What are the main differences between zsh and bash? I am planning to switch to zsh but the majority of articles I read on the internet say that zsh is just for the customization and not as powerful as bash that has programming functions such as looping and and conditional constructs, tilde and brace expansions, and the use of aliases. Bash has also powerful invocation tools and a restricted shell mode, having a particular POSIX mode.

Has anyone had any problems with Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora systems when installing software from a third party repo? For example, when using an official .deb package to install VScode, or using nvm to install nodejs, were you able to cleanly upgrade from one version of Debian/Ubuntu to the next? I'd like to install vscodium/code and nodejs, but I'm unsure of how to do this in a way that "won't break Debian," a philosophy that Debian users keep referring to.
Is this something to worry about when installing such software, or am I overthinking this?

Wavemon or LinSSID. You can also do tricks with the built-in command line of network manager like this (in a terminal window):
while true; do nmcli -f "CHAN,BARS,SIGNAL,SSID" d wifi list ifname wlp4s0 | sort -n; sleep 1; done
Replace "wlp4s0" with the name of your own wireless device. You can find the name with "ifconfig"

This applies to Lubuntu, not sure how similar the process is on other distros. This is just looking at my old notes from when I remapped stuff some time ago.

Various keyboard layout files are available in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols
I believe you can either modify an existing one or create your own new one (I'm not sure how to check which one you are currently using, but that should be easy enough to figure out with a web search), but if creating a new file you'll also need to add it to the list in /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev.lst under ! layout
When I did it I created my own new one by just copy/pasting from the basic US qwerty layout into a new file and modifying what I wanted modified, then saving it.
Key name assignments are in /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev

To apply keyboard changes for keyboard file named xx (with xx just being an example. you can call it whatever you want), enter in the terminal: setxkbmap -layout "xx"
Restart session or remove .xkm files from /var/lib/xkb to apply changes

If keyboard changes reset on logout, you can make an executable file and set it to autorun on login. At least in Lubuntu, you'll just have to put the file in ~/.config/autostart
The executable file (again using the "xx" example) would contain the following:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Switch To Custom Keyboard
Exec=setxkbmap -layout "xx"
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=System;

Sorry if this is unclear/convoluted, I am just taking this from notes I wrote for myself a long time ago of the process that worked for me when I was remapping a few keys, not sure how similar the process will be for you. If this isnt clear enough then I guess look up a guide from someone who knows what they're talking about (unlike me)

First let's check if you're using the proprietary drivers. Run this command:
lsmod | grep nv

On the left side of the column you should see a bunch of Nvidia modules with names like "nvidia drm, nvidia-modeset, nvidia" if these exist you're using the good drivers.

if they don't exist try lsmod | grep nouv, if you get a hit with that, this means you're using the open-source drivers named nouveau. These are dogshit. If niether outputs any modules then do lspci -nnk | grep -i vga to see what graphics you have on your system. It might be the case that you're in a hybrid mode and are using your CPU's integrated graphics such as intel UHD graphics, in which case you'll need to use NVIDIA prime which takes a bit of know how since cinnamon doesn't have an in-built gpu switcher like gnome's switcheroo.

PRIME is only neccessary in the case that you have integrated graphics enabled in your BIOS. This is usually OFF for desktops, but turned on by default for Laptops -- are you on a gaming laptop?

For my gaming laptop, I have debian installed with gnome. My advice to you would be to install the gnome desktop environment. I don't know how that's done on the mint/ubuntu repo. Check google. It's fairly simple to do and you just logout and run games by clicking "run with discrete graphics card"

Now if above isn't the case and you're running wth a single gpu, then could it be you have the wrong cable connected to your monitor? Are you sure the cable that connects directly to your GPU is connected to your monitor, and that the cable is not connected to your mobo instead? This may lead to lower FPS(assuming the issue is lowFPS/bad performance -- and not that games don't even start.)

Can someone review my attempt at a minimal Debian KDE install? I'm trying to install Debian KDE on a desktop without the bloat but still have core features.

is it? to be honest I'm only installing it because i need a DE that runs SDDM by default. My other option is LXQt, do you have any experience with this DE?
>>
>>100158663
Pipewire with its Pulseaudio/ALSA/JACK emulators and Wireplumber should be all you need for sound. The plasma-nm package is so you have a native GUI for networkmanager which you should also download, which'll deal with your internet connections.
Also when it comes to KDE "being bad" it's just that for certain people it seems to be kinda janky sometimes, but honestly it's the most feature rich Linux DE out there currently, so just try it yourself.
>>
>>100158689
>Pipewire with its Pulseaudio/ALSA/JACK emulators and Wireplumber should be all you need for sound.
oh your right I almost took the wrong package. I need pipewire-audio which has everything you listed.

yea i've been on linux for almost 2 years and never used another DE except gnome, so i wanted to try something new. Also SDDM is the only display manager that lets me detach and reattach my nvidia card without giving me weird black screens. gdm makes me use kernel modesetting which messes up my hook scripts so right now I'm using sddm with gnome but there are so many weird quirks and work around with this setup. and I'm quite frankly tired of all the weird shit with wayland so going for native x11 and sddm will hopefully be much smoother experience.

Can someone tell me why Arch won't boot after I install it?

After pacstrap I do mkinitcpio, install x86_64-efi grub as normal, put my luksUUID cryptdevice in grub, put my home UUID in crypttab, set 400 permissions for the keyfile, reboot.

Just shows my SSD name and refreshes it every time I click boot. Showing ufibootmgr lists the 13th entry as grub, partition 1, etc. So I know it's installed properly.

I've got
+1GiB ef00 /boot
+30GiB 0083 /
+400GiB 0083 /home

Do I have to export BOOTLOADER=grub before installing grub? It said no errors, though

I hope I don't have to mess around creating an /efi partition instead of /boot because I've never got that shit to work.

I am connecting from my laptop over to my desktop both on wifi, but I am pretty fucking sure that wifi is not the problem since I am able to 'stream' 1080p 60fps on the same connection via sshfs, and vnc is just the fucking cursor moving on the screen and windows floating around, any alternatives on linux ?

I'm thinking things like not having drag and drop between two windows in entirely different directories (each navigated to directory by directory because the user doesn't have the path memorized), scrolling through a filelist for bulk selection rather than flicking the mouse between items or dragging a selection box over several at once, being in an image/video directory and only getting one thumbnail at a time.

All dual-pane FMs are keyboard-first. Try Double Commander, for example.
Dolphin is more awkward in regards to keyboard, but also mostly keyboard-driven.

Anyone here that uses custom Fedora Atomic Images? I'm interesed, but also mentally challenged, this topic is a bit confusing. After doing my own surface research, it seems like there're two straightfoward templates to create your own images
https://github.com/ublue-os/image-template
https://github.com/blue-build/template
I find annoying having to relayer RPMFusion shit so it sounds convenient, ut i feel like i'm biting more than what a newfag can eat with this topic. So, i have a few question: going down this route means is up to me to update the script, build and rebase my own custom image every time i want to install an update? Do i really need to do this using Github actions or can i download and build the images myself? What are the possible base images i can choose from in the build process? Can i i.e. switch from Silverblue to Kionite?

My first look tells me that KDE has more features, so I guess that MATE is the lightweight of these 2?

I see that they have different application suits, like every DE and different features.

Is it worth trying to circumvent the cancer that is Google's Youtube frontend?

I wouldn't mind making a userscript to send links to Invidious but it looks like instances are being hit hard by Google blackballing (something like half of videos on an instance won't load - whatever detection is involved, it targets by IP so admins are having to cycle their IPv6) and it's apparently even affecting private instances despite it having been thought to mostly affect bigger public ones.

What about yt-dl? I see it can be piped to a media player but is that not just an unseekable stream? I don't mind, even kinda prefer, fully downloading content from creators that I know I want to watch in full but there's still a lot of usage where that just sucks.

