READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I guess it's mistake or something like that.
Because pornhub isn't blocked but xvideo is
onlyfans is blocked fansly isn't
imdb is blocked rottentomato is not
Most streaming services are blocked except hulu and netflix
I really don't know what did they use.
I've emailed them but didn't get reply, and when you're limited to one provider in your area, you don't have much choice.
Not to mention it's CG-NAT as well.

fuck off

Yes, I know this is the place where everybody loves to rice and have complete control over their system, but unlike some people who use Linux, I actually have a job and things I need to do.

I have been daily driving Linux, and it is very good, but I was wondering if it is possible to still have a good understanding of Linux systems on what some may call a “normie” distro like Ubuntu. Do I really need to use something like Arch or Gentoo to learn Linux? And if I do use Arch or Gentoo, am I even really learning Linux? It kind of seems I would learn more about the package manager and whatever other stuff it uses instead of actually learning Linux systems.

Why do you need to get good at linux if you're just gonna do office work, just use any desktop those are intuitive enough to not need to be good at anything and then you just get libre and brrrt you now have a working mans machine
Or you just webapp everything those just care about the browser you're using
>>
>>108502677
Learn Linux? No, you probably won't touch the kernel.
Learn GNU/Systemd/Linux? Then yes, you will learn a lot regardless of how you install your distro. The only difference is some stuff might already be already streamlined if its common or you might have to deal with changing or uninstalling annoying defaults if it's something uncommon or abtuse.
The advantage of "hard" distros is to make your computer behave exactly as you want or just to explicitly see what is being installed/setup. If you pick all default options or don't know what things mean then you should just use an "easy" distro.
If you just want to feel superior just join the "I actually do work on my machine" crowd.
>>
God I hate these linux newfags
The distros are ALL the same, its the same fucking thing. It doesn't fucking matter, pick one with a cool logo

It's all still GNU/Linux, the biggest differences in user experience come from the Desktop Environment as they come with a different set of applications and tools, some support Wayland by default others are still on X11.
Then there's package managers like apt, the new formats like flatpak and snap, and whether the distro uses systemd.
If you're happy with what you're using just spin up a VM to play around in instead of distrohopping.
>>
>>108502677
There are a million ways to interpret having 'a good understanding of Linux'.
If you want to learn the command line, filesystem, and tools to write software on Linux, you can use whatever. Ubuntu is fine.
If you want to understand how a Linux distro really comes together from a bunch of modules to get a coherent experience running, you can learn a lot from installing and using Arch.

Your choice - I have no interest in the latter. I use Fedora KDE btw

Flash media store data inside resistors by trapping electrons, deleting data blow those resistors permanently.
Not like HDD where "deleting" is just setting the location of the data to be writable.

See, it turns out deleting stuff still does that. Why write it to nothing, and then write it again when you can just rewrite once? The shit's still there unless you specifically write new data over it.

Benefits of delegating to an ECS system:
Your function can be parallelized making it faster if you have lots of objects it's being run on
Drawbacks of delegating to an ECS system:
You have no control over when it's being run

99% of the time you want the latter

You keep drawing analogies to entirely unrelated things, you aren't thinking about this correctly at all. GC makes things simpler. ECS makes things more complex, you're delegating a function to a call graph instead of just calling it
>>
this should be /ecsg/ at this point
>>
>>108507421
You fail to see other benefits because you are not aware of how and why IOC and DI are used outside of ECS.
Surprise: the same "delegating a function to a call graph instead of just calling it" is used in general purpose applications solely for architecture reasons.
>>
>>108507542
Deferring a function call to a call graph isn't IOC or DI though
You keep talking about these two concepts as if I don't understand them, literally everyone understands these, they're basic programming concepts
>>
>>108507436
It's interesting to read as a newfag though.

