Should FOSS be on social media? Is KDE e.v. employee Paul Brown right about X being a nazi platform?

>>107706604
You go along on the line of extremism, but I get your point of view.

On one hand, FOSS needs to have a public facing, but on the other hand, that facing can be seen as a bigger harm to the community because of the character of twitter. This is all without taking into account the establishment of martial law on X.

I could argue that one could set up bot accounts for just posting important events on social media, but have a redirect link back to the original website. It would be a solution that takes advantage of the oen medium to spread FOSS, but be so impersonal and occasional that it doesn't spark controversy.

One could remark from this that taming social media is impossible, and that global public forums of this kind shouldn't exist on regards of their futility to serve society. I think social media should return to primitive conditions wherein people rely on websites, blogs, forums. Ideally in such a way that everybody can be able to host their own website and only bother to use social media in specialised areas like how 4chan is split into boards. I agree with your disdain for unrestricted global-reaching comment sections that social media seem like

>>
>>107706125
Windows' file system is bad at handling lots of tiny files, which emacs relies upon heavily. In earlier Windows versions you could tweak the registry setting NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation for a performance boost (at the price of backwards compatibility), I do not know if this is still relevant in Win11.

Do copyright laws need to adapt to digital media?

The ideal use of copyright is so someone who publishes something can profit from it as long as they hold the copyright and once they're no longer around or surrender their authority over it then anyone can use it without seeking permission or license.

But when it comes to software there is real value in being able to maintain software for use later with the evolution of technology, so someone or a company holding copyright over data can actually bring value long after the original publication since their ability to maintain it may rely on their ability to own it and profit from it.

Obviously this applies more than anything to video games since the code that the game runs on and the assets it rely on can be separated (people can reverse engineer the code and create a clean-room replication that behaves the same as the original game but that will never entitle them to also distribute their reengineered code with the necessary assets needed to recreate the entire game) but it can be applied across the entire spectrum of software in some fashion, due to things like being able to port stuff to different or newer platforms.

Theme: [Accepting suggestions]

>Song submission rules/guidelines
Upload the file somewhere, preferably in a lossless format, and post the link here. If you want to update your track, make a new post.
Include the song title in the post, and make it clear that your song is a submission for the album.
Optionally you may include cover art for your track, but please confirm that the image in your post is the cover art or it won't be included. You may not use your real artist name.
Songs that contain anything against YouTube's policies won't be uploaded on YT, but will still be added to the album.
By default, tracks will be normalised to -14 LUFS (integrated loudness) in the release. You may specify a lower loudness for your track.
Use of AI is banned. This includes AI generated stems, samples, and effects. "AI" includes all neural network-based models and not hard-coded automation/procedural generation. You are allowed to ask an LLM about music-related questions, but asking it to give you musical ideas (eg. generating a chord progression) is already a no-no.

>but guess what, this becomes much easier to do when you already know an instrument too.
Do you really need more than just playing the melody on a midi keyboard?
>>
>>107705807
Yes, not because playing a melody using a single hand on piano is technically demanding (it is not), but because the experience acquired by playing actual pieces trains your ear and lets you intuitively pick up on the ways music is composed. In other words you pick up the so called theory intuitively rather than academically. For example, you realize that between C major and G major there is only one note that is different (C major uses F and G major uses F#). If you are building a melody in C major, and at some point instead of playing an F you play an F#, this translates into tension, surprise and so on (use your own ear to judge). Since you switched to the scale that is only one note apart, the transition is seamless compared to moving towards a different scale. Obviously, depending on what you are composing and trying to accomplish, maybe you actually want the dissonance, and you choose to avoid the F#. By playing several pieces, you notice the patterns in the music, and your ear picks up naturally on these patterns. Also, when I say that you should play an instrument, I don't mean at all that you should aim to become a virtuoso. Even a lower intermediate level will do wonders for what you can think of in musical terms, which is perhaps around 800 to 1000 hours for piano. I'm certain some people here are above average in musical aptitude and general intellect and creativity, even if they don't realize it yet, and it'd be a shame if they are not achieving their full potential by not picking up an instrument.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