>drag and drop between two windows in entirely different directories
not needed. lf (the best tui file manager) uses a server to communicate between windows. you can copy in one window and paste into the other with keybinds.
>scrolling through a filelist for bulk selection rather than flicking the mouse between items
you don't have to scroll one by one when page up/down exists and is faster than scrolling because you can just hold the key down and have it repeat. also there are tui file managers that have mouse support, again lf being one of them.
>or dragging a selection box over several at once
with tui file managers you can select the first and last file, then have a key bind to select everything in between.
>being in an image/video directory and only getting one thumbnail at a time.
yea this one is an understandable concern. although with a combination of window swallowing and nsxiv's thumbnail mode you can emulate a traditional file explorers thumbnail view reasonably well.

I have a ThinkPad X240 with Nobara and ive noticed its really slow when it comes to certain things, slower than Windows. for example, Steam library view is extremely slow, scrolling through the games is extremely laggy, i have tested enabling/disabling GPU Acceleration, switching from Wayland to X11 and its still slow, opening youtube lags the entire computer and watching videos is very slow, i installed the extension that converts youtube to h264 and it improved it a little bit but overall its a much slower experience

KDE is the most fully featured DE there is.
MATE is a fork of old GNOME for nostalgic nerds.
XFCE is a lightweight desktop.
Cinnamon is poor man's KDE but it does the job.
GNOME is the flagship Linux desktop and it fucking blows ass. WIthout extensions it's unusable to all but the biggest turbo autists and many distros like Ubuntu and Pop_OS ship it with extensions to address its design failures.

https://github.com/tmux/tmux

Ctrl + B then C for a new tab
Ctrl + B then number to switch to tab with that number
Ctrl + B then % to split horizontally, " for vertically
Ctrl + B then D to detatch from tmux session
tmux a in terminal to reattach
Personally I run
tmux a || tmux
so it tries to attach and if it fails it just opens fresh session

Aside from floating this will do what you want (have tabbed terminal) but will work in any terminal, in any WM/DE and even over ssh. tmux sessions also last through terminal/DE crash and user logging out and can be used in multiple terminals at once, including over ssh. You can enable mouse support in config which I recommend.

How the fuck do I nuke this retarded wayland.log file from ever appearing on my system again? Many months ago I stupidly enabled this log file to write to "/home/username/.local/share/sddm/wayland-session.log" in a config file but the problem is it writes infinitely like a tard and eventually takes up all my remaining /home space, even if I delete it, which forces me to restart. It's been so long in my command history I don't know where I set this stupid thing to log and I'm having trouble finding it. I'm sick of having to eventually restart over this dumb log file eating up all my space, someone please help.

Yeah you don't need a GUI for pipewire, I can play audio in TTY on my PC or in Termux on my phone for example. Install mpv and yt-dlp, then use this script and you can play anyYouTube audio:
#!/bin/bash
mpv --no-video "ytdl://ytsearch:$*"

Put it in some folder in your home dir and add that folder to your PATH to have it work as a command accessible from anywhere at any time.

DEs usually come with a lot of utilities and most of the time you have to uninstall one to install another, tho the configurations should be saved hopefully. I personally haven't gotten much into configuring DEs as I prefer WMs but if you want to DE hop I recommend something like Arch which comes with no DE by default since it'll be way easier to get support online for configuring them. On my phone at least I used Termux with termux-x11 and got xfce4 to run within an app on my phone very easily with a single command and it works flawlessly, but as I said not sure how complicated it gets when you want to switch from one larger DE to another

im trying to make a local testing setup where i need to check for various network conditions, and frankly the tools on windows and mac are rather shit, and i also need to check mobile stuff, so that wont fly
what i can up with is a debian server on a small machine or laptop, configured so it would connect to my wifi, and split/control the connections/traffic for the other stuff
its been a hot 10 years since i last had to configure a debian server with firewall, routing and all that fancy stuff, and I1ve heard nowadays people just use tc or pfsense
What would be the best way to go about this, and what would be needed for it/how to do it?
main point would be to able to test various conditions when i only have access to wifi, and need it small as i would be on the move too along with home testing
