READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

What's a good NAS if all I care about is data storage and streaming saved movies/shows to my TV or Laptop through Plex or Jellyfin (at home)? I was just gonna splurge on a Synology DS925+, but after doing some research I found that this particular model apparently sucks for transcoding. Bear in mind that I'm semi tech-illiterate, so I'd prefer something that just werks even if it costs me slightly more than the DIY alternatives.

>>107657449
get anything with an intel processor for quicksync
it doesn't really make any sense that amd socs don't have good decode support but apparently the industry is completely retarded
>>
I transformed my old gaming rig to a jellyfin NAS. And it was pointed out to me that the 4070S sitting in there is overkill and underutilized.
I was reading how to set up local models and figured docker is the best solution. The issue is jellyfin is on bare metal.
Should it be moved to docker? Or would being in bare metal be better because it has priority to the GPU?
>>
>>107657493
nvidia has container runtime binaries for docker just set it up per the instructions
no idea about both bare metal and docker at the same time, though I do know that nvidia places arbitrary limits on the number of simultaneous transcoding that can be done on consumer cards.

not quite, that's cidr notation to indicate prefix length. it's not a subnet but can be used as notation to indicate the subnet size and starting address by prefix. it can also be used to indicate supernets and general prefix length.

Chrome doesn't have web based UI.
Firefox has it and that's why people who like to customize their browser use it.
>>
There is no such thing as a native UI on Linux, and """native""" on Windows means of one 8 different UI technologies. Not having a WebUI is not the death of ladybird but it would be nice to have as an option, in my opinion.

I thought most M-Discs made today were either scams or just not up to the quality of the original ones. Otherwise I just wish tape storage was more accessible for most people without needing to get $1000+ drives and adapters.

You're supposed to have multiple backups and redundancy in your storage, plus the assumption that a single physical medium will last your entire life is fundamentally incorrect. If you want to keep data for your entire life, you will have to periodically make new copies on newer storage media and also inspect your stuff for failure / degradation.

is your budget 100€?
>>
fiio jt7 looks like a great value headphone
can it overtake the he400se? all it has to do is not be built like shit
>>
>>107657083
Out of the box frequency response is much better than anything Hifiman, distortion is pretty low as well. There's a resonance near 4k but even at that point distortion is kept below 0.5% so not audible. It's indeed very impressive, you probably wouldn't even have to do much EQ if any. Build quality is certainly not up to par to anything Audeze, DCA or even FiiO's other planars like FT1 Pro, there's a lot more plastic here than in those models. Still probably better built than HE400SE, that thing uses the lowest quality materials known to man. Too fast to judge if there's any design flaws that could lead to them failing long term but I sure as shit would trust FiiO more than chinkfiman.
>>
>>107657380
i'll probably get it, i really like the folding mechanism and it's something that i really miss from my old dca headphone
it looks comfy enough
>>
>>107657472
Them being foldable is definitely great, more hifi headphones should be capable of that. Personally I'd be a little cautious of the chink plastic being low quality. I have the wireless Edifier planars I use for commuting and the plastic on those is so shit it constantly squeaks.

When I did some digging, it was caused by the firmware of the keyboard throwing enumeration loops. I'm pretty sure I'm using generic USB drivers, I also had some drivers though for running the RGB, but it didn't fix the issue until I outright replaced what keyboard/mouse I was using...

i changed my username recently and now i don't have sudo permissions even though i'm still in the wheel group. apparently archinstall sets up sudoers per user and does not apply it to the wheel as a whole. why is that? are archinstall mantainers retarded or is there a reason to do this i don't know about?

// stupid retarded way to do it
/etc/sudoers.d/00_<username>

// best practice and comfy

Are you retarded? Sudoers is already a security risk, giving sudo access y default to all current and future users in the wheel group is a disaster waiting to happen.

Weird shit. Can't recall seeing an installer expand /etc/sudoers into a directory, it's just pointless extra complexity unless you have a whole bunch of users with individual permissions.
