READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

>Any reason why a HP 759505-001 Dual M.2 SATA PCIe Riser wouldn't work in a consumer motherboard?
Lack of PCIe bifurcation but honestly most motherboards support that nowadays, I even remember at least one or two A series tier shitboards supporting splitting the x8 or x16 slot into 2xx4 and 4xx4 respectively.
>>
>>106532539
so its for people to pirate movies ok got it
very gay to spend $1000s on that
>>
>>106532540
>Lack of PCIe bifurcation
It doesn't use any PCIe data pins though? Data is exclusively handled through SATA ports on the end of the card.
My concern was whether or not there was some proprietary gotcha regarding power or something, there seems to be a lot of these cards around for cheap so I figured it's either because something is up with them or simply that M.2 SATA was a flash in the pan.

OK so what are you gonna do with it?
Hard mode: without talking about "movies" or whatever crap you can watch from plugging in a new hard drive
INTENSE mode: Without saying "uh it's what you do on a normal PC but instead of just doing it you spend hours of your life and tons of money"

just wondering what the justification is here

It seems like every "new" product or service coming out is the kind of thing schizos would have ranted about on the street while neurotypicals would dismiss them with a "Yeah, that'd never happen" but now they're here and people apparently want to pay money to have the part of bone removed?

I genuinely think housing will get so expensive we will see a shift towards people living on the road and traveling as the default. I know some zoomers do that now but housing will probably be something only those with money will get to have.

I'm in my 30's and for as long as I can remember I've been hearing people say

They're not allowed to say it's bad, so they act like they think it's good, which leads to people actually thinking its good because they never heard why it might be bad. Even the ones who don't watch it can only affirm it, making something up about not having the time for it.

It started out as a good thing but in true fashion humans have completely ruined it in just 20 years time.

I can't view a single website without dozens of ads completely blocking the screen and videos autoplaying in the background.

I visit forums for coding discussion and its full of third worlders asking retarded questions in broken english.

I visit social media and its all people fighting/arguing and girls showing off their fanny.

I try to sign in to any service and it takes 5 minutes to login. First you have to enter your username and password, then go find your phone for the text code (2fa) then you can finally login. Then it asks you if you would like to use a 4 digit pin code to login next (wtf?)

Shit doesnt even make any sense anymore.

I am here to declare that the internet is dying. Its basically already dead. There is no fixing it. The only question now is what comes next?

For now, I am leaving the internet. All it does is give me a headache now. Its not worth it.

Cant you not sign up and use something else. Clearly thats a shitty service

I try to avoid the internet mostly. But since the local bank branch closed down I have to drive 30 minutes to do my banking lately. I see this trend just getting worse.

Eventually if this trend continues you won't be able to use any service at all without the internet because no alternative means will be available.

I think the worst part is that technology is just making my life more inconvenient and convoluted it feels like. Clearly the kind of innovation trajectory set by midwits.

I'd like to know how other anons see all this panning out for them.

Reading the article is pretty funny and I'm pretty confident it's bullshit or his parents are running it and using him as the face for marketing.
They apparently spend 770000 a month just on marketing, while also needing to do payroll for his 30 employees (feels like a pretty obvious lie) and the reviews are full of people saying the app doesn't fucking work.
The idea is it's a calorie tracker that you take a photo of your food and it sends it to ChatGPT and it tells you how many calories it has.
Also where is this $1.4m coming in a month? They claim to have 8.3m downloads. You expect me to believe that more than 10% of users are paying at least $1 a month for this?
