Probably something with an N100 inside, I'd kill for a 13 inch netbook with a touchscreen and a card reader like my Yoga 11e but within the same 7w on battery budget. Oh yeah, and with a bigger battery.

>>107710561
Theoretically yes.
Will it work properly and be stable enough for daily use? Absolutely not.

were they a stroke of genius or a mistake? and how come no-one ever tried implementing rational numbers in hardware?

>how come no-one ever tried implementing rational numbers in hardware?
I could be wrong but I think all rational arithmetic is really just integer arithmetic under the hood.
For example rational "division" is just multiplication of the denominator.

And I don't know but maybe rational arithmetic is already implemented in SIMD (single instruction, multiple data)?
>>
>>107711506
In a language like LISP that does rational arithmetic naively you can get pages and pages of denominator.
It becomes unreadable long before you run out of memory.
>>
How many bits do you need to represent the maximum double as an int? Something like 1024. Then double that to represent the decimal portion.
We deserve an Int2048 type.
>>
>>107710926
The limited precision fucks things up really fast.
Can't even represent 1/10th as a binary floating point for example.

When you deal with financial data for example it makes far more sense to use rational numbers or just integers of cents or tenths of cents.
>>
>>107713133
it's just integer operations, which the compiler can use simd for. though in general, you have to compute the gcd of nominator ^ denominator and divide them by it if you want to prevent overflows, which can be an expensive operation.

The biggest issue of rationals is that you have to enforce the representation yourself. For instance 1 = 10/10 = 147/147 and so on, therefore unless you always simplify by the gcd some maths become more difficult.

one solution is to used a fixed denominators, so called 'fixed precision', but they loose the flexibility of rationals

>steam index was $999
index was sold separately for $500, its the basestations and controllers that jacked up the price

meanwhile the steam frame does away with the expensive basestation tracking, the controllers are significantly cheaper and the headset itself is severely outdated and significantly cheaper built too, to the point where they nickle and dime the fucking controller straps as an optional paid add on
the parts of the steam frame does not add up to much more than $500 even when including assembly and quality control and they could have very well achieved their target of the same price as the index (500 not 1000) if it wasnt for the fucked up RAM situation right now, which is going to fuck it up

So I just need to do basic tasks like listen to music, stream video, and browse basic websites. Is installing windows 2000 a bad idea? How fucked will I be for drivers?

The reason I want to do this for one, it's botnet free, and two it was the most streamlined of classic operating systems. I really have a boner for Windows 2000 and I just want to know if it's even moderately viable to use in this day and age.

>Why would 2000 be?
It's less optimized for speed. The boot screen for example always takes a certain time even when it's not doing anything. And the classic logon process also has bullshit like doing nothing while the logon or logoff sound are playing (this also applies to XP but I think not to the welcome page logon)

If you just want the classic Win2k icons, there is also a pretty good tool to make XP look like that. It basically removes the XP icons from the resources and you're left with the fallback classic ones.
>>
>>107705709
Just use Linux or BSD.

Win2k does not support most modern hardware.
>>
>>107705709
Windows 2000 won't have a modern web browser, that makes most of these tasks unnecessarily painful.

If you want a retro experience but also be able to do stuff, I would recommend Debian with XFCE.
>>
>>107713170
Ok, so i can take longer to boot. Would anything make it more responsive?
>>
>>107713233
XFCE is still too modern, Trinity is closer to the Windows 2000 experience, but even then its more of an XP or Vista feel.

So far, the options I have are Protonmail and Tutanota, with 1GB of space for free. For more space the way to go seems to be Infomaniak (20GB), but I don't really like their public declarations regarding privacy.

AMDSISTERS HOW WILL WE EVER RECOVER?

>>107712238
They don't even need collusion to form a cartel. All they need to do (which is literally what they already do) is not seriously undercut their competitor and both make bank.
AMD has no interest in heavily undercutting Nvidia because they already sell all their stock, they wouldn't be able to meet demand if the prices were that much lower, and all they would do is force Nvidia to lower their prices (which they can easily do). This would only benefit the consumer, but wouldn't benefit either company.
So why would they do it?
AMD keeps selling ever so slightly lower than Nvidia, sells an insignificant amount of GPUs compared to Nvidia, both make as much bank as they can. That's it.

This is how business works everywhere btw. You don't need backroom deals to have collusion and price fixing.

Let's talk about Israeli tech and try to keep antisemitism to a minimum. These are techies, like you and I, who are interested in using techology in clever ways. Their faith/ethnicity is irrelevant.

For instance, specifically, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev attracted my attention a while back as a place where they develop interesting ways to use tech for intelligence gathering purposes. See below:

Gathering data from airgapped PCs:
https://archive.ph/mZetu
https://archive.ph/7CuvE

Man in the middle device with an external battery that intercepts traffic from an ethernet network:

Research papers on this guy's profile in particular are very interesting:

He's probably mossad or works closely with them, but he freely shares his findings nevertheless.

...or you could use commands on files with fzf. Blazing fast. Instead of typing everything out, filter the list and press tab on the things, then the keybind that does the stuff you want to the things. It's less keystrokes than typing out 10 filepaths and faster to use than any fm. I've been trying to get an llm to spit out a wrapper script for xclip that allows me to copy and paste whatever I want, but xclip apparently has some problems that I'm not going to be able to get around until someone makes a better clipboard tool for x11. So, the ability to copy and paste images is my only remaining use case for a fm of any kind. Instead of typing out the filepath as an argument, I just press ctrl-f, opening fzf with all the files in the directory. I can still just type the path like I would otherwise, but now I have the opportunity to easily do file management tasks 'on the way' to do something else.
>>
>>107693610
>>107712905
>>107713002

I will also note that with autocd enabled, when you open the fzf-file-widget (my ctrl-f), you can just cd to the directories in the list by pressing enter.
>>
>>107713021
**assumine there's nothing else on the command line and you aren't trying to complete an argument or something.
>>
cd, ls, mv ,cp ,rm
>>
>>107713095
I would also like to point out that fzf has a preview window that can be configured to show file metadata. Why type out so many commands when you can simply browse a list with up and down to get a clearer idea of what you are looking at? I understand everyone's despisal for file mangers, but there's nothing more efficient than fuzzy finding a string in a searchable list, where you already know the fewest chars to match the things you need most often.

If you use the GNU Image Manipulation Program, there is something wrong with you mentally.

It is the only thing preventing me from using a Linux-based OS on a permanent basis. I need Photoshop to work and WINE is buggy as shit. The GIMP is a shit alternative.

Prove me wrong. Why would anyone deliberately use this garbage?
54 replies and 18 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>107705654
I think the reason for that is that Photopea is a Photoshop clone that tries to replicate its features and design. GIMP was never meant to be a Photoshop clone or even a true alternative. It's an image editor designed by programmers, and it shows. The UI is awful, some basic features were added in GIMP 3.0 that Photoshop has had for decades, and many are still missing. The type tool is still awful, and the lack of vector layers means that if you create a shape and later decide to make it bigger or change the stroke width or color, you need to recreate it.

If you only use Photoshop for basic designs, you could replace it with GIMP, but everything is more convoluted.

I have an AI plugin that makes vector shapes. I manually modified it so it does an outline on a checkbox

https://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=21708

I'm so hesitant to say I have AI plugins because then normies will assume I'm nothing but a vibe coder when that isn't true at all. Most of my GIMP plugins were made long before I touched AI. The first AI plugins came in April 2025. The first time I studied GEGL was June 2021
>>

Even without my plugins you can change the color and stroke wdith.

For example gegl:color-overlay can change the color and gegl:styles (that I made) can adjust the outline.
