Why does Rust not have libraries?
48 replies and 2 images omitted. Click here to view.

>>107819013
It's complex. While that is possible, one problem you have to contend with is side-channels. Two distinct programs can bypass memory protection by using cross-process page dedup as a side-channel. Usually such dedup only happens on processes in the same process tree for this reason.

Linux has some kernel "daemon" that can do whole memory dedup, by the way. It's a bit strange honestly.

NTA, you are probably thinking about C++.
C ABI on popular platforms is generally stable. It's just C++ and Rust that have unstable ABI.
>>
>>107825752
>Well... C++ ABI is kind of a complex thing. Usually your std impl will have some stability in layout for types like array and vector and what not. It's not worth depending on, but some people do. C++ isn't a monolith like Rust.
Rust and C++ make no guarantees regarding stability of ABI. There is no difference.

Even 576i on a CRT looked sharper and more vivid than 1080p YouTube today
You have to watch 4k video on a 1080p display now for it to look any good

I mean, yeah, it all depends on the original resolution of the thing. Even if you see 1080p or 4k on youtube, if the original video was 360p it's not going to look great. Not to mention youtube transcodes everything you upload to it a few times over.

>Song submission rules/guidelines
Upload the file somewhere, preferably in a lossless format, and post the link here. If you want to update your track, make a new post.
Include the song title in the post, and make it clear that your song is a submission for the album.
Optionally you may include cover art for your track, but please confirm that the image in your post is the cover art or it won't be included. You may not use your real artist name.
Songs that contain anything against YouTube's policies won't be uploaded on YT, but will still be added to the album.
By default, tracks will be normalised to -14 LUFS (integrated loudness) in the release. You may specify a lower loudness for your track.
Use of AI is banned. This includes AI generated stems, samples, and effects. "AI" includes all neural network-based models and not hard-coded automation/procedural generation. You are allowed to ask an LLM about music-related questions, but asking it to give you musical ideas (eg. generating a chord progression) is already a no-no.

Rhymed Version (cleaned of slurs, but still fierce):

You’re lost in illusions like the grifters online,
Thinking Suno as a DAW could ever truly shine.
Feed it stems, feed it gold — it still churns out the slop,
No soul in the system, just a factory shop.

And those plugins you praise, even ones built the same,
Can’t capture the magic that defined the old game.
Classic trance had a spark, something rare in its core,
A shimmer, a spirit you can’t fake anymore.

Give a novice the hardware, they can summon that sound,
But the plugin imitation falls flat on the ground.

i still dont understand x86 x64 when downloading/installing software. always get x64 or what ? qhy do ppl include x86 if it's obsolete
>>
>>107826283
Because it's not obsolete and many computer still operate in x86 natively.
>>
>>107823385
There was no user demand for 64 bit Windows XP. Few computers had 4GB or more RAM in the range of 2001-2007 which is when XP was still relevant.
I have a workstation laptop from 2007 and it's still configured with only 2GB of RAM. CPU isn't even 64 bit. (Core Duo)
>>
>>107826283
Always get x64 unless your system can't run it, x86 versions are only for backwards compatibility.

Why do they still exist?
Maybe someone still uses an ancient PC as a NAS or something.
I think in Japan for example loads of people still run old 32 bit computers because their philosophy is to never throw out something that still works.

>Capital goes where it has the best chance of turning into more capital.
i am not that anon but imagine you have a government and it could either produce bullets locally or import bullets for a 15% discount.
It makes sense from a capitalist perspective to import the bullets but it makes sense from a national security perspective to produce them locally. being dependent on an outside party for a crucial defense item is a weakness that can be exploited.

my point is spending money in a way that maximizes return is not always the best decision.
building bubbles might enrich the individual players but it also from a national perspective weaken the nation

mac is probably the best operating system rn to have
windows is complete and utter garbage
i really like linux (fedora especially) and it comes very close too, but i find myself using mac the most. mostly because there is more compatible software for my needs and also i like the convenience of ADP that they implemented few years ago, only big tech that offers that type of data security when it comes to cloud.
>>
i ditched my entire PC "everything" and got a macbook and have since bought a mac mini as well, its objectively a better end user experience
it does what i want it to do and nothing more
by that i mean you can do pic related

turn off windows updates entirely and compare the processes
on macos i simply go to update, open the settings for updates, and turn the little buttons to "off", and it never does anything i dont ask ever again, i will update when i want to and never when i dont want to
it doesnt give me entire screen pop-ups telling me about upgrading
>>
>>107826684
oh and because i always have to clarify this, theres always people who go "oh but you have to update, updates are good"
i understand this, i will eventually update stuff as i see fit
but its not the updates themselves that are the problem, its that you as the end user dont have control over it, microsoft makes it overly difficult to do what should be as simple as a toggle on/off, and what was previously that easy
you fuckin own the computer, it should do as you say, and there shouldnt be any compromises
i tell my macbook to not update, it doesnt update and doesnt bother me further about it
the same applies to many attributes of it, it does only what i want it to do

linux is very much so in line with this as well, and linux is a great option for a lot of people, its not suitable for me and my uses unfortunately
part of the other things i wanted to move away from involve desktop pc hardware, i just dont like that entire type of device anymore, this i greatly prefer
for people who value things like that, they will want to continue with desktop pcs and that type of hardware in general, thats perfectly fine if that fits their desires out of tech, it doesnt fit mine anymore

i think a lot of people here would genuinely be very surprised by modern macs and macOS and would greatly enjoy it, its a matter of giving them the opportunity to try
>>
>>107825275

What’s the proper way to measure your dict in bytes?

When you size up a dict, do you care more about how wide it is (number of entries) or how deep it goes (what each one holds)?

And when you need to unload the payload, do you dump it straight into a buffer, stream it somewhere else, or flush it to disk?

It is a weird tech. It is dangerously inaccurate for things you don't already know, while being more of a hindrance for things you do. It really only shines when it's something of little to no importance, to be thrown out like garbage.
>>
>>107817273
It works off statistics, it doesn't actually understand shit.
So if you make it gobble specs, the specs say "has X", and you ask it "does it have X?", most of the time it should respond with "yes, it does", because in the training, asking that question for a spec that has that line should result in this type of answer.
However, it's generally set to a certain amount of randomness, because the average user expects the model to be oh so creative. Mix that with the fact that the training data contains a ton of shit that no one bothered to filter out, and occasionally you get the wrong response. It will always be presented with absolute confidence.
This is only for simple shit like "here are specs, perform Control + F for me". As it gets more complex, you start hitting topics with little or even no training around it. Remember: it doesn't understand shit. So if you're dealing with a novel topic it is of barely any use.
LLMs are artificial parrots.

I am self-taught and am currently learning about neural dynamics, SNN, and neuromorphic hardware.
I am quick to grasp new concepts and can quickly internalize practically any material, no matter how abstract, but I lack the prior knowledge to get started at a high level because, as a student, I preferred to fuck around and smoke weed rather than sit in school, which was extremely boring.
Now I can follow Harvard lectures without any problems, and as soon as something comes up that I don't have the foundation for, I can look it up much faster using AI. What used to take me an hour to find the information on the internet, I now ask AI to explain it to me and provide sources. It only takes me two minutes now. It's extremely motivating because you can now follow along instead of constantly looking things up.
I can easily get through two weeks of Gerstner Lab in a day.
AI democratizes education.

P.S. Where can I connect with like-minded people, ideally other active autodidacts, to discuss these topics?
