder, it downloads things randomly in spaces i didnt tell it to.. its really bad

What are some dead programming languages and frameworks? This piece of shit is rightfully mocked on hacker news and reddit. I don’t understand how anybody could ever tolerate a dynamically typed language. Static types are necessary for a language being a useful engineering tool and not some entry level, poorly scaling baby crayons.

i just finished writing a small cgi perl script as a noob and its very /comfy/. much comfier than python but it also feels more limited and janky. its too close to a bash script than a full programming language for my liking.

documentation is all over the place too with different generations of doing the same shit, some with security flaws.
perl doesnt need to be alive since its still installed on every distro evah and can work in a vacuum without a "community" unlike certain other high level interpreted languages. plus perlmonks or whatever its called has every possible simple task youd want to do talked about on it from years ago.
im still pissed they removed cgi.pm from the perl core meaning i need to install something else on my debian vps.
