I think the "top" command works on tty, you can use that.Lightdm should also be called by systemd at boot, it's what starts it. Check if that service is enabled (systemctl status lightdm), if it is enabled but not started, try starting it and see if it gives you any errors. If it isn't enabled, enable it (systemctl enable --now lightdm), the --now option will also start it so it if it isn't already.
