why don't you see more people attempting to utilize this feature on their personal computers? you can essentially lock down your entire C: drive so that changes to the filesystem are saved ephemerally and lost on reboot, and then manually create exceptions for directories that need persistent changes.
with that plus a data drive you basically get all the benefits of an immutable system that nixos and silverblue are targeting.
i can install applications/games via scoop and use my desktop as normally, save pictures, do my work, etc. but the core windows installation essentially exists in a frozen state. changes to C: are saved either in ram or another location on disk and then scrubbed at boot.
why don't i see people trying to leverage this for home use cases? is it just because it's a command-line tool?

kek
>>
>>107584168
you can turn it off and on as needed. so for updates or changes you just turn it off, run the update, and turn it back on. it requires some rebooting but the advantage is also more deliberate updating. kind of ideal if you plan to update infrequently.
>>107584213
i'd assume but i'm talking about people on /g/ not windows users at large. i thought most of you are running iot ltsc.
>>107584280
well then stay where you are. i use nixos on all my other machines. i discovered this while trying to make a windows computer i need to use as nixos-like as possible.
it's not atomic, or entirely reproducible, configurations aren't declarative. but i can do a fresh unattented windows install, use winget to import a list of programs to install, and then run a powershell script that freezes windows after i get it set up how i like it.
accomplishing this with a variety of awful microsoft tools makes me appreciate how elegantly nixos handles things that's for sure.

Selfhosted GitHub Actions will become paywalled in 3 months.
Your CI/CD pipeline that runs on your own selfhosted hardware will become a paid feature thanks to M$.

OP here, thanks for the news.
They didn't even bother to write another email clarifying this.
Still our team will switch away from GitHub and use Forgejo and Forgejo Actions instead, we can't trust them anymore.
>“We’re postponing the announced billing change for self-hosted GitHub Actions to take time to re-evaluate our approach.”
So they will proceed to nickel and dime anyway, just with a different strategy.

>>107586188
GitHub reversed its decision for now but I'm sure their internal teams saw the numbers and thought that the number of businesses using selfhosted runners is high enough to justify charging for this feature without losing many customers.

I keep getting the urge to cheap out and buy a t490 for like $130. Also what eBay sellers do you guys like?
>>
>>107586040
Don't think of it as cheaping out. Think of it as getting a disposable hobby machine on the side.
As for eBay, maybe I'm overly cautious, but I've always stuck with resellers who have their own website, a chamber of commerce registration, good independent reviews, a sensible return policy and at least 1 year warranty. If that means paying a bit more, so be it.
If your country has tech enthusiast forums with a marketplace section, that's another option. It's more work for sellers to create a new forum account and rebuild reputation after screwing someone over than to create a new eBay account and buy fake sales from bot accounts.
>>
I get a (slight) discount on thinkpads through my workplace. I miss having a laptop, and at most would probably play old CRPGs, make shitpost videos using cracked adobe premier, and play music when I play ttrpgs with friends.
I've been burned buying cheap ones from eBay years ago. What are some of the newer models that Lenovo offers that would work for my use case? I know I could probably get a cheapo macbook or Asus or something from Best Buy, but I always really liked Thinkpads.

thats an entirely different thing because not only have both terms been used interchangably allow/whitelist block/blacklist but the point is not the word itself, but rather if in somewhere like iptables the semantic ALLOW would have been changed to NIGGER or whatever the fuck, breaking existing scripts and tooling

like how is it possible that there are so many retards in /g/ that dont even comprehend the crux of the issue, are you all indians or something or how is it possible you cant figure this shit out

the point is not only having to rewrite existing scripts and tooling but also the expectation that you know what the master branch is called is now gone, it could be main or master or anything else and you need to add extra processing to deal with that,

and its fucking CRAZY how you flip this thing around as if *we* are the "mindbroken politics obsessed people" when decades old naming conventions you could trust get broken because of politics because some nigger tranny got angry at the word "master"

i dont fucking care what the fuck it is called the point is that once the convention is made and everything is built around the convention you dont just go and change it for retarded political reasons
and *we* are the political ones?? holy fucking mental gymnastics batman

AI is where all the money is, so GPU vendors are optimizing their hardware for it. Since AI necessitates GPUs being able to run general purpose computing code (like CUDA or whatever AMD's thing is) well, this means GPU hardware is becoming more general purpose and converging in design at the same time. This means that future APIs can finally assume GPUs to be general purpose massively parallel processors, which massively simplifies design, since the simplest API is no API: you just manipulate memory, and do control flow/synchronization (barriers) and arithmetic. No more SRV, UAV, texel buffers, uniform buffers, descriptor sets, render passes, etc. All that garbage is GONE. In 10 years or so, we will probably have some standardized ISA so you can just directly send code to the GPU for it to execute, and by god it will be beautiful.
