Firewalls might have protection against that. It was a thing that skype could do in 2004 or something. Not a big surprise if someone did not knew it was a thing. Because now it probably is not. When did you use it the last time?

The price jump and hardware required to drive 4k over 1440p just doesn’t seem worth it. Then you gotta scale everything up too. I sit pretty far back from my monitors so I never notice any problems with the pixel density of 2k on my 32”.

we have like a dozen different insolvency crises brewing and that's just the ones we know of. the government debt crisis being the biggest one.

it's kinda funny because if you look at the numbers, basically like 60% of the budget is just directly transferred to boomers on the simple merit of being over the age of 65 (medicare, social security) and then interest is also mostly being paid to boomers since those are the ones who hold US bonds. and then on top of that, there's not enough taxes to cover the budget, so the remaining 25% of the budget is borrowed from, guess whom? boomers mostly. and they end up having to pay even MORE interest to them

anyway idk what's going to happen exactly but the most logical outcome is the insolvencies erasing a huge chunk of the assets' market cap across the board (since everything is somewhat bound to US bonds and debt in general). but maybe i'm just wishing that because i categorically refuse to believe in the "passive income" meme being in anyway sustainable. a more cynical belief is that the US gov tries to bail out the people they care about the most, which is the boomers, and we go right back to status quo for another 5-10 years until they need another bailout

I hate the shitty threads you people make.
I want to share what has opened my eyes, for other novices like me, who are trying to leave Winslop 11.

This thread is supposed to put you on the right track to making your own decision,
after reading this thread the fog of Linux won't be there anymore,
you will know what you want and you will find the distro that is suitable for you.

> 1. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg
This old image includes 95% of all Linux distros in existence, study this.

Studying this image alone, is going to help you see through idiotic arguments like "mint is better" or "go with arch" or "go with pop_os" -- most of them have a parent OS.

> 2. Distro arguments are pointless. #1 choice that you must make is what family Linux do you want and pick.
If you studied image above, you will see there distinct few families of Linux, the relevant ones are: Debian, Fedora, Arch.

OpenSUSE is very good. You can work around the Nvidia issues if you learn some basics, mainly just learning how to pair kernel version with driver version.
That said on bare metal, you may want to choose something reliable that has an Nvidia ootb option. Even Arch has that now if you use Archinstall.
>>
>>108504060
Most laptops are using proprietary ACPI protocols. You would need to patch the kernel, but since Debian's kernel is very old in comparison to other distributions, this option is out off the table, since I don't want to patch and compile kernel from scratch myself
>>
>>108503889
>>108504060
>>108506306
Getting a modern kernel is as easy as swapping for Liquorix (or Xen depending on the distro, but I've found Liquorix more reliable).
And updated firmware is as easy as
`cd /tmp
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
cd linux-firmware/
sudo cp -va * /lib/firmware/`
and then
`sudo update-initramfs -u`

I also use CoreCtrl to manage my 9070XT, so with it I've also replaced my Mesa drivers with an almost up to date version with Ernstp's Mesa Almost-Stable repo;

>it's pretty much as fast as C.
it will never be as fast because you can't control your allocations/deallocations, you know the thing that makes things slow in the first place
>>
>>108507458
GC doesn't make your program "slow", but it can freeze for a short time if you do a lot of allocations/deallocations.
A lot of the times a proper GC language will be faster than poorly written C++/Rust (especially Rust) code, because GC languages can automanage cache locality to some extent, while most C++/Rust programmers mess this up, leading to up to 10x slowdowns

Freedom to fork things that work instead of improving them.
Freedom to rewrite things that work instead of improving them.
Freedom to have things not working because the developers have to account for a billion different configurations.
Freedom to incorrectly configure your machine and cause obscure cryptic issues that seem unrelated and impossible for other people to replicate without taking the same steps.
Freedom to have inferior software because the developers can't assert the user environment.
Basically, freedom to fuck it up in every step of the way.

MacOS "just works" because they control the hardware and the software.
Windows "just works" because the user has no control over the entire OS stack.
Linux "works in your machine" because you happened to have a similar environment as a specific developer.

After using Linux for so long I treat so many things as minor inconveniences (like different display/audio protocols supporting different features, how enabling the compositor fucks specific games, and so on) that would never happen on any other OS.

I just don't feel like Linux will ever go anywhere as long as things keep fracturing whenever they reach past a certain size. Having a BDFL in your project seems to work well but I don't know if that's a good solution, it won't stop people from forking your shit instead of contributing to a single effort.
