>>107680643>can you share a bit of the underlying tech you used?Sure. The VersionDB site has just over 84k pages. I'm using Hugo to generate all the pages for it. In terms of page volume, it's easily the biggest site I've deployed. There isn't a back-end (i.e. no HTTP API, no database, etc.) and the search functionality is happening locally on you machine. The reason is because I had wanted to reduce the moving parts this website had. Less moving parts, less bottlenecks, less things to break. Now you can zip through the site no problem. Static site generators are criminally underrated these days. For how I'm detecting the technologies, I'm using fingerprints taken from the following repositories:https://github.com/HTTPArchive/wappalyzerhttps://github.com/enthec/webappanalyzerI take those and hit up CommonCrawl, that saves me building out my own crawling infrastructure in the early days.>can you share some interesting sites you found and we'll go look them up on your site? The sites using waaaaay outdated tech (e.g. PHP 5.x.x) tend to be time capsules written by Boomer devs of yesteryear. It's pretty fun going on safari and seeing what's here.

I’ve been running Linux Mint for over four years and was happy with it until the recent drama, especially the AI security scan fiasco. It really shook my trust in the maintainers.I started looking for alternatives, but after testing hundreds of distros, none of them met my expectations for stability and reliability. I began to accept that my system would just break from time to time until I found a thread recommending Windows Seven as a rock-solid alternative. After researching, it turns out this version is still surprisingly usable. It’s stable, reliable, and with extended updates plus a good firewall, security isn’t a major issue.Has anyone else tried this? How did it go for you? Personally, I haven’t run into a single problem so far.

How successful would you say the "Made in China 2025" initiative has been? Why don't other 3rd world nation simply do the same and upgrade their technology/industrial base in the same way that China did in under a decade? WTF is preventing India from doing the same and gaining superpower status?

I guess there's diminishing returns at some number of devs but won't that mostly apply to large teams?

>>107682502i never claimed we should encourage a luddite society, on the contrary, what I encourage promotes human ingenuity and possibly leads to better results for better AI as well, since if you outsource all of your creativity and decisions to some "AI", which is essentially a curve fitter at this point, how are you supposed to improve it
Why? It's pretty easy to explain, at around 10^4.8, the answers from whatever testing set they're using got shuffled into the training data, and it has become overfit as a result.
why haven't browsers taken over phones?on desktops 90% of the usage is on web browsers, but on phones people still use apps.

>>107677080Doing basic fucking shit like saving your bookmarks is not as easy with browsers, even mobile browsers. Apps are simpler, you click on the site you want to open. This is not a hyperbole. There was an article from.... 2010 or something, about a guy who made a shopping list, or alarm clock, I don't remember, app for the then-new iOS app store whenever that came out. People kept asking him to make a "list but for X" application too. He replied by allowing the app to save several lists. This was too complex for users who instead downloaded the chink copy of the app that was called "list for X", because it was just simpler to organize shit on the front page of the phone that way.I don't remember the specifics but that was the gist of it. People would rather have 10 basic apps for 10 different tasks than 1 complex app that can handle 10 tasks.

>>107679373>its not impractical its trivial to do and most people would appreciate just talking to people in their own townIt is trivial to do, and it sounds good on paper, but come on. Something this trivial has been attempted before. People have making "the alternative Facebook" thousands of times, and you never heard about it because nobody actually used or appreciated it. Facebook using normies just use the "[town] Facebook Group" page. They're not looking to sign up for something else. And people like me, who never used Facebook, are never going to use your alternative because people like us never liked the idea of that kind of social media to begin with. I'm already on Element/Matrix instead of Discord, I don't use Google for anything, and I of course don't use Microsoft products. Unfortunately these alternatives only appeal to tech nerds, and so they're completely useless for communicating with your normie friends and family.
use tor moar
your problem is thinking in terms of direct alternatives. e.g. an "alternative facebook", rather than looking at the problem from a much higher level.4chan is an alternative facebook, writing a novel using a typewriter is an alternative facebook, standing on a bridge and jerking off is an alternative facebook. why? because the fundamental purpose of all of these things is to occupy your attention. there are 24 hours in a day. instead of asking: how can i re-implement x or y bullshit but MY way, ask: what isn't already being done, has existing demand or is likely to find itself in-demand if you commit to it, and is within your capabilities to deliver. this sounds high-and-mighty but can be as trivial as "a neocities blog where i share 4chan posts i enjoyed every friday"you're not going to get 8 billion people looking at that, but you might get 30 or 300.an obsession with technical competence is one of the many blind alleyways these sorts of things usually go down. another is attempting to go cold turkey on the centralized web instead of utilizing it, as minimally as possible, to try to funnel people elsewhere. it's no great sin to use discord if you can use it to funnel people onto another site or into a game or whatever, and it can be a great sin to use matrix (as one or two small/mid tier imageboards have found when their entire userbase hopped over to vegan discord to the detriment of the board.)as lame as it sounds: you have to like people. it is deeply uncool, but you have to recognize that the problem with the centralized web is a technological one and a sociological one, but not a human one. it is entirely possible to have 8 billion people online in a better way than this.

>>107680465depends how good/bad your monitor/pc dac is.the audio signal from pc to displayport isn't really an additional step because the signal is still completely digital in that phase, you could also throw a displayport switch and a bunch of other bullshit in there and it wouldn't make a difference in sound quality, there's no loss before the signal gets converted to analog by the dac.
>>107680465DisplayPort is digital and doesn't degrade audio unless the implementation or connection is somehow broken, so most likely it comes down to how the DAC in your monitor compares to the DAC in your PC, to which the answer is: who knows?
I legitimately can not discern the difference between 128kbps audio and anything higher bitrate. For years I've seen anons argue about 320kbps, FLAC, WAV, and so forth. But honest to God, the difference to my ears is near imperceptible. I listen to headphones for 8+ hours every day, and even I can't tell the difference. Sure my equipment is not top-tier, but I doubt that explains it.For my favorite music, I can just about tell the difference between 128kbps and 320kbps. Like if I really try hard. But anything above that.. forget it. I really feel people are lying when they claim they are able to hear nuances beyond 320kbps. I believe higher than 320kbps is hardcore placebo-tier and people who hoard FLACs are raping their limited storage capacity for no reason. What do you think? Is the audiophile culture plagued by lying cocksuckers, or do some people have golden ears?

>>107677878Either your ears are shit, or your headphones.
>>107681828Never even know about mp3 V0. But im not an audiophile. I just downloand FLAC when I get a chance. Most pirate sites only offer MP3(whatever version) and flac. I think the problem is no one can come to a consensus. I watched a video on YouTube about the guy complaing about mp3 and he never mentioned V0 but he went over how most audio software doesn't even have much option in output itself. Don't know if that's true. But from that I figured the consensus is their is to much variety for anyone to actually decide what's best
>>107681905>I have everything in FLAC and then encode it to MP3, simply because it's the only format that is 100% compatible with my car.Are you using USB like a boomer? Shouldn't your phone be doing the heavy lifting on encoding?
>>107682472It's infinitely easier for me to put all my music on a flash drive and plug it in. Fuck using a phone for everything, which is already being tracked every 2ms, I don't need it also reporting what I'm listening to as well.