This year's Debian Project Leadership election has only ONE candidate and it's a Pajeeta (Sruthi Chandran):
>She is inactive on the mailing lists, and her Salsa profile is private so we can't even see what her coding contributions are.
>She's run for DPL 4 times before; lost each time
>Her entire platform is just about diversity and bitching about cis males
>She intends to formally incorporate Debian in the US, which would force Debian to introduce age verification
Her only claim to fame is organizing DebConf23, an event where a Debian developer literally fucking DIED because basic health & safety measures were not followed.

A much more qualified candidate was hospitalized during the nomination window and couldn't apply in time, yet she has refused to reopen nominations.

Debian is FUCKED unless the Debian developers all vote NOTA (None of the above).

She even got destroyed on DEI:
>Hi Sruthi,
>I must admit I am a bit clueless about diversity and outreach efforts in other Free Software projects. So I have absolutely no idea about how we are performing compared to others. Clearly we could improve, but are others doing better than we do? Which part of the issue is global to the Free Software world as a whole, and which part is specific to Debian?
>Do you have numbers to share? Are there nice initiatives in other Free Software projects that we should copy?
https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2026/03/msg00058.html
Her answer:
>I am active only in Debian, so I do not have any solid idea about how things are working out in other Free Software projects. But based on whatever discussions I had with people from other projects, I would say that, while there may be a handful of projects doing good with respect to Diversity, most of the projects are in similar situation as us. Doing a best practice study of all the Free Software projects would a good initiative, something I might be interested in future, but right now, I do not have answers for that.
https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2026/04/msg00000.html
Anyone who has lived in a third world country like India or worked with Indians can see through her. Of course people like Lucas Nussbaum and Thomas Lange, who is a professor in Köln, would not have experience working with Indians and are taking her presentation and answers at face value.
>>
>>108506919
Normally it would be, but you have to be the right person or someone WILL vote for her just to spite you and that's all it'll take.
They'll immediately start digging into you, to try and find out who you are, what credentials you have, and if you're a nazi or a decent fucking human being. Like if your github contributions grid isn't massively green and you don't have years of social media posts supporting Democrat Party of America talking points, don't bother.

>She intends to formally incorporate Debian in the US, which would force Debian to introduce age verification
wouod she even have the power to do so? most devs are opposition to it, and it obviously goes against deb's insterests as a whole.
>>108507190
i dont get her focus on diversity, deb is a global project, it IS diverse no matter the proportions of x or y people.
>>
>>108507464
>dont get her focus on diversity, deb is a global project, it IS diverse no matter the proportions of x or y people
diverse means no whites
>>
>>108507464
Simple, diversity doesn't actually refer to the variety of people in a group. It refers to the percentage of persons in the group that qualify as "diverse". You can have a group that's completely homogeneous and it'll still be 100% diverse.
The definition changed the moment that "diversity is about getting rid of white people (and that's a good thing)" article dropped.

all my laptops have been hand-me-downs but I have to buy one for the first time ever

I runlinux, I need it for browsing the internet, usually 20 or so tabs open, watching videos from streaming sites. I don't care about battery life, I don't care about weight or it being clunky - in fact, the sturdier it is, the better. I'd like to prioritize security but I don't want to go through the whole pain of opening the thing up to flash the bios. I just bought a 5090 and 128gb ddr5 ram so I'd like the laptop to be on the cheaper side.

I'm in Australia so my options are limited. T14, T14s gen 1 & 2 are plentiful, there's a bunch of other stuff on ebay but I don't know what to look for exactly.

Anyone had the issue of the mic-mute button being constantly lit on their T480? I think it started happening after one of the recent kernel updates but I am not sure. T14 gen 2 is probably the easiest of these not to go wrong with. Screens are ok to good, RAM can be expanded and CPUs, especially the AMD ones, should be good for another few years. It isn't super sturdy by pre-2017 standards but it's backpack-worthy if you cover the screen with a thin cloth. L14 gen 2 is a passable alternative, essentially T14 but thicker, but you have to mind the screen which is sometimes an ugly 1366x768 TN.
