>just remembered that all my data backed up on CDs and DVDs will decay and my external SSDs and HDDs will gradually lose data due to cosmic ray bit flips

Hard disks fare better than SSDs and other flash memory. At least the bits don't fade over a few years without power. The motor bearings seizing up over decades does seem to be an issue though, and the way they're built you can't access the bearings to oil them without opening the drive and taking the platters out.
M-Disc is a better option. They can be read in any reasonable optical drive, and last 100+ years. Of course 100 years isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, and optical drives are already going out of production.
Converting the data into a visual representation like QR codes or similar and printing that on microfilm could store it much longer, so long as the microfilm is stored in good conditions. Similarly with laser etching it into blocks of glass, which is probably more durable.

Still, nothing beats the longevity or accessibility of writing it in multiple commonly used human languages and carving it into stone tablets. Long after all current tech has turned to dust and microfilm spoiled or been destroyed in fires, someone will still be able to read one or more of the languages on those tablets.
>>
>>107651336
10TB was never stable and that doesn't answer the question of needing fresh storage.
>>
>>107647352
If current storage prices are to high for you, your data is simply not valuable enough to be long time stored.

Usecase for unredacted files?

What makes you think that transparency is a metric?

Reminder:
-Don't mention Israel
-Don't disrespect the Administration, the economy is amazing.
-Don't assume the Epstein files are real. They are not.

Missing files are obsolete. You don't need that.

Please, don't leave comments if you have nothing to say.

You can just use Claude Code. Even though the main purpose is for programming, you can easily tell it to do some other things. For example, I asked it to create a directory structure by years in my b folder, then I asked it to verify the exif data of each picture and move to the correct directory.
I could do that with a simple script, but I wanted to test out how well Claude could handle tasks like that. It kinda worked
>>
>>107651635
Define "general tasks".

If you give those AI Agents full access they can pretty much do anything as long as it has a text interface. They can even use GUIs by emulating mouse and keyboard with python commands.
>>
>>107651635
Claude code can do this for you. Just drop in whatever MCP you need. Careful with it executing commands though. It might fuck something if you're not careful.

but god do i hate modern windows so fucking much. i just don't get why someone else cant make a compatible accessible gui OS that isnt windows in fucking 2025. youd think with all the money to be made stealing market cap from microsoft someone would try right?!

Maybe the chinese with their Harmony OS or whatever will be the unexpected disruptor.

Others distro let you do that too, with more architecture options. Arch users act like it is something special or advanced. Its repo sucks, freeloading everything to the AUR. Minimal images are a thing in other distros as well.

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

OMV is on all the time since I'm seeding torrents.

Thinking of buying an SFF PC to serve as a media streaming PC. Primary functions will be to access shared video files over SMB (playing natively through mpv) and over Jellyfin (for stuff that needs transcoding). Settled on used 8th gen Intel office PC's, not sure if I should go with Lenovo, Dell, or HP. Any advantages one way or the other?
>>
>>107653480
Pick whatever has the best specs and is cheapest.
People meme HP sucks but it's more nitpicking then anything.
>>
>>107653497
I can get either of the three for the same price, but it's a bring-your-own CPU/SSD/RAM type of deal.
Don't Dell SFFs have a PCIe slot that's right up against the PSU? I have a two-slot fanless GT 1030 I'm not using so I was thinking of putting it in there for shits and giggles.
>>
>>107651577
>usecase
You have vast amounts of data that you want stored in a way that can be access by multiple devices (network storage), accessed remotely (cloud file server), or act as data storage for apps that you self host and access remotely (e.g. jellyfin for self hosted video streaming).

No it's to make the downloaded stream useless to you. You're not supposed to be able to get the keys and decrypt it.

>>
>>107653655
It's not javascript that gets it. It's the "content decryption module" in your browser. We can implement this in javascript to intercept the keys though, which is not what Google intended but there are a lot of cracks in the security. See:
